This is giving with a sastifying end though. Thoughts who may had trauma like this, the author makes it a great way to communicate how the pratogonist is feeling throughout.

i loved this story and performance. it really puts the listener in the girl's shoes. i love the thought of my cats waiting for the moment to attack to protect me. ultimately empowering and more than a bit odd in a good way. unique with detailed description.

I can’t believe I didn’t anticipate the ending - a pleasant surprise that good overcomes evil yet the innocence is lost nonetheless

i don’t normally leave reviews, but like the title says, the story was good yet the narrator was bad. i almost DNFed this book 10 minutes in simply due to the narration, but stuck through it because i wanted to know how it ended.

the narrator sounded automated but not in a good way, and mispronounced “feral” the whole book. if you’re going to read this book, i suggest doing so on kindle or physical as i’m sure it would be much more enjoyable that way. the only reason why i stuck with the audio was because i was working so i couldn’t sit and read the physical book.

overall though, the story was great and had good depth for it being 80 pages or so. following a 13 year old girl through the stresses of puberty, school, and a new step dad, she befriends a feral cat who quickly becomes her protector from the things that hide in the dark.

a tale of abuse and despair in the American suburbs. The focus is on a young adolescent growing up in a dysfunctional home.there are only two or three main characters but they are finely drawn and utterly believable. oates is a pro and knows exactly how to tell this simple but gripping tale. the narrator has trouble with male voices but it is not a serious problem.

this is the 3rd book in the "dark corners" series from Amazon that I've listened to and not a single one has disappointed.
