Never Ending Anguish
Revisado: 06-06-22
This is a review of the audible book. The book starts with a tragedy. I really tried to be sympathetic but it just went from one awful thing to the next. I have enjoyed Lisa Scottoline books in years past but this was a major disappointment. The narration was over the top emotionally. I’m not sure if that was due to the narrator or the writing or a combination of both. I also had trouble with the stupidity of both the family and the FBI. The family is in hiding because if found they will be killed. The FBI gives the family cell phones and computers and tell them to stay off social media. They don’t. The FBI have agents and camera around the place yet they don’t monitor the devices or put blocking software on the them.

Worse narration in 30 years of audio books
Revisado: 05-02-22
I've listened to over 600 audio books in 30 years and this is the worse narration ever. The narrator spoke very fast. There was no change in timbre for any of the characters. Because of the fast talk and no change in the timbre it was difficult to figure out which character was speaking. I gave up in frustration. The book might be OK to read but definitely pass on the audio version.

Hacker info excellent, accent difficult
Revisado: 06-19-18
I enjoyed hearing about the various techniques that hackers use. The story was very interesting. Both narrators were excellent but I had difficulty with the accents. It was especially difficult when switching from the female narrator to the male narrator. I'd probably read other books in the series but will not listen to them.

Not a novel 3 short stories
Revisado: 05-03-18
I should have read the details more closely. I wasn't expecting 3 short stories. It was only 5 hr 46 minutes. Some of that was padded with the author talking about how much he loved the character.

Narration impossible to hear because of music
Revisado: 04-27-18
Any additional comments?
After listening to almost 500 audio books this is the first one I've ever quit. The reason is the playing music over the narration making it almost impossible to hear the words being spoken. The music would come and go at random times. Just when you start to think perhaps there will be no more music it comes back. Carly is a musician and I like her music. If they were to include music perhaps a short piece between each chapter.

Historia
What if you found a way to send something back in time? But not weeks, days, or even minutes back. What if you could only send something back a fraction of a second? Would this be of any use? You wouldn't have nearly enough time to right a wrong, change an event, or win a lottery. Nathan Wexler is a brilliant physicist who thinks he's found a way to send matter a split second back into the past. But before he can even confirm his findings, he and his wife-to-be, Jenna Morrison, find themselves in a battle for their very lives.

Written like a Dick & Jane book
Revisado: 06-30-16
Would you try another book from Douglas E. Richards and/or Kevin Pariseau?
Let the characters show us how smart, wonderful, strong, clever, brave ... they are rather than having the other characters tell us. No, I would not try another book.
Would you ever listen to anything by Douglas E. Richards again?
No, I would not listen to another book by this author.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kevin Pariseau?
I think another narrator could have done better but he was dealing with some poor material.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I love time travel books and this had some interesting ideas but the execution left a lot to be desired. So, I was disappointed.

Tedious - my last John Corey
Revisado: 06-18-13
Would you try another book from Nelson DeMille and/or Scott Brick?
I've read all the John Corey books. I loved the character when first introduced in "Plum Island". After reading "The Lion" I was done with the character. However, 3 years later decided to give it an chance. This book was very long. The John Corey character tries too hard too often to be funny. Going off on tangents then recovering with "Anyway,..", "In any case, ...", etc. Plus we hear over and over "I'm going to kill the Panther", "Yemen sucks", etc. If you eliminate all this filler the book could have been at least 50% smaller. Scott Brick did a good job as usual.
Would you ever listen to anything by Nelson DeMille again?
As long as it isn't another John Corey book. Of course, the ending of this book makes it plain there is another John Corey book on the way.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Learned something about Yemen and the drones.

2nd worse audio book
Revisado: 02-10-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Unsure.
Has Eyes Wide Open turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Eyes Wide Open?
Everything after his trip to CA.
Any additional comments?
I've listened to many audio books. This is the 2nd worse (that honor belongs to "The Quickie" by
James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge). In almost all books you can relate to the protagonist even though you may not entirely agree with them. In this case, I never could related to the protagonist. He's suppose to be a brillant doctor and other than the protagonist in "The Quickie" he's probably the dumbest. Near the end of the book he states he's a doctor who considers all the evidence before making a decision--that's a lie, he does the opposite of the facts for the entire book. He has an obession that is impossible to understand. It has to do with his nephew which he didn't have a close or good relationship with. This obession extends to his brother and his sister-in-law that he never had a close connection. I personally felt no empathy for the nephew, brother or sister-in-law. I hardly ever give up on a book. In this case, at the half-way point I decided to give it up. However, I was listening to the book in the car and decided to download a new book when I got home. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a mystery that hooked me. Once that resolved itself I should have quit but at this point my see-it-to-the-end kicked in. But that was a mistake. The story became very predictable and it just kept dragging on. It seems like the epilogue is setting up a sequel.

Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); and what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow").

Historia
Acclaimed novelist Yu Hua became the first Chinese author to win the distinguished James Joyce Foundation Award. Controversial in his own country for his biting satire, he creates insightful portraits of Chinese society. Step-brothers Baldy Li and Song Gang couldn't be more different. While Baldy is a girl-chasing teen, Song is quiet and studious. The two come of age in a vibrant Chinese culture struggling with constant change.

Disappointed
Revisado: 10-07-11
I enjoy stories of different cultures. This book captures at the village level changes that have occurred in China over the past 50 years. The biggest disappointment is the story of the brothers. Neither brother was an appealing character. One is basically a jerk and the other is an idiot. Like another reviewer I was about to give up when the beginning of the book beats the toilet scene to death. The main reason I continued to read the book is that I'd burn the 27 CD's for a road trip. If I'd been at home listening on my iPod I'd given up.
