Historia
It might be in the water. Or the air. Or the food. No one knows. One thing is clear: something is happening to the men of Crystal Canyon. Little by little, they’re losing their free will. Whenever one of these hapless males hears a woman’s command, he can’t help himself. He must obey. Until now, Crystal Canyon has been a pretty cool place for men. The local college trains business and engineering majors. The boys aren’t punished for crazy parties or harassing the girls. Then there are the miners and analysts who work for Talbot Industries. Pretty much everything about Crystal Canyon...

Disturbing
Revisado: 10-22-24
The plot could have been really interesting but the author focused way too much on the worst parts of societies male dominated hierarchy without offering any subtlety. At no point does the author imagine there are men and women who desire equity and balance between the two sexes. When a character does look at the morality it is fleeting. There are so many plot holes for a book of this length and the story arc lacks any depth. What happens to the woman who helps the men? The slave narrative is gross, mostly because it lacks any real world experience or understanding of the power dynamics between a slave master relationship. Wars have been fought over slavery and many chose death over servitude but the author’s fantasy doesn’t deal with any issues beyond the surface. Worst of all the sex description are boring, crass, and mostly focus on rape fantasy.

Where’s the Black Sheep
Revisado: 12-06-23
Thoughtful and reverent all the while being entertaining and funny. Mac’s unique journey in wine is told in a narrative that anyone who likes wine will enjoy. Great read for all ages over 21, I guess but will bring back fond memories for those who cut their teeth in wine in the late 90s and early two thousands. Mac’s not afraid to sling a little mud and tell the stories behind the scenes.

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

WTF Bonus Story!
Revisado: 08-27-23
I enjoyed the variety of stories and the narrators were classic for hard boiled mystery or cozy murder mystery. Nothing innovative or unusual from the collection but I enjoyed it nonetheless. That is until the last bonus story which featured a setting called N word-head with a hard N and G. Couldn’t get through the story as each time the place was referenced threw me away from the story. What the hell?

Historia
Dexter meets Secretary in Michael J. Seidlinger's provocative, disturbing literary thriller that reinvents the serial killer genre, exploring the psychology of desire. Claire studies forensic science, Victor is the gentleman killer. Subverting expectations, Clair seduces Victor and keeps him in her apartment as her pet, her darkest secret. Beautifully written and provocative to listen to, Seidlinger delves into Claire's motivations and impetus to present a compelling psychosexual portrait of a woman obsessed with performance, power, sex, and gore.

Original Take on Genre
Revisado: 06-10-23
Inspired by the originality and the weaving of multiple story lines but the extended use of mystery was distracting and could have been refined by the author a bit more.

Historia
In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolling the police, and promised to prevent police brutality. Unlike the Civil Rights Movement that called for full citizenship rights for blacks within the US, the Black Panther Party rejected the legitimacy of the US government and positioned itself as part of a global struggle against American imperialism.

Revisado: 05-19-23
This is one of the best historical accounts of the Black Panther Party that seeks to analyze the movement from a neutral perspective. Anyone who is a fan of historical literature will appreciate the work that went into this book. It unveils the good, the bad, and the ugly around the movement and it’s protractors.

Historia
Following echoes between generations which defy normal time and space, a multilayered narrative celebrates the Rougeaux family triumphs while exposing the injustices of their trials. It begins with Iya, born in Africa in the 1700s, and brought to the Caribbean island of Martinique as a slave, and her two children, Adunbi and Abeje, who grow up on a sugar estate. The siblings endure because of the kindness of fellow bondsmen and their uncommon abilities.

Nicely Done
Revisado: 01-06-23
If you’ve never read any Afro-Utopian fiction then you will find this a great place to start. The author has a unique perspective with characters mainly focused in the Baltimore, MD Black community. Reminiscent of Black Panther Party ideologies but with an updated approach relevant to today. At times some readers will wish the author was more militant in her approach and others will be horrified by the premise, to me, means the author has done an admirable job in presenting her point of view. The only bad part is this book is the beginning of a series and the ending is left wide open for future works, instead of a conclusion with an open ended twist.
