Shrewsbury, 1866. Julian Lockyer is an imposing gentleman in his late fifties. Having reserved a room for the night at the Station Hotel, he asks to be called early in the morning because he has a train to catch. Repeated attempts are made to wake him but there is no response. a different twist in the series
Revisado: 03-16-25
this particular story is a bit different from previous Colbeck tales. there's really two tales that have similar themes but no real connection. Madelyn is given her own mystery to solve and does so, but she comes off just a bit too self depreciating about her artistry. colbeck's mystery has superintendent Tallis either changing his style or acting out of character. leiming is portrayed as less of a partner for collect than usual. but it's well done and the themes of the two mysteries is also handled well.

bad narration

love good historical stories, especially those prior to the industrial revolution. Sadly, this is one I'll have to read in print. I struggled with a narration that has as much animation as the reading of a grocery list, and finally gave up.

Historia
In an era of hardening religious attitudes and explosive religious violence, this book offers a welcome antidote. Richard Holloway retells the entire history of religion - from the dawn of religious belief to the 21st century - with deepest respect and a keen commitment to accuracy. Writing for those with faith and those without, and especially for young listeners, he encourages curiosity and tolerance, accentuates nuance and mystery and calmly restores a sense of the value of faith.

prejudiced
Revisado: 09-05-24
the author focuses on the conflicts and sects of Christianity , but completely ignores voodoo, fantasia, all of the south and north American religions and sufis, among others. he glosses over the interline conflicts of Sunni and Shia Islamic groups and ignores the various conflicts within Buddhism. he asserts that the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths are uniquely violent, but ignores that it may well be a mere fact of written records. Certainly mass sacrifices were conducted Aztec and wars were conducted to obtain sacrifices. there's the Greek stories of gods deciding to kill whole groups ( Trojan war, Promethius, etc) sumeria, assyria etc certainly thought their city gods were on their side..... Even when addressing Christianity, the author focuses on the US. no mention of the Inquisition for example, or the crusade against sects (Albigensian crusade/ cathar sect). not really worth even a discounted price.

Historia
Lynne Cox, internationally famous for swimming the world’s most difficult waterways without a wetsuit, and able to endure water temperatures so cold that it would kill anyone else, recognizes and celebrates all forms of athleticism in others, human or otherwise. And when she saw a video of a Newfoundland dog leaping from an airborne helicopter into Italian waters to save someone from drowning, Cox was transfixed by the rescue, and captivated by the magnificence, physicality, and daring of the dog.

not much about AL
Revisado: 09-01-24
most of this production is anecdotes of the authors experiences, food discussions, a travelogue and stories of other dogs. there's maybe 10% about AL. nor is there any real details of the history of the program, any other places that use water rescue dogs.

Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Historia
Nationally bestselling author of Daughters of Sparta Claire Heywood returns with an imaginative and female-centered reinterpretation of the myth of the great hero Perseus, told through the voices of three women who are sidelined in the traditional version—his mother, Danae; his trophy, Medusa; and his wife, Andromeda—but whose viewpoints reveal a man who is not, in fact, a hero at all.

disappointed
Revisado: 06-13-24
the author indeed presents a story with nothing supernatural and I suppose it is plausible. However, none of the characters are appealing. perseus is frankly a psychic sociopath. I don't find his transformation particularly believable. the three women are naive or stupid . there certainly are such people, but i could have hoped for stronger and smarter women. there were plenty of historical women one could have used as an example.

Historia
With his tumultuous love life, relentless pursuit of a male heir, and drastic religious transformation, England's King Henry VIII's life sounds more like reality television than history. He was a man of fascinating contradictions. What could have caused his incredible paradoxes? Could there be a simple medical explanation for the king's descent into tyranny? Where do the answers lie? Blood will tell.

opinionated
Revisado: 06-01-24
the author posits an interesting theory regarding Henry the eighth, but sadly there's not a lot of provided evidence. moreover, the author diverts into asserting varying intelligence or stupidity about the same person among those who interacted with Henry. she asserts the Richard III story, which is both irrelevant to Henry 8 and by actual documented evidence, untrue. asserting that modern mores are not applicable, she condemns Anne of cleves for watching bull baiting and yet excuses Jane for her infidelity....and again, neither are especially relevant to the postulated medical condition of Henry 8. not impressed.
