All the hard-hitting, nonstop, Tier One action of Arisen, just without the Zombies… so this time the bad guys shoot back!! Everything you could possibly want from Fuchs and Bray, and then some! The main story line resolves, but I really hope the is the beginning of a series. It does not disappoint!!

True, Joan Allen was the wrong choice for this book as she lacks the gravitas this text merits. But the story is so riveting it’s not hard to get over it. Fascinating to get the inside perspective on the highest echelons of government wrapped up in a thrilling, frighteningly plausible, terrorist/espionage plot! Loved the not-at-all subtle character assassinations!

Memo from Turner features a cleverly written mystery plot that keeps you guessing, populated with intriguing, complex characters. But what really sets this book apart is the relentless series of brilliantly conceived and executed action sequences. Willocks, who is a doctor, uses his medical knowledge to stunning effect in crafting what has to be some of the wildest, most brutal scenes ever written. Be warned: this book is ultra hard to put down so it might be best to target it gm for a weekend when you have little to do.

Any additional comments?

I was a huge fan of the Mitch Rapp series, it was one of my all time favorite guilty-pleasures. Sure, Rapp is something of an over-the-top unstoppable force in a binary world where everything is either super-good or super-bad, but sometimes it's nice to just lose yourself in a story about a lone individual overcoming incredible obstacles to serve justice to clear cut bad guys. It’s not only entertaining, it’s cathartic, and so we suspend belief and root for the guy who embodies our inner badass. But everything has its limits. Yes, of course, we know Rapp is going to survive and get the bad guys in the end (that’s the whole point of this type of literature), but it’s only exciting when the odds are so stacked against him it seems almost impossible he’ll pull through. Flynn recognized that, and did a really good job of keeping things exciting. But Mills got waaaaaaay too carried away with Rapp’s invincibility. More than invincibility: his perfection. There’s nothing Rapp doesn’t do in this book better than anyone else in the world. And not just when it comes to hero type stuff like shooting and hand-to-hand combat. Even silly things, like making pancakes. I’m not exaggerating, he makes pancakes in the book and Mills goes on for a whole paragraph about how they’re the best pancakes, and then the person eating the pancakes says they’re the best she’s ever had. The book is so filled with exaltations of Rapp’s good qualities and ridicule of the antagonists’ failings, it’s difficult to imagine the odds stacked up against the former in favor of the latter. And so it just got boring.I was really bummed, I so wanted to like this book as much as the rest of the series. I normally can’t stop listening to these books and zip through them in two days. With this one, by the time I was a third of the way through, I was forcing myself to keep listening. I finally gave up when I was about an hour from the end (which I’ve never done before). So sad, I really liked this series. But Mills is too in love with Rapp to write him into any precarious situations (i.e., an exciting storyline against an intimidating enemy). Anyway, here’s a solid alternative recommendation: Alex Berenson’s John Wells series. Similar main character (total badass, though with just enough vulnerability to make him the underdog), frightening adversaries, and also narrated by George Guidall.

I love Charles Cumming's work, and his writing here doesn't in and of itself disappoint. The characters are interesting, very fleshed out, and, true to Cumming's form, thoroughly psychologically explored. The problem is that the story goes nowhere. There's no real third act, it just ends without any satisfying resolution. I went from thoroughly enjoying myself to thoroughly disappointed in a turn of the proverbial page. Really unfortunate.
