it is rare to encounter a book that's so carefully and clearly lays out the fundamentals of a field such as this one. with terrific worked examples, and smart, cogently argued chapters, you will come away from reading negotiation genius with a much firmer appreciation of how to approach negotiations both in business and in life. I found myself looking back at a recent house purchase and seeing several points at which I could have applied the advice in this book.

Historia
Condensed from more than three million words, these conversations involve housewives and cabinet ministers, professors and assembly-line workers, on the subject of how traditional psychology can illuminate current human, social, and spiritual problems. More than 100 tales and extracts from Sufi lore, ranging from the eighth century (Hasan of Basra) to the modern Afghan poet Khalilullah Khalili, are woven into Shah’s narratives of how and why the Sufis learn what they learn and how spiritual understanding develops and deteriorates in all societies.

bracing and illuminating
Revisado: 09-29-21
this listen was my fourth encounter with learning how to learn, and I'm always surprised to find so much depth and richness--it seems as if I'm opening the book for the first time. structured differently from many of shah's other books, learning how to learn is a series of questions and answers, each of which provides a jumping off point for Shah to touch on matters of spirituality, psychology, learning, and human behavior. however, the overall theme is the same as all of his books, the elucidation of the course of the Seeker after Truth. if you know Shah's work, then here he is at his best. if you do not, this book will serve as well as any as a engaging introduction to his way of thought.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

fun little novella
Revisado: 08-21-21
who's after the third friend recommended the murderbot series to me that I finally picked this up. I'm very glad I did, light and lively with plenty of action from the first few seconds, the murderbot diaries are a fun light-hearted romp. despite the ominous name of the main character, there isn't a whole lot of violence in meds story. The main characters to main desires are to help his little band of scientists oh, and to get back to watching soap operas. :-) the scientists themselves are great gang, a survey mission stuck on a remote Planet, not the usual swashbuckling space heroes that you come to expect in a Sci-Fi novel this action-packed. can't wait to read the rest of the series :-)

I've read caravan of dreams maybe 5 times over the course of 20 years, and I hope to return to it again and again. This trove of tales, aphorisms, accounts, and sayings tantalizes and challenges, echoing in the mind long after you've turned the last page. For anyone interested in the Sufi Way, this book cannot be missed.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

timely, imaginative and well researched
Revisado: 01-09-21
as usual, it's hard to imagine another author with the historical sweep of Kim Stanley Robinson. taking place over the course of the 40 years of the near future the book opens with a gut wrenching account of a man-made natural disaster. it's never been easier to picture the near future impact of climate change. the book proceeds to follow Mary Murphy-- the leader of the international ministry for the future as she and her stallwart co-workers throw every ounce of imagination and drive they can at the problem of bending humanity's trajectory away from disaster. the book can get dry at times, and despite the occasional harrowing incidents, I don't recommend reading this for the plot. however as a deeply imaginative look into what is coming for us, and what sorts of solutions we might deploy, as well as a refreshing breath of Hope as humanity makes some progress, I cannot recommend this work highly enough :-)

Authors Womack, Jones, and Roos provided a comprehensive description of the entire lean system. They exhaustively documented its advantages over the mass production model pioneered by General Motors and predicted that lean production would eventually triumph. Indeed, they argued that it would triumph not just in manufacturing but in every value-creating activity from health care to retail to distribution.

only half useful for the modern reader
Revisado: 09-09-19
A fascinating treatise on car manufacture c.1990. Despite many good ideas, the book becomes dated halfway through--devolving into inside baseball on the forecasted fortunes of various firms in the 1990s. Worth skimming through the first half and then skipping ahead to the afterword which corrects some major errors in the first half!

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

One of the finest novels in the English language
Revisado: 04-21-18
Middlemarch, George Eliot's novel of the interlocking lives and romances of four couples during Britain's reform era in the 19th century, does not need my praise. It would be as Superfluous as praising The Genius of Shakespeare.
however, to sum up briefly, Elliott's incisive portrayals of the inner lives of her characters is one of the finest feats in literature. These men and women are so believable, that you will find yourself comparing both yourself and others in your life to the inhabitants of middlemarch. This is a rare novel in which you will not only be entertained, but feel like you are gaining genuine insight into your life and its course just by reading it.

At last, one of the world’s greatest works of science fiction is available - just as author Stanislaw Lem intended it. To mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Solaris, Audible, in cooperation with the Lem Estate, has commissioned a brand-new translation - complete for the first time, and the first ever directly from the original Polish to English. Beautifully narrated by Alessandro Juliani ( Battlestar Galactica), Lem’s provocative novel comes alive for a new generation.

Stunning picture of truly alien contact
Revisado: 12-06-17
The picture that emerges over the novel Solaris is of a life-form so alien that neither the reader nor the characters can fully comprehend whether it is conscious, whether it is intelligent, or whether it is even alive at all. This is a rare feat in a field so often populated by anthropomorphized "aliens" whose greatest difference is pointy ears. Despite this bafflement, the planet Solaris manages to press on the characters' psyches in ways more intimate than any lover. There are few books I would genuinely classify as mind-expanding. this is one.

Historia
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Revisado: 09-29-17
I picked this book up as someone who is struggling with the realities of modern dating. It it was funny and lighthearted and well-researched, but honestly it didn't tell me much that I didn't already know. And it wasn't so amusing that it made up for its lack of informativeness. On average, I think that if you have read a double handful of internet articles on Modern dating you probably know everything that's in this book, minus the part about the Tokyo love
