Historia
During Notre Dame’s 1973 National Championship football season, Eric Penick scored two of the most important touchdowns in Fighting Irish history: A game breaking 85-yard score against USC and a pivotal TD against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. “A Notre Dame Man: The Life, Lore and Runs of Eric Penick” tells the story behind those runs, what came before, and what came after. Growing up Black in Cleveland during the Civil Rights Era, Penick was bright, charismatic and superbly talented. He was a five-time state champion sprinter and an All American running back at Gilmour Academy, becoming...

Great Story, Terrible Delivery
Revisado: 03-28-24
I lived in the same dormitory as Eric did and met him a number of times. I always thought he was a very nice guy. I graduated before he got the ankle injury. The fact that he graduated , even with the disappointment of the injury, says a great deal about his ability to persevere through adversity. I really hate the Virtual Voice narration, From a tech standpoint it is pretty remarkable but the pronunciation and delivery are very off key. The Eric I met, but did not know intimately, sounded a lot more eloquent than the virtual voice makes him sound.

Revisado: 05-14-21
This book is mainly direction to get naked and listen to a few affirmations that are barely audible over the music. They are repeated incessantly. There is no hypnosis, except in getting you to buy this book. If it improves your sex life, you didn't have one in the first place.

Historia
This exotic historical novel tells the fact-based story of the first group of Europeans to encounter the Maya civilization in 1511. Those who survive their initial enslavement react to this fantastic new world in radically different ways. Two eventually rise to become major players on opposing sides of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. One of the survivors is now considered the father of the first Mestizo children, the ethnic group that makes up the majority of the Mexican population.

So-So
Revisado: 04-10-21
The story is mildly interesting. I have been interested in the Maya for quite some time. The story added very little to what I have picked up over time. I agree with the previous review of the author as narrator. Properly read with a slower, more realistic pace, the story would last at least an hour longer. The ending is probably realistic, but unimaginative. This could have been done so much better.

Five years ago, the US Space Force became a reality. And while those writing the checks took things very seriously, the other military branches did not. As a result, Space Force was populated by undesirables. My name is Captain Ethan Stone, a decorated member of SEAL Team Six turned Space Force "recruit". Flash forward five years and between tenses. President West is in office. Power has shifted. And Space Force is defunded. With just a handful of us still living on base, we find ourselves being evicted. But before all of us can leave, aliens invade.

Historia
The Crimea was one of the crucibles of the war on the Eastern Front, where first a Soviet and then a German army were surrounded, fought desperate battles, and were eventually destroyed. The fighting in the region was unusual for the Eastern Front in many ways, in that naval supply, amphibious landings, and naval evacuation played major roles, while both sides were also conducting ethnic cleansing as part of their strategy - the Germans eliminating the Jews and the Soviets purging the region of Tartars.

Better and Worse Than I Thought
Revisado: 12-04-20
I had an idea what this book would be about from the title. I was wrong. This is a grand-strategy view of the Crimean campaign in WWII. I still don't know why it occurred. Instead of showing the individuals involved (hence the iron crosses reference) the author bombarded us with a huge amount of statistics and unit numbers. I have run into this type of book before and have been unable go go very far into them. The narrator, Michael Prichard, kept the pace up and gave the story as much life as could be given. I did finish it and I learned some things I never knew before or things I did know were put into context, so I'm glad I lasted. The narrator deserves the credit for this.

Historia
Heide wails, jumps up and lands on the other side of the trench, where he slides through the mud like a bulldozer. Our tank starts backing up in full speed. Porta has clearly also spotted the madness lying ahead in wait of spreading death and mutilation. Nothing travels as fast as the rumor that the front troops have hit the dreaded mines. Suddenly everything goes quiet. Even the heavy Maxim gun stops. Everyone holds their breath and waits for the mine to go off.

Use it as an Indication of Conditions
Revisado: 04-04-20
Given the reports of activities of Sven Hassel post war, you have to take this as complete fiction. It is an indication of what the conditions were like on the Russian front. Legion of the Damned was a fairly good book about an aspect of the German army - the punishment battalions. This seems to have strayed from that topic, even though there is some overlap of characters. He keeps adding outrageous characters. The story is stale. The narrator is horrible. He rarely changes inflection, so you can't tell which character is speaking.

Great Story, Wierd Choice of Narrator
Revisado: 04-04-20
I have read this book in print and have always liked it. I don't know if the depiction of Italian politics and national (or lack thereof) identity is accurate now, or even when written. At least it captures the spirit of the Italians. The story line is great. I just have to question the choice of an Aussie with a pronounced accent is the right choice to make us believe he is Italian. On the other hand, the stereotypical Italian accent would be off putting. Maybe an accent like the one the actor Cesare Danova had would work. In any case, the Aussie accent didn't.

Historia
In this audacious recasting of the American Revolution, distinguished historian Gary Nash offers a profound new way of thinking about the struggle to create this country, introducing listeners to a coalition of patriots from all classes and races of American society. From millennialist preachers to enslaved Africans and disgruntled women to aggrieved Indians, the people so vividly portrayed in this book laid down ideas that have become part of our inheritance and ideals toward which we still strive today.

A Realistic Look at the American Revolution
Revisado: 07-01-19
I have waited a long time for a non-fiction book like this. It is a warts-and-all look at the revolution. It avoids most of the cliches in other such histories. It does show some of the flaws, or personal interests, in the prominent actors. It also shows that much of the "gentry" who supported the revolution did not do this because of democracy, but in spite of it. It seems as if they were merely after a change in management, from England to themselves. It also shows that much of the progress during and after the revolution was due to the persistence of the common man. I don't know if all of that was Mr. Nash's aim, but that is what I took from the book. I really liked it and will read it again. It is a lot to take in during one reading.

Historia
Saburo Sakai became a living legend in Japan during World War II. Pilots everywhere spoke in awe of his incredible exploits in the air. Samurai! charts Sakai’s remarkable life from his lowly, poor origins, to signing up with the military at the age of 16, to his conflicts with American aircraft over Guadalcanal where he had the heavy fragments of two 50-caliber machine gun bullets embedded in his skull, through to the moment when Japan eventually surrendered. For many listeners Samurai! will do much to bring the Pacific air war into new perspective.

The Narrator is Terrible
Revisado: 05-21-19
I have listened to the first 9 minutes of this book (after having read it on paper a number of times) and the narrator has mispronounced 3 names incorrectly, including Caidin's and Sakai's. This is going to drive me nuts throughout the rest of the book. Audible should get rid of this version and try again with a better narrator. This is a story worth telling, but the narrator is going to ruin it.
