Egypt, 1400s BC. The pharaoh's pampered second daughter, lively, intelligent Hatshepsut, delights in racing her chariot through the marketplace and testing her archery skills in the Nile's marshlands. Beautifully done!!!
Revisado: 01-25-24
I did a research paper on Hatshepsut in college, and have always felt a close affinity with her legacy and Ancient Egypt in general. So when I found this title I HAD to give it a listen and I am so glad I did! Compelling, engaging, hard to stop listening. As historically accurate as possible with what little we know of the enigmatic female Pharaoh. I can’t say enough about how much I loved this book. If you have any interest at all in Egyptology, and are willing to have enough of an open mind to fill in the blanks of antiquity, this is well worth the time to listen.

Overly descriptive, but the ending was good
Revisado: 12-20-23
Perhaps I simply don’t like Susan Hill’s writing style, but I was not very impressed by this story.
I had already seen the movie, so I was naturally interested in the source material. I had also read and enjoyed the short story “Dolly” by Hill, so I wanted to try more of her work.
I was a little disappointed by this book. I found her style tediously descriptive. Instead of setting ambience and tone it frustrated me because I just wanted to hear the story. The story itself is compelling but the execution is muddy and slow, so that it felt like important details were buried in descriptions. The last hour and a half was the most active part of the story, but it felt like I had to slog through a lot of unnecessary words to get there.
The ending is intense and sad. I wish the whole book was as engaging as the ending.
The sound effects were cool but didn’t add enough to make the slower parts more interesting. The narrator was good. I’d be willing to listen to more of his narrations.

Historia
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

Shocking and disturbing

Very good read, shocking and intriguing. Some parts ran on a bit long for my taste, giving more detail than I felt was necessary. But still worth listening

Surprising story
Revisado: 11-09-23
There were a lot of unexpected elements to the story. The premise is simple, people encounter a “haunted” house… but is it really haunted? Or is it the visitors? It might sound cliche but I can honestly say this story surprised me over and over again. Intriguing and compelling twist on a classic horror trope.

Loved it
Revisado: 05-17-23
I absolutely love both books in this series. Despite the ending being a little *too easy* I still enjoyed the whole story immensely. Gripping, creepy, colorful, all the yes.
Narrator was wonderful too. At the end when he said “this was read by Michael Crouch” I almost thought he should have said “read by Tark Halloway” because he was THAT convincing and engaging as the first person storyteller.
Highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of horror, especially stories based in Asian culture and history (I.e. The Ring, The Grudge, etc)

Historia
Kat Grant and Alice Campbell have a friendship forged in shared confidences and long lunches lubricated by expensive wine. Though they're very different women - the artsy socialite and the struggling suburbanite - they're each other's rocks. But even rocks crumble under pressure. Like when Kat's financier husband, Howard, plunges to his death from the second-floor balcony of their South Florida mansion. Howard was a jerk, a drunk, a bully, and, police say, a murder victim. The questions begin piling up.

Gripping, if slightly predictable
Revisado: 03-10-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narration wasn’t perfect… maybe a bit slow and monotone at times. But it didn’t detract much from the story itself.
The ending was somewhat predictable. I say somewhat because, without giving anything away, the truth to the major mystery itself was not surprising… Perhaps I wasn’t as surprised as I could have been at the ending due to having read a couple of other novellas by this author and hearing similar endings. A couple of lesser mysteries solved at the very end did surprise me, but helped explain the driving force of the characters.
That being said, I was gripped and enthralled by this story. It was well worth a listen and kept me on my toes. I felt sympathy and anxiety for the characters and genuinely cared about them. I do recommend giving this a chance.

Well worth reading
Revisado: 02-08-22
Creepy, haunting, sad, but with a satisfying twist ending. Well worth a read. The narrator’s voice is a little monotone and slightly robotic, but her timbre adds to the uncomfortably tense tone of the book. There is a hint of madness in Mia, beyond the normal confusion and insecurity of her adolescence. Reminds me of Merricat from Shirley Jackson’s “We Have Always Lived in the Castle”. Great read

Historia
'Good Lady Ducayne' is a sensational tale of a young woman, Bella Rolleston, who secures a job as a paid companion to a very elderly and wealthy aristocratic lady who offers her a handsome salary, a winter travelling on the Italian Riviera and the Italian Lakes and very little to do. It all seems too good to be true. And when Bella learns that the old lady's previous two companions died under mysterious circumstances and she herself is becoming paler and sicker...it does seem as though something sinister is afoot.

Bad Narration

The narration made it very difficult to enjoy this story. I did enjoy it a little bit as it was a sinister and subtle vampire story. Hopefully there may be a better version recorded soon.
