Overall, a poor effort
Revisado: 05-03-25
Easily the worst book I ever had from Audible,. The narration was amateurish was constantly mispronouncing words that showed the narrator had no knowledge of the subject at all. This is more common than you would think. Like BAR(browning automatic rifle) consistently pronounced as “bar” or the IRA (Irish Republican Army) consistently pronounced as Ira. Overall, a pretty poor effort.

Historia
T. E. Lawrence’s memoir of his involvement in leading a portion of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman empire during the first World War. The Ottomans had joined the side of Germany and the Central Powers in the war, and Britain hoped that a successful revolt would take them out of the war effort. Britain had also promised the Arabs that England would recognize a single Arab state. With the support of Emir Faisal and his tribesmen, T. E. Lawrence helped organize and carry out attacks on the Ottoman forces from Aqaba in the south to Damascus in the north.

There were lots of breaks in the audio. Blanking out picking up in the middle of a sentence.

Poor audio. Difficult to understand the readers accent. This was disappointing. Lawrence is one of my favorite historical characters and I was looking forward to hearing his own writing. .

Historia
The battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of World War II. The German capture of the city, their encirclement by Soviet forces shortly afterwards, and the hard-fought but futile attempts to relieve them, saw bitter attritional fighting and extremes of human misery inflicted on both sides. In this title, a renowned expert on warfare on the Eastern Front reveals the often-overlooked German counteroffensive post-Stalingrad, and how it prevented the whole Axis front line from collapsing.

The book was boring and I literally don’t worry about that because I use the audiobooks to help me sleep. But I couldn’t wait to finish this one.

In The Templars, author Michael Haag offers a definitive history of these loyal Christian soldiers of the Crusades - sworn to defend the Holy Land and Jerusalem, but ultimately damned and destroyed by the Pope and his church.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 03-15-23
I felt like I had been conned into reading this. Urban yuppie types who have never even heard of three of the foods and couldn’t be bothered to actually find the real thing for their faux banquet. If Mark Twain was still around he would have skewered this bunch (and especially the chef!) for the elitist city slickers they truly are. Roasted them. A lame attempt to cover their witty, tableside discussions of Clemens consisting of numerous little factoids most people already know, and they could’ve picked up on their way over. The chefs attitude was insulting-too squeamish to even touch these basic American staples. 1 1/2 stars for him.

Historia
Admittedly small and vulnerable, PT boats were, nevertheless, fast - the fastest craft on the water during World War II - and Dick Keresey's account of these tough little fighters throws new light on their contributions to the war effort. As captain of PT 105, the author was in the same battle as John F. Kennedy when Kennedy's PT 109 was rammed and sunk. The famous incident, Keresey says, has often been described inaccurately and the PT boat depicted as unreliable and ineffective.

Finest primary first person account of the times I have read
Revisado: 03-03-23
Wonderfully written, beautifully narrated riveting account of his experiences in the Pacific theater. I would like to say he is a fine writer but such would hardly do him justice. The sort of insightful prose one might expect from the editor of the Columbia law review. Biting, irascible, sarcastic- wonderful.

This is a wonderful book.
Revisado: 12-31-21
I am told there was a time when every school in the United States contained at least two books. The Bible and Slocum. Having read the book some years ago I found the language again delightful and the reader a pleasure to listen to. I could recommend this to anyone. Having no knowledge of much of the nautical terminology I was constantly checking my dictionary. This was no hardship only adding to the fascinating story.

Or “Rocky’s Space Adventure”
It had been a while since I listened to a sci-fi book. This was definitely more in the romance genre.
Wordy. Predictable plot line and ending. Or if you like the romance books you’ll probably like this one.
