It was stupid
Revisado: 05-12-24
I made it. I know most people were smarter and ditched the series sooner but I got the books for "free" with my subscription and I have a high tolerance for certain types of stupid so I didnt hit the wall until about an hour and a half left, at which time I almost just quit listening, but i didn't. I was hoping for some revelation that would make it make sense, but there is none.
I have a lot to say about the stupid story and plotholes and the like but spoilers are not good for reviews, so I will say. The motivation for the main video game bad guys makes no sense. The apocalypse that happens in the "real world" is stupid and would only make sense if that too was some type of virtual reality. I was hoping maybe that would be a reveal or maybe this was some AI attempted takeover or something, ANYTHING. But naw, it was stupid on stupid and just ended with cherry on top stupid.
BTW what happened to the two guys in the bunker? (they were as forgotten about almost as much as the igit main characters summons...pretty sure the flyer could have been handy at one point) Also, where there any more players still in pods on earth? Do we even care about them? How about the servers? Do we care that those are likely to fail with no maintenance? Unlike a lot of these stories with an apocalypse, this apocalypse was not long planned for and there was no information in story given for how those servers were to be maintained or how long they are expected to last.
There was possiblity here for this story. The characters were not particularly annoying. There was android technology in the "real world". There were complex AI "gods" in the game world (though lets all forget the NPCs are also just AI). Sometimes an ending can save a mediocre story, but this ending just brutalized this story. Before this book I probably would have rated it a "meh, try it on sale if you have nothing else to do". Now I would say skip it. I got it for free but am annoyed I wasted my time.
Narrrator was fine, and apparently listens to feedback as I think it was about book 5 when he stopped saying H.U.D. and just started saying "hud" like anyone who knows video game rpgs would have been screaming at him about since book 1.

Historia
What is it like for a small flap-eared goblin herbalist to play the role of the Dark Sovereign, the main antagonist for Boundless Realm's hundreds of millions of players? What is it like to find one's self the standard bearer for an army of man-eating giants, cyclops, skeletons, ghosts, and other hellspawn, who don't give a damn about their modest little ruler? Our hero didn't desire such an unenviable fate, but there is no way back now. But the longer he plays, the better he understands that he is just a pawn in someone else's game.

LitRPG with an actual ending, Yay!
Revisado: 04-04-24
Need to start reviewing again so I can keep track of all of these litrpgs.
Summary: This series, while not one of the top ones, certainly is not one of the bottom ones either. It was a nice little listen. All the books are quite short, so not sure I would have purchased them outside of a bundle but I got them in the Plus Catalog and that was a real bargain.
Characters: I like the main characters and did not mind spending time with them. The way the brother and sister talk to each other can be a little odd but I think that is from the story being translated from another language. In the first book the unusual communication style is kind of explained in story, but still conversations between brother and sister and other close friends tend to seem kind of stilted throughout the 4 books. Not horrible though. There is no Harem but MC has a couple of girlfriends/pretty girls hitting on him, but not the blatant grade school stuff you will get with some other short free litrpgs (well ok one of the side characters had a moment of 'why are you this stupid" in relation to a girl but we get past it and forget about it fairly quick)
Narrator: He was fine, He read the book clearly with nothing annoying catching the attention. He doesn't have the range of some other readers I have listened to. For instance, all the women sounded the same and the "French" guy didn't really sound particularly French (and I think in one book he had a different "voice" before reverting back near the end or in the next book, unless I was getting the character mixed up). This is not really an issue as the reader did read the book in a non annoying way.
Story: Overall, the story between the real world and the virtual world was pretty interesting. There are some things that don't make a lot of sense to me but if you roll with it then its fine. For instance, the main premise for the book. I mean I understand that games need testers but the job of just logging in and just playing one forced bad character type is a little odd. It is especially odd as the tester is playing in the released production environment (triple A games always being patched I guess) and doing major events that actual customers could be playing, but whatever, roll with it the story takes some interesting twists. The only "bad part" is how rushed the ending seemed. It was awesome that it did have an ending though. I like a nice complete story as we seem to get so few of them in litprgs. However, I did have to listen to the end twice as they were in the game doing something big and then in the real world doing something big and I was multitasking and thought I missed the ending of the big thing in game. Turns out I only missed what amounted to a handwave. Some books overdo the big fights, this one not so much. The real world ending also had some oddness to it with a similar slight handwave to events and then follow-up explaining what happened. Could the ending all have been written better? Probably, but it still wrapped things up and was fairly satisfying to me.
Overall: I think it was good. Should I have given it 3 stars instead of 4? Probably it is kind of average, but some people see 3 stars as "bad", and I don't want to give that impression. I think people should give this a try and since we are stuck with the star grading system we have I am going to give it 4 stars even though I have given that rating to litrpgs I think are a little better (and maybe to some I thought were a little worse...need to relisten to a couple of the never-ending ones). If you have Plus Catalog pick it up and try it.

Revisado: 11-27-23
I liked the series. I was a little annoyed with Gilbanes evolution in the last book (attitude and seeming naivete) but this book kind of fixed that a bit. I liked that there was a series end and that it resolved in a mostly satisfying way. I would have liked a bit more in the epilogue in regards to the Circle Sea and some of the other lords but otherwise fine.
Characters: I liked them and was happy to spend the time with them.
Story: Solid and came to a conclusion but left openings for your own imagination
Narration: Excellent
Summary: I would recommend the entire series at full price let alone with the 3 book bundle. It was a solid LitRPG that had a satisfactory out of game ending. Though I guess I can see how some would be annoyed with the transition out of the game and the realization the game was ultimately not important (as is the nature of games).

Still good but I felt the shift
Revisado: 11-19-22
This story picks up where the last one leaves off, at the end if the beginning, then there is a definitive shift out of the beginning.
My favorite parts of litrpgs is the beginning, the part of learning the world and the new and exciting possibilities. I am always concerned once the story moves to "old hat" when they stop exploring and everthing is about one big arc of political intrigue where the good guy is continously backstabbed just to try to make something actually "happen", that rarely works for me. This should not be the case here as they have an entire multiverse to play in and the author seems to "identify" with our heroic defier, but most writers cannot keep up the excitement without messing over the MC or breaking the story (for me). It is not clear if the excitement can be maintained in this story either. After all they have already established it takes 10s of 1000s of years for someone to really become a powerhouse and how exciting can that be to read about. Zack has moved faster than most but how fast is realistic?
BTW I am not sure why everyone in the books are so excited to live forever, especially in the terrible peace hating universe they live in. There emerges a character that is just aweful, but I suspect living as long as that person had would make anyone aweful, so why wish for it. Anyway...
Story: Zack Atwood destroys stuff with an axe and Dao. At first satisfying and then a little less so as it sets up future stories. It started getting interesting again, but then ended. I am looking forward to next book though, so it did its job. I will also listen to this book again.
Characters: I still really like everyone but was a little sad as some took more of a back seat here. I did/do have genuine concern for some. The people you are supposed to dislike were properly dislikable...maybe a little too much so in one case.
Narrator: This guy does a great job and has throughout the series.
Summary: I liked the story as it progressed, about halfway through though I started feeling a little...let down(?) maybe nostalgic for the beginning(?)..I don't know. The end did hook me for the next book. At the end of the day I still really like the series but this was not quite as good as previous books at least not after a certain point (for me) I do recommend for anyone that likes the series so far. I will buy next book so, hopefully not a long wait.

Why should I care?
Revisado: 10-21-22
The book starts with an apparently thousand year old super powerful dude using commen current year Earth slang. Why, and how is this, and who is he? In around chapter 4 you get a quick note on that which seemed like a more intersting story than this one.
Do we only find out his name in chapter 4 because he had amnesia? Nope he knew exactly who he was the entire time, the author was just too busy jumping into cultivation to tell us. While this is a cultivation book I kind of want to know who the protagonist is and what challenge he has to overcome so I have a reason to care about his cultivation. I did not have that so it was just all noise, some guy doing stuff and no reason to care.
I put off getting this book because the synopsis made it sound like you were showing up late in the story and I wondered how I could identify with a 1000 year old superpowerful guy (hint earth slang and goofiness is not enough). The book also had a lot of lower reviews when I first looked. Ultimately I was at a time between series and too lazy to do a deep look for something new and saw this had a higher review saying the book was hilarious... also the book was also "free" (with audible subscription)
Is the book hilarious? The character certainly thinks he is hilarious and thats the thing, sometimes I say something that I think is hillarious but I know in reality there may be like 10% of people that would agree, and about 10% that would actively hate me for saying something so stupid, and everyone else would be like "eh....no, no, I get it....so....". I fall in this third category for this book. There is a scene late in the book where he is full on rolling on the floor laughing his butt off and everyone else joins in. I was left wondering if there was a laugh track and if this was a laughter itself being contagious kind of thing because yeah nothing really "funny" happening just another instance of super powerful guy doing the "impossible".
Story: Earth guy gets superpowerful offscreen and gets the boot by more powerful people offscreen and "starts over" on new planet...but he is not really starting over since anything he wants to do he can. The story is just him doing stuff for his own personal good. There is no real struggle, no real antagonist, just a guy cultivating. Other, more interesting people do show up but they are not the focus. Also, the entire book takes place in 2 weeks. I am not sure why authors do this, the guy is already 1000 years old why can't you just make it so all the things that hppened take at least a month or two so that it seems somewhat in the realm of possiblity? Whatever, a lot happened in those two weeks while simulateously nothing happened in those two weeks. There is not even a real hook at the end, why should I bother reading the next book?
Character: Would I hang out with him? Not especially I mean I wouldn't hate it I guess, but there would be no point to it. This guy is so far into himself he would just forget I exists and the jokes he tells for himself, as I said, are not enough to keep me amused. That said, he is not a whiner (but then why would he be when everything he ever wants is super easy to achieve). He also has some decent values (at leasted stated) helping animals, hating slavery and racial prejudice, and a live and let live attitude instead of using his godly powers to make people do what he wants (unless he wants something specific from them)...and he likes coffee so there's that (hey some points to identify with).
Overall: Meh. It was "free", it was noise in my ear as I walked the dogs (even if I was easily distracted from it) and nothing really annoyed me. Nothing really happens. Would I continue with the series? Is it free or super cheap and do I have nothing better to do? If so, then maybe. I am slightly interested in the OTHER people in the story, if we can get away from the main character (just promote him to standoffish godhood already) and focus on the new people struggling to find their power, and if it takes more than a week, and if they face actual antagonists, then probably I would try it. As is I cannot really recommend for credit but some people may enjoy.

New Narrator but good continuation of story
Revisado: 10-01-22
I am still enjoying the story. The new natrator was quite a change, though I am aware it occurred out of necessity, and I am happy the author went with it as I don't have the time to READ the series and I would like to finish it.
At first I was not sure about the new guy but he seemed to relax as the story went on and by the end, I decided it was a good choice, and perhaps fortuitous, as I am note sure the first guy could have pulled off Rygar.
So the story picks up not long after the original one ended. Rygar, the original player, is back in Bloodwraiths old body and he is wants his old Rygar body back...adventure ensues.
I liked the story though am a little concered all of Bloodwraiths allies are women, all of them. I mean there was the option to have a little balance and make one not female but the author choose otherwise. I kept fearing Harem and the author even makes that joke but it still seemed off to me a bit. As a woman myself seeing hollywood ruin series I love with pandering I am a bit twitchy on the subject.
The story is still intersting, though I am still not sure if this is 100% video game or indeed invasion of another world. They seem to introduce somthing that would confirm actual other world but I am not clear on how that would even work and there is always the possiblity of a huge simulated universe. Whatever the author is creating, I want to see more. The hook at the end was pretty good too.
If you like lighter LITRPGs and definitely if you liked the first book I do recommend. Do not get caught up on change of narrators, the first guy had a great voice but sometimes changes cannot be helped and the other guy gets better as the story goes on. The real Rygars voice is annoyung, but he is an annoyong character so it works. I am looking forward to next book in this series.

Nice ending that should have come in last book
Revisado: 09-11-22
I feel like this series went at least one book too long. It took me a while to get myself to listen to it and it felt like a downgrade from the previous couple of series when I started listening to it. I also found myself continuing to check how much time was left, like listening to it was an obligation.
Still at the end, the story of Oren does end. I guess there were supposed to be some twist but it ended about how I expected which is not bad, I liked how it ended. In the book there was one moment of diplomacy and one moment of new powers that were slight suprises but they kind of had to have those to get to the ending in this book.
Story proceeds as you would expect from reading the other books. There are bad jokes from Vic and bad singing from the aussie golem dude. Though mostly golem guy is missing from the book other than the one really bad moment I had to fast forward through as it devolved into a forced dance number like the end of the all female ghostbusters (I despise stupid forced dance numbers)but the 30 second skip was all that was needed. The story was long but is now done, though a "post credits" statement threatens some type of "darker" continuation (not sure why, but i guess there will be an audience for it).
Narration: The main guy does ok. He does voices well enough you can generally tell whose talking. The lady does OK but really has no range and all women characters mostly sound the same. I have grown to dislike "special effects" and music. The music in a conversation at the end I found particularly distracting and annoying.
Summary: I really liked the series at first but it faded over time. It never devolved into a complete trainwreck like some and stayed a solid story until the end, I just think it took a little too long to get to that end, but at least we did get a proper ending.
I would recommend it if you liked the series up to this point. I also will say this story maybe more compelling if you are listening to the complete series all at once. I started the series a couple of years ago and while listening to this I had that feeling of having moved on. I may revisit the entire series at some point in the future, but right now I am not "feeling it".

LITRPG book 6 and I want book 7 now
Revisado: 09-03-22
I reviewed the first book but then was too busy listening to the rest of the series to review any of the other until now. If book 7 was out I would have instead started it, sadly it's not so here is my series review until now. I love it, but it would not surprise me if others disagree.
The series starts with the end/start of the world. Current Earth is intergrated into "the system" where it is mashed together with a three other planets and basically turned into a video game starting zone. More experienced "players" (but not too experienced) from other planets/factions are invited to invade to see if the earthlings (and others native to the other three planets) can evolve into great and powerful warriors.
Zack was on a camping trip when this happened. After catching a super lucky break at the very start of the integration he finds himself alone on an island with one of the invading alien (player) groups. He proceeds to act with the persistence and resiliance of Wolverine (the comic character) and beats down the first group of aliens single handedly. He then goes on to gather more lucky breaks and super human powers and beat up more groups (some annoying fellow humans included). And then he beats up more baddies....and then more....and then more. Yup that's pretty much the plot. I know it seems thin, but really it's a pretty good power fantasy. Zack does face challenges, so I would NOT say he's a Mary Sue. Also not every girl is falling all over him, so the power fantasy seems to be limited to the actual game so thats nice. Also I, personally, find the world really, really interesting.
First book starts with Zack all alone on an island and it is all Zack kicking around aliens and leveling up. The more books the more side characters are added, and the more we learn about the world, and the more Zacks stronghold is built up. Sure at the end of the day it is "Zach Smash" but I think it's entertaining while getting there. Also I am interested to see where the technocrat stuff takes the story.
Characters: In the first book I thought Zack was pretty bland. I didn't dislike him but I didn't think he was super interesting either. Over 6 books he has grown on me. It helps to have other characters to play off of and to see how he acts in different scenarios. Sometimes I do not agree with his actions but overall I am Team Zack though Ogras is cool too (I am a little mad with the Alaya thing but we will see where it goes).
Narrator: Guy does a great job. I think there are a few little word errors in the book but I am confident that is the author and not narrator. Narrator does voices good enough and changes his tone in all the right places and had consistent pronounciation though the 6 books.
Summary. Nice LitRPG series. Each book is nice and long without being boring (to me) so you get your moneys worth. MC seems like he is a little overpowered but then the author supercharges the rest of the universe. This does result in a super crazy powerful universe, but then that is what the "system" was aiming to create. I still think it is funny when the MC hears someone spent 100,000 years to get somewhere and then he acts like he should be there by next month, but the whole living for 100,000,000 years is a crazy unbalanced universe anyway. I guess all the wars are necessary to keep the population in check. Anyway 6 long books in and I am not annoyed with anything and am still eager to see where the story goes. So to me this is a recommend. It is LITRPG with stats and level ups so if you are not into that you can skip. if you are, give it a try.

Pretty Good

This is a story takes place on a apocalyptic Earth. Though it was an odd apocalypse not cause by humanity, or natual disaster, or even alien invasion(not the typical kind) but by another force. This other force called the System (which is sort of explained late in the book) likes to test people with games and so now the Multiverse (all of existence the System feels like messing with) is run like a game (the how this is accomplished is uh...it's magic, just roll with it).
Earth is brought into the game along with a couple of other new planets. The system does a little map randomization, sets up challenges for the new "players" and off we go. We follow the exploits of Zack Atwood. Just a random guy out camping when earth is brought into the game. Zack gets an immediate super lucky break, then gets some advice which makes him do stuff that makes him even super-er lucky and thus we have a nice OP MC kicking butt and taking names. Oddly the book ends one butt kicking sooner than I would have expected so not a complete story. If you like it though going to story two should be no issues as I think there are 6 books out as of 2022 and they are all nice and long, but for me this first book,at least, did not drag and was enjoyable all the way through.
Characters: Most of the book is just Zack. Zack is...a guy.... I mean he's fine. There is nothing super interesting about Zack, he is not particularly witty but not really annoying either, just a guy. He pretty much rolls with the end of reality as he knew it and embraces the new reality. He does spend a minute or so thinking about friends and family but the story does not linger on that so don't go looking for any deep emotional stuff here (which was fine with me).
Narration: It was good. Read clearly and voices distinguishing characters (when other characters finally show up). No complaints.
Summary: As far as LitRPGs go I would list this in my high-mid tier (so far). The story is not particularly deep (so far), there is questing and grinding and stat placement and all the things you expect from LITRPGs. Well except there is no "Real world" outside the game world as those are now the same thing. The character himself is not particularly interesting but not a depressing/irritating bore either. I personally thought the world (Multiverse) concept here is intersting and I am looking forward to see if the author can keep it interesting going forward.
Despite post apocalyptic setting this is not a particularly "Dark" or "realistic" book. So if thats what you want this book is not for you. There also does not appear to be deep meaning, or preaching, or Harems, and I don't recall cussing so nothing too bad if it happened. There is lot and lots of bloody killing though but the story doesn't glorify in it, it's just that this is how the world is now. If you are looking for a basic Litrpg that has an interesting world concept and is not too stressful to listen to then i say try it. The length makes it a good buy. I am off to book 2.
