Historia
Thomas Mann's last great novel, first published in 1947 and now newly rendered into English by acclaimed translator John E. Woods, is a modern reworking of the Faust legend, in which Germany sells its soul to the Devil. Mann's protagonist, the composer Adrian Leverkühn, is the flower of German culture, a brilliant, isolated, overreaching figure, his radical new music a breakneck game played by art at the very edge of impossibility. In return for twenty-four years of unparalleled musical accomplishment, he bargains away his soul—and the ability to love his fellow man.

At long last! Absolutely essential
Revisado: 12-12-24
Finally we have a first-rate audiobook of Mann's late-period masterpiece. Rintoul provides a fine reading and John E. Woods' translation is excellent. For many years, we have not had this essential title available on audio — Ukemi's release is cause for celebration. Don't miss out on this one!

Historia
After the collapse of her marriage to an illustrious German prince, Baroness Eugenia Münster arrives in America with her brother, in search of wealthy New England relatives. The duo have an immediate impact on their American cousins, the Wentworths. The Baroness captures the eye of young Clifford Wentworth, and his girlfriend's older brother Robert; meanwhile, Felix falls for his American cousin Gertrude. The Wentworths are overawed by their European cousins and their frivolous lifestyle. What unfolds is a delightful comedy of manners.

Please more Adam Sims reading Henry James!
Revisado: 07-23-24
Adam Sims is my favorite narrator for the twisty Henry James, and this recording of The Europeans is no exception. He brings a dryness and clarity to the relentless obscurantism of the great American novelist that is unsurpassed. The Europeans is not one of James' greatest works, but it's neat and delicate with distinct types and an amusing story. I would be very grateful if Naxos kept recording more of the master's novels as read by Sims, in particular The Princess Casamassima, The Reverberator, or The Awkward Age.

Historia
In this biting comedy of errors, the hapless Arnolphe is undone by his own double dealing and double standards. The School for Wives was first performed at the Palais Royal theatre on December 26, 1662, and is considered by many to be Moliere's masterpiece. Richard Wilbur's subtle verse translation illuminates the great master of comedy at his wittiest.

Butchered
Revisado: 05-13-22
This is not Richard Wilbur's translation of "The School for Wives". Rather, it is as if some genius decided to stick the play in a blender. Not only is it abridged, but it is out of order and completely useless as a representation of Moliere's great comedy. Performances are okay, but know if you listen to this you're not really reading the play.

Historia
This acclaimed new translation of Dostoyevsky's 'psychological record of a crime' gives his dark masterpiece of murder and pursuit a renewed vitality, expressing its jagged, staccato urgency and fevered atmosphere as never before. Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders alone through the slums of St. Petersburg, deliriously imagining himself above society's laws. But when he commits a random murder, only suffering ensues.

Best translation on audible – mediocre narrator
Revisado: 04-29-20
As far as I can tell, every other unabridged English translation on audible is the inferior one by Constance Garnett. Now, I don't have the same anti-Garnett bias that others do, and I can admit that her translations of Chekhov and Tolstoy are quite good, but Dostoevsky is too chatty for Garnett's British formality.
That's why this audio book release is worth celebrating! Oliver Ready's translation is appropriately tough and unpretentious, while still maintaining the intellectual vigor of the novel. Thus, I'd say if you're looking for a Crime and Punishment audiobook, go with this one.
Unfortunately, Don Warrington's narration is hit-or-miss, though he gets better as the book goes along. My guess is that Mr. Warrington is a talented actor who is new to audio-book narration, as his voice conveys tone and is suitably emotional, but he doesn't have enough vocal variety to distinguish from the characters and his tone is too flat for such a gritty work as Crime and Punishment. Overall, it's a shame that Penguin didn't go with a better narrator, but this is still worth listening to if you'd like to read such an important novel in a good translation.
