Home is Where the Cliches Are
Revisado: 07-16-24
Think of a middling true crime podcast combined with the most worn out self-help mantras you’ve ever heard and you have this book.
At the end, when the author delivers a “life message” through one of her characters, I literally laughed out loud.

Historia
Seasoned music writer Dan Ozzi chronicles this embattled era in punk. Focusing on eleven prominent bands who made the jump from indie to major, Sellout charts the twists and turns of the last “gold rush” of the music industry, where some groups “sold out” and rose to surprise super stardom, while others buckled under mounting pressures. Sellout is both a gripping history of the music industry’s evolution, and a punk rock lover’s guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era.

A great snapshot of an exciting time
Revisado: 11-04-21
Even if you only like a handful of the bands covered, the details of each story are really interesting. If you grew up in the timeframe covered, it’s a nice stroll down memory lane. You’re likely to have a lot of “Oh yeah, I remember hearing that song/band” moments while listening. My only suggestion is that the narrator just pronounce Fat Wreck Chords as “Fat Records”. The way he literally says “Wreck Chords” during the Rise Against chapter drove me nuts. But that’s being nit-picky. Overall, a wonderful book.

Historia
Acclaimed historian Rick Perlstein chronicles the rise of the conservative movement in the liberal 1960s. At the heart of the story is Barry Goldwater, the renegade Republican from Arizona who loathed federal government, despised liberals, and mocked "peaceful coexistence" with the USSR. Perlstein's narrative shines a light on a whole world of conservatives and their antagonists, including William F. Buckley, Nelson Rockefeller, and Bill Moyers. Vividly written, Before the Storm is an essential book about the 1960s.

Great author. Okay narrator.
Revisado: 04-30-21
Rick Perlstein is a great writer. The narrator for this book is only great if you love sub-par impressions of politicians. When he just reads, it’s fine. When he impersonates JFK or LBJ or MLK or Nixon, it’s cringe-inducing.

Terrible
Revisado: 10-25-20
The information is third or fourth hand and apocryphal at best. It’s like the author just listened to the Something to Wrestle podcast and transcribed it. In fact, several of the stories in the book had to have been directly derived from that podcast, that’s the only way the author could come up with certain information. I hope Conrad Thompson and Bruce Prichard get a cut of the profits. The tone is typical internet wrestling fan: snarky, holier-than-thou and pompous. Terrible.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

So. Much. Yelling.
Revisado: 03-31-17
I have to believe Steven Weber ruined his vocal chords while shouting his way through 45 hours of IT. What’s great is that he yells in places when the dialogue doesn’t even call for it (BONUS!).

Great Principles, Grating to Listen To
Revisado: 07-19-12
What did you like best about The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People? What did you like least?
Great principles for life, but it's too hard to get past this poor recording. You hear every lip smack and small mouth noise coming out of his mouth and it's grating and irritating to say the least. It completely takes away from the material being shared. I've heard this is the first audiobook to sell 1 million copies and I honestly have no idea how so many people can tolerate the DISGUSTING mouth noises.
Would you recommend The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to your friends? Why or why not?
No.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Disgusting and distracting mouth noises. Did they not have water for him in the studio? Did no one go back and edit the audio?
