Historia
Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

How many stupid characters can one book have?
Revisado: 09-24-24
After getting half way through this book, I returned it. I couldn't take the characters making one stupid decision after another. The "heroine" won't destroy the Book of Doors, even though the evil bad guys can use it to destroy the world. The "hero" leaves Izzy, the heroine's best friend, behind to be tortured. The "scary but kindly" giant saves Izzy but leaves the evil bad guy alive (he had the change to kill him while he was unconscious) and doesn't take his books. So, of course, the evil bad guy gets his hands on the Book of Doors and pushes the heroine into the past. And just to add sadism to the story, there's an evil woman too, who loves to inflict pain. This included a little girl just walking with her mother down a London street.
I'm sorry I wasted 6 hours! I kept thinking it would get better.

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

will try to finish
Revisado: 07-01-24
I bought this book to read for my bookclub. I wish I bought the actual book. It might be better. As usual when an author reads their own book, they shouldn't! The "guncle" character is supposedly astonished by everything the kids don't know but it gets tiresome pretty early on to hear the author's portal of astonished. Since I can't return the book, I will try and finish it only because of my bookclub.
I also can't believe they're going to make a movie out of it. An "Uncle Buck" remake?

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

January LaVoie is always a pleasure to listen to and she doesn't disappoint with this book. The book itself is very good. it was "a page turner."

one of the stupidest books I've ever bothered trying to listen to
Revisado: 06-09-24
Soppy romance triangle is WAY overplayed if what you want is mystery and the supernatural, which is what I thought I was getting. I really can't believe I thought it would get any better. Pure drivel.

Historia
Sasha Pierce hasn’t had a single dream since she was a child...until she accepts a substitute teaching position in the charmingly witchy village of Old Middleton. Her first dream in twenty-five years ought to be enchanting, but her wonder quickly turns to shock when she realizes that it’s not a dream at all, but an entirely different sort of magic. Catapulted through an ancient portal into the fairytale kingdom of Between, Sasha’s astonishment is swiftly upgraded to panic when she accidentally performs a supposedly impossible feat and is declared the True Queen of Between.

Fun fantasy
Revisado: 03-04-24
Honestly, I'm amazed I listened to all 32 hours straight through without listening to something else in the middle of the two parts. It really caught my fancy. The book is mostly for younger women, and some readers will pan it for that reason. But taken with an open mind, it was fun AND I hope there's more to come.

How can people give this narrator 4s and 5s?
Revisado: 02-14-24
I listened to the first book and was really hoping there was a different narrator for the second but there wasn't. I like the story but this narrator is awful. Instead of making the main character sound coy and flirty, she sounds nasty and snide. All the men sound angry and incredibly haughty. If the third book is narrated by the same person, I may as well give up listening now. Turns out that not only this series is narrated by Elizabeth Evans, all of Sarah Maas' books are. Too bad Sarah. You've lost me but you've got plenty of other fans luckily for you.

This book takes 9 chapters to even get to the true plot and that is to recreate a dinosaur, a la Frankenstein. Enough!

The story is pretty good. The voice.... not so great but okay enough to listen to the story. I listened to one book with a female virtual voice and that was better than the male.

Historia
London, November 3, 1881. A young woman slips through the curtains of fog down Pendy Corner to the 26th house in the row. She vacillates at the gate. For, past that sullen door, she must seek the help of the distinctively eccentric and impatient young language expert named Basil Collingwood. The fate of Europe, and indeed, the free peoples of the world may depend upon getting him to understand her. The only trouble? She cannot speak a word.

It's really too bad that this narrator is so bad that I probably won't continue the series. Plus these books are pretty short to pay a full credit for.
