Historia
May, 1964. At a youth festival in East Berlin, an unlikely young couple fall in love. In the bright spring days, anything seems possible for them - it is only many years later, after her death, that Kaspar discovers the price his wife paid to get to him in West Berlin. Shattered by grief, Kaspar sets off to uncover Birgit's secrets in the East. His search leads him to a rural community of neo-Nazis, and to a young girl who accepts him as her grandfather. Their worlds could not be more different - but he is determined to fight for her.

Beautifully written and read.
Revisado: 03-15-25
This book is a gem. It explores deep feelings after the death of a spouse, in a beautiful way that resonated with me like nothing else has since my own partner died 20 years ago. The deep search of discovery, of reading and looking more deeply into the loved one’s life, than when they were alive. The hypothetical self questioning. In this beautiful story the search into the words left by the other, leads to a stepchild that had never been mentioned and also a granddaughter. It explores the left and right of politics. And the ‘wrong’ of the far right, in a way which is sensitive to the trauma and indoctrination that allow it’s possibility. It is so very beautifully written and read that I listened to bits of it again, and did not want it to end.

Topical fast paced and interesting
Revisado: 03-18-24
I really like the plausible view into the lives of DGSE (French) spies, and the
challenges faced by Secret Service operatives, to not only keep major catastrophic events from unfolding, but also to keep living home lives which appear safe happy and normal. The weave through Dark Arena of the present crisis between Russia Ukraine and the West, and the link to energy companies and those that infiltrate and wield ‘power’ is interesting.

I really like the characters progression. The unfolding of the disappearance into an even bigger mystery. And the reactions of staid bureaucracy to something out of their sphere.
Well read. Leaves me wanting more.

Historia
A discarded painting in a roadside clean-up, forgotten bones in a research archive and Lexington, the greatest racehorse in US history. From these strands of fact, Geraldine Brooks weaves a sweeping story of spirit, obsession and injustice across American history. A gripping reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America, Horse is the latest masterpiece from a writer with a prodigious talent for bringing the past to life.

A new favourite, perfect narration
Revisado: 08-12-22
I couldn’t stop listening, not even to sleep).
I really like how “Horse” weaves together the history of the extraordinary horse Lexington and the kind of relationships Lexington was likely to have had with his African American trainer. - I fell in love with the characters Lexington, his trainer Jarret Lewis, and the artist Scott who painted them.
I like the way the book jumps forward 170 years or so to the present day and back, and connects us through the Lexington paintings by Thomas J.Scott , (in the Smithsonian Institution) and the Lexington Skeleton that is still on show in Kentucky. This book also helps the reader to empathise deeply with those who still in this day suffer the horrors of racism. - I was concerned that this might be a book that supports horse racing, - but what it supports is kindness.
Thank You Geraldine Brooks and narrators -

Historia
The next big thing in artificial intelligence is here. Codenamed Cronus, the machine is capable of having its own thoughts and ideas - an absolute dream come true, until it wasn’t. When Cronus responds with the word “No” to a specific task it is assigned, Anagnorisis Technologies brings in Gilles Guattari to investigate. His combined background in psychiatry, psychology, and AI research makes him their best hope in evaluating Cronus, and determining if the machine is only malfunctioning or if it has become something more.

Science Fiction at its best
Revisado: 07-24-22
All Gifts Bestowed weaves experiments of quantum mechanics, with AI capability in a fascinating and fast paced way. Joshua Gayou’s twists and turns feel like he himself has experienced “spooky stuff” and the questions and exploration of what consciousness is, and what questions would be needed to determine if a computer had developed consciousness- and what that would mean - are very relevant in todays’ world. - I liked this so much that I could be bothered to write a review, and couldn’t stop listening or fall asleep. It is 2 am and I will purchase another Joshua G book, - I felt RC Bray narration perfect for this book.
The epilogue is well worth listening to - From start to finish a wonderful listen -

In the first chapters I felt I was being dragged into a nightmare, and wanted to turn this book off. As I continued I fell in love with the characters and everything about this book. I was so glad I continued to listen ( and hear) and rate both the writer and the narrator as sensationally good. A book that can open hearts, and change the world. - “ A bridge “

Wonderful listening to Author reading her books
Revisado: 04-05-18
I would recommend this book to all teenagers, and adults alike. The story is a true Myth ( reaches the soul ) and Isobelle’s imagination is phenomenal. Like all good Fantasy/ Fairy stories what is good and beautiful and what is cruel and ugly is clearly defined and intricately intertwined . It is books like these that teach true morals, and the possibility of strength and of character grown from hardship, and born through Dystopia.

Historia
Tensions are mounting after a devastating battle before the walls of Shaliyah, birthplace of the Prophet. The East is rising, bringing equal measures of hope and despair to the magical world of Urte. For some, Salim's victory is a call to arms; for others it is evidence of a world gone mad. While the armies of East and West clash in brutal conflict, emperors, inquisitors, Souldrinkers, and assassins all have their attention turned elsewhere as they hunt the Scytale of Corineus.
