Historia
The women of Hope River trust midwife Patience Hester, whose skill in delivering babies is known for miles around. But though the Great Depression is behind them, troubles are not, for Europe is at war...and it can only be a matter of time before the US enters the fray. And while some are eager to join the fight, Patience’s husband, Daniel, is not. Daniel is a patriot - but he saw too much bloodshed during the First World War and has vowed never to take up arms again. His stance leaves Patience and their four children vulnerable as the government imprisons Daniel for his beliefs.

Poor narrator compared to first three books
Revisado: 05-30-24
The narrator in the first three books in this series was terrific. The narrator in this 4th book was awful. She sang the songs referred to as if she was some loud soloist. It was like nails on a chalkboard. Also her volume went way up and then down. Very disturbing.

Historia
Rollie Finnegan is a man of few words. As a former Pinkerton agent with two decades of experience under his belt, he uses his stony silence to break down suspects and squeeze out confessions. Hence the nickname Stoneface. Over the years, he’s locked up plenty of killers. Now he’s ready to make a killing - for himself.. There’s gold in the mountains of Idaho Territory. And the town of Boar Gulch is a golden opportunity for a tough guy like Finnegan. But when he arrives, the local saloon owner is gunned down in cold blood - and Finnegan makes a cold calculation of his own.

Historia
Dick Francis’ witty blend of horseplay and mystery is an incredible combination. As a result, each of his equestrian novels gallops onto best-seller lists. In Twice Shy, Dick Francis whips up a fast-paced race through the risky world of horse betting. It begins when, offering little explanation, a friend thrusts some cassette tapes into Jonathan Derry’s hands. But when the young man tries to play them, he realizes that, instead of “Oklahoma!”, he’s been given taped computer programs.

Worst Dick Francis book ever
Revisado: 07-02-22
I've read dozens of Dick Francis books. I read them to be entertained, to follow a mystery, to read about the world of horse racing, etc. This book had none of it. I struggled to keep going. Don't waste your time.

Plodding storyline interspersed with just enough action to keep me hooked. So, I hang in there and then am handed a bust of an ending. Wish I'd spent my time on a different book.

Narrator ruins story
Revisado: 03-28-22
I wanted to love this book, but I couldn't get into it. I started a dozen times and kept losing interest as the narrator was so dull and sing-songy. Each time I listened it all sounded alike. Not worth a free book!

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

This is a well narrated novel based on real people and situations during WW2. The very different lives of two women from both the German and British perspective are followed and ultimately intertwined.

Revisado: 01-24-22
I have read and enjoyed all the previous books in this series. But who wrote this boring, plotless peppering of dialogue after dialogue? Unrecognizable. Skip this one so you won't have a bad taste in your mouth as your final memory for an otherwise impressive series. I even sped it up to 1.20.
