Beautiful use of language
Revisado: 04-11-25
It’s about time there was a story out there that was not about a dystopian future or acatastrophic past. It was a pleasure spending time in this universe, even if it only lasted a few hours.. it was a few hours well spent.

Not worth my time or money
Revisado: 04-01-25
After listening for a couple of hours, I just got bored. The characters are completely uninterested to me, as is the plot which I’m sure we’ll develop at some point. I just haven’t reached that point yet.

Historia
Matthew Scudder investigates the brutal murder of a woman known as the “bag lady.” A seemingly homeless woman, she turns out to have distributed her substantial wealth in a complex will naming random strangers. Where did the money come from? Why was she living in such reduced circumstances? And why in the world did she choose these beneficiaries—the owner of a local newspaper stand, a neighbor she rarely spoke to, the detective himself—when her real friends and acquaintances got nothing at all? And how is all this linked to her murder?

A waste of $.75
Revisado: 06-14-24
Authors should not read their work. If this short story has been any longer, I would not have been able to listen. I understand the point, but it was very poorly made. Not only did I waste $.75. I also wasted an hour or so of my time.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Takes a while to get into
Revisado: 11-20-23
These are some of the most enjoyable characters I spend time with, and truly look forward to their company.
In this particular case, it really took a while to get into the story, as though the editors didn’t realize it was quite wordy. But once into it, hard to leave.
Mick Herron has another winner on his hands.

Historia
When a body is hauled from the River Tyne, Sarah Tucker heads to Newcastle for a closer look. She identifies the dead woman as Private Detective Zoë Boehm, but putting a name to the corpse only raises further questions. Did Zoë kill herself, or did one of her old cases come back to haunt her? Coincidence is an excuse that soon appears pretty unconvincing. Sarah can’t leave until she’s found the answers to her questions, however dangerous they might turn out to be.

Great narrator- awkward story
Revisado: 06-22-23
The protagonist is flat and two dimensional. The antagonist is barely a side character. What little plot exists is not worth the time it takes to listen to it. I wish I could get my money back for this book.

Historia
In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs - now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his La-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie - now he goes by Vern.

Really had me going!
Revisado: 01-28-23
The antagonist was every bit as well, drawn as the protagonist. They were suitably matched. Making for an even better story than you can imagine. Each of the characters in this book were worth their own story. You won't be sorry if you take the time to listen to this.

Historia
Daniel McEvoy has a problem. Well, really, he has several, but for this Irish ex-pat bouncer at a seedy, small-time casino, the fact that his girlfriend was just murdered in the parking lot is uppermost in his mind. That is until lots of people around him start dying, and not of natural causes. Suddenly, Daniel’s got half the New Jersey mob, dirty cops, and his man-crazy upstairs neighbor after him, and he still doesn't know what's going on.

Historia
Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk. Now one young woman has the chance to be a hero - if she can think quickly enough to stay alive.

What a terrible disappointment.
Revisado: 08-28-22
I don't know what I paid to listen to this, but however much it was much more than it was worth. I felt like I was being dragged through the mud. With the mud being full of stones. What a disappointment as I really enjoyed this author! Don't bother with this one.
