Historia
The Lockheed SR-71, unofficially known as the Blackbird, was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed Skunk Works. The aircraft flew so fast and high that not one was ever shot down, even by a missile. SR-71 pilot and instructor Colonel Richard Graham offers a rare cockpit perspective on how regular Air Force pilots and navigators transformed themselves into SR-71 Blackbird crews, turning their unique aviation talents to account in an unprecedented way.

Interesting, though at times too technical
Revisado: 04-20-25
In the mid 70s, my father was stationed at Kadena as a Russian linguist flying on RC-135s. I was fortunate enough to have spent part of my childhood watching the Habu fly. With the depth of technical detail available these days on the Habu, I laugh thinking back to the airplane being on static display during an open house, and the crew there (one behind the ropes in a regular flight suit, the other in a step van, reclining and dressed out in his pressure suit) to “answer questions,” such as Q: “How high does it fly?”
A: “Really high.” Q: “How fast does it fly?”
A: “Really fast.”
This was an interesting book, though I thought my mind would go numb with some of the minutiae of the systems & their function.

Historia
In The German Aces Speak II, Heaton and Lewis paint a picture of the war through the eyes of four more of Germany's most significant pilots, put together from numerous interviews personally conducted by Heaton from the 1980s through the 2000s. The four ex-Luftwaffe fighter aces bring the past to life as they tell their stories about the war, their battles, their off-duty lives, their lives after the war, and perhaps most importantly, how they felt about serving under the Nazi leadership of Hermann Göring and Adolf Hitler.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing each of these gentlemen’s stories. You come to realized that these guys weren’t really any different than our own pilots & aircrew. They were flying and fighting for their country, despite despising their fanatical “leaders.” They seemed like men with a sense of duty and honor, who it would have been great to have a beer or two with, and just listen to their experiences. They had no use for politics, or the party that held their country hostage, knowing that they had to tread carefully because criticism of the leadership tended to be “unhealthy.” Fantastic books!

Historia
In the dark days after the devastating Pearl Harbor attacks during the spring of 1942, the United States was determined to show the world that the Axis was not invincible. Their bold plan? Bomb Tokyo. On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25s, known as the Doolittle Raiders, hit targets across Japan before escaping to China. The eighth plane, however, did not follow the other raiders. Instead, Plane 8's pilots, Captain Edward "Ski" York and Lieutenant Bob Emmens, never attacked Tokyo, but headed across Japan to the Soviet Union, supposedly due to low fuel.

I’ve been a big fan of Dan Hampton’s work ever since I picked up “Viper Pilot.” This book did not disappoint. With everything I’d ever read or watched about the Doolittle raid, I’d never heard anything about a crew landing in Russia. Very interesting!

Strap into a mortar-fired parachute, a rocket-powered ejection seat, and fly with Col Chuck Lehman in the fastest single engine jet fighter ever built, the F-106 Dart. Feel the exhilaration of hurtling through the blue at a mile every 2.35 seconds, the “G” forces, and the satisfaction of keeping the bad guys out of our airspace. You’ll laugh at some of these stories, sweat out a few, and ask, “How could he have been so stupid?” in others.

Rare to find a book about the F-102/106
Revisado: 01-09-25
Interesting stories about a seldom covered subject- namely the ADC & the F-106 and 102. The narration was irritating at times- constantly defining the same terms over and over “angels 45 - forty five thousand feet…” repeated each time an altitude is mentioned.
And MiG pronounced “em eye gee” 🙄😂
Otherwise a good read.

Historia
Sure to rank as one of the greatest aviation memoirs ever written, Viper Pilot is an Air Force legend's thrilling eyewitness account of modern air warfare. From 1986 to 2006, Lt. Col. Dan Hampton was a leading member of the Wild Weasels, the elite Air Force fighter squadrons whose mission is recognized as the most dangerous job in modern air combat. Weasels are the first planes sent into a war zone, flying deep behind enemy lines purposely seeking to draw fire from surface-to-air missiles and artillery. They must skillfully evade being shot down - and then return to destroy the threats, thereby making the skies safe for everyone else to follow.

Revisado: 10-26-24
I first discovered this book at my local library, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since then, I’ve re-read the print version a time or two, and now added the audiobook. I enjoy Mr. Hampton’s writing style- he tells it like it is (or was), and doesn’t pull any punches. No pc revisionist history here, or that I’ve found in any of his writings. I highly recommend this and any of his other books.

Good story, a little long. Narrator irritating.
Revisado: 11-18-23
While I enjoyed the story, I was surprised at its length-it does seem like it could’ve been condensed somewhat. The narrator was irritating IMHO. The almost breathless, raspy tone, what seemed to me to be almost over acting (reminded me of William Shatner on Star Trek, sounding overly dramatic)…the drawn out, whispered “click….click” with drawn out pause when someone zippered the mic (two quick clicks- not the drawn out version of this narrator), and the mispronounced city names, terms, jargon and such. It just seems that if you’re going to narrate a book like this, maybe do your homework. I’ll avoid this guy in the future.

Historia
Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits, an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes, had earned him the label "social deviant". No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

Historia
Every war has its "bridge" - Old North Bridge at Concord, Burnside's Bridge at Antietam, the railway bridge over Burma's River Kwai, the bridge over Germany's Rhine River at Remagen, and the bridges over Korea's Toko Ri. In Vietnam it was the bridge at Thanh Hoa, called Dragon's Jaw. For seven long years hundreds of young US airmen flew sortie after sortie against North Vietnam's formidable and strategically important bridge, dodging a heavy concentration of anti-aircraft fire and enemy MiG planes. Many American airmen were shot down, killed, or captured....

Well written and informative. I’ve read a lot of different books on the Vietnam War, and the air war in particular. I knew this was a difficult bridge to take down, but hadn’t appreciated just how difficult. Also good to see the author’s not shy away from shining a light on LBJ’s & McNamara’s absolute incompetence.
