Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Thought Provoking and Interesting
Revisado: 02-13-25
I like this book the first time through, and even better the second time. I think I knew the author was using non-specific gender terms from the beginning, and this was the first time I’ve read that style of book. I incorrectly mistook the genderless terms as still meaning plural people as in “they” and “them”. Even the robot got into the conversation by saying it was neither masculine, feminine, a them or a they, the robot was an “it”.
The story was very enlightening and a charming adventure with discovery around every corner.
It serves me right for not having looked down this rabbit hole before. I think I’m more aware now of what I’ve been missing.
Thumbs up to author and narrator.

Historia
Our planet is suffering from serious environmental problems: coastal flooding due to severe storms caused in part by atmospheric pollution, diminishing natural resources such as clean water, and so on. But while these problems plague planet Earth, two-thirds of our globe is ocean. The seas can be home to pioneers, seasteaders, who are willing to homestead the Blue Frontier. Oil platforms and cruise ships already inhabit the waters; now it's time to take the next step to full-fledged ocean civilizations.

History has shown this to be a poor prediction
Revisado: 02-13-25
I like the idea of this story, but it has already shown itself to be a bad prediction of the future, and yet they are still collecting money and followers for the cause.
The story is told with so much enthusiasm and promise of a better tomorrow, it makes me optimistic. But the truth is, if it could have happened, it would have by now. It hasn't. This book and its cause require an update.

Historia
Most people think genres are simply categories on Netflix or Amazon that provide a helpful guide to making entertainment choices. Most people are wrong. Genre stories aren’t just a small subset of the films, video games, TV shows, and books that people consume. They are the all-stars of the entertainment world, comprising the vast majority of popular stories worldwide. That’s why businesses—movie studios, production companies, video game studios, and publishing houses—buy and sell them. Legendary writing teacher John Truby provides a guide to understanding the major genres of the story world.

Audible is not the best medium for this book
Revisado: 02-13-25
To me, this book did not live up to the description. In the intro, the book claimed it would address the 14 most important genres AND the unique and important story beats for each one. For some reason, I decided I needed to know what the 'missing' story beats were and understand how they were unique to each genre. I could not pull them out from listening to the book. There were many issues that prevented me from liking to listen to this book. On the top of my list is the incessant reading of lists of names of movies and books that Truby evidently decomposed and diagrammed to come up with his theories about genres.
I ended up buying the Kindle version so I could go back and find out what the story beats were. I was very disappointed when I finally determined what he considered 'story beats' of genres were, what most people would consider interesting similarities. They are certainly not in all, not even present in most stories of the genre.
I was dissapointed that the hype in the intro did not live up to it's promise of new found understanding.

Historia
Rick's recent appearance on Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild chronicled his budget lifestyle and adventures aboard Calypso, and introduced the idea of budget sailing to a whole new audience - an audience who may have never considered the possibility that such a dream could be made a reality, on such a small amount of money. This book is for them and for any experienced sailors who want to cast off the yoke of consumerist yachting and get back to what really matters at sea.

There's a ton of good information in this book
Revisado: 02-13-25
I wasn't too excited about the narration, it kept feeling like I was listening to a salesman. But I got over that when the book started delivering a lot of interesting and worthwhile information. I liked the story too. I think it would be very useful to have a PDF to accompany the audio version with a list of the recommendations and references. Audible is difficult to search when you're looking to find information provided but don't remember where.

Now in a brand–new series collection, The Best Sailing Stories Ever Told brings together such diverse authors as Charles Dickens, Jack London, John Masefield, Stephen Crane, Herman Melville, and dozens more.

‘Quest in the Caribbean’ is the final book in the Quest Series. Wendy and I have learned to become sailors. We thank our lucky stars every day that the sea has been merciful to us. The sea is our home, but it can also be a strict master and unforgiving teacher. We learn our lessons one day and one problem at a time. But more importantly, Wendy and I learn a great deal about each other and what it takes to be good companions on a tiny boat. Compatibility on a cruising boat is the irreplaceable ingredient that keeps the cruise alive. The first chapter of ‘Quest in the Caribbean’ ...

Interesting, but not a page turner
Revisado: 01-21-25
I see that they are accomplished cruisers, and that they had some interesting adventures together, but I don't think this book is worthy of a "recommended read" from me. I really did not care for the virtual voice. There are far too many mispronounced words and an obvious in ability to read numbers or acronyms like a professional narrator.

Veteran sailor and writer Christian Williams invites us along once again on a 5,000-mile voyage of discovery around the North Pacific. Equipped with a new boat, a well-stocked toolbox, and the entire history of philosophic thought, he takes us as crew through squalls and calms deep into a laboratory of the universe that exists only out of sight of land. Funny, erudite, and at times deeply personal, Philosophy of Sailing explores who we are and how encounters with the unknown can be a path to revelation and joy.

Best book I've read on the topic.
Revisado: 01-19-25
I really like this author. I read complaints about his narration, but I set the speed to 1.25 and have no complaints. I like the mix of sailing and philosophy. I enjoyed the self talk, the stories of maintenance and fixes to less than perfect designs. I enjoyed his effective troubleshooting methods and his sense of priorities.
I thought the information at the back of the book was excellent and useful to me.

Most people think the way to write a best seller is to have a lot of talent and even more luck. As you will learn, there is a recipe for success, and luck may be the least important ingredient in creating a best seller. No one has cracked the code better than James Scott Bell. A best-selling author himself, and the author of the number-one best seller for writers, Plot & Structure, Mr. Bell has been teaching the principles of best-selling fiction for over 20 years, principles that apply to any genre or style.

The Best How-to Book on Writing I've Read
Revisado: 09-04-24
First, I really like The Great Courses books, especially the ones with attached pdf files. They save a lot of note taking and and are great reference material. This book and the pdf were better than most. It's the first James Scott Bell book I've bought, but it certainly won't be the last. I like his style, his precision, and his outlook on life. Count me in as a follower.
The coverage of the material was incredible. It did not sound like a lecture. It was more like listening to a mentor that really wants you to succeed. I'll be listening to this again soon.
