I really tried to get into this book, it was a chore. Some parts were very good and insightful. Book stretched out and was too long. This book was not particularly engaging or enjoyable. Hard to follow in many parts, the author's bridging was not well done. Learned from some parts about this time in our history. The characters were hard to like. Hate writing a review like this on something an author worked hard on writing, but there you have it.

There were parts of this book that were fantastic and parts that were slow, painful and exceptionally gruesome. All and all when I was done, I would say I was not a fan. This book screams for a sequel.

Ina's honesty and forthright nature makes her the compelling person she is. And, Ina is compelling! Her cleansing remarks about her family situation when she and her brother were young & living with their parents, had to be a relief. Ina always tried to show her true self to her fans, that's just one of the traits that makes her so likable.

At first I was concerned to see Ina decided to narrate her own book. Some nonprofessional narrators are just downright awful to try and listen to. But, NOT Ina! She performed a very professional sounding narration here. And, after listening to Be Ready When the Luck Happens I could understand why. Everything she does is first rate. I learned so much from her book.

Ina's foodie fans can ALWAYS be guaranteed that each and everyone of her recipes will come out perfectly! That's because of Ina's perfectionism and scientific approach to her food and her unrelentless testing of each recipe before it earns a place in her book I seldom give a book all five stars—but I did here—this one easily deserves it..

I needed a light read between the heavier topic-and-character-driven books I've been reading for my monthly book club.

This book fit the bill, with a nice, cute, light story. And, unlike another reviewer, I did enjoy the sex scenes.

Though, the main character was a bit of a diz-ball. You would have thought that an educated woman such as herself, would have immediately called the police when she heard the sound of shattering glass downstairs in her shop—waking her up one night—and then after peering-out of one of her upstairs windows—she saw a figure with a baseball bat standing outside. Additionally, to add insult to injury—no urgency there—she just covered her broken shop window up with a piece of cardboard, until she got around to having it fixed.

On another note, I immediately figured out what the scratching sound was.

Phoebe Stone feels like a lost, beaten down soul that has lost her footing. However, this all changes once she steps into Newport, Rhode Island's Cornwall Inn. Phoebe is the only guest at the Cornwall who isn't there for the bride's big wedding event. But, she has dreamed of coming for years with her husband. Now she's here without him—at rock bottom—and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. (Her suite alone goes for $800/night!) The bride has accounted for every detail—and possible disaster—the week might yield, EXCEPT for one, Phoebe!

Alison Espach's The Wedding People turns out to be a nuanced and resonant look at the winding path's that we take to places we never imagined. And, how chance encounters reroute us. It is absurdly funny and tender. A great read.

Charming & Witty Golden Age Mystery

This book takes place in 1927 with a very broke mystery writer, Marius Quin, at the center of it all. Marius, is invited by his childhood friend of many years, Lady Isabella Montague (Bella), to an intimate New Year's Eve party at Everham Hall, hosted by a narcissistic actor. The host is murdered, and, of course, everyone is snowed in. The police can't immediately come to investigate, so Marius and Bella try to solve the mystery together.

A cute story. I didn't fine Marius Quin too likeable at points. You get the feeling he is emotionally out of touch and a bit on the selfish side. Especially when Marius and Ellas split up in the mansion and separately circle around to try and find the killer. Ella goes on her route WITHOUT a weapon, and not having Marius by her side for protection. Before starting his route, Marius pulls a sword hanging off the wall decor to bring with him. And, he is joined by an employee who opens his door hearing sounds in the hallway, the employee is holding a candlestick. The employee joins Marius and the two men search together for the killer on Marius's route.

This is an enjoyable read. I did predict one thing at the end. (Not the killer.) And I do feel that the discovery of the killer was clever and very well executed on the author's part.

I had so much trouble listening to this book. It put me to sleep. The story was ridiculous and boring to follow. It laughs at the listener's intelligence. The ending was just idiotic. I am done with Sara Bourgeois and her series. Her stories have gone downhill. They are just dumb and show no imagination. The writing was abysmal. I rarely give a one star rating, but this book was so deserving. I wasted 2 hrs. and 55 minutes of my life listening to it, that I can't get back!

Brighton thinks like a teenager!

By her actions, you would never know Brighton is a woman of her early 20s. She thinks and acts like a teenager with an undeveloped brain. It's like there's a can of wiggly worms in her head controlling her decision-making.

When it comes to men, Brighton continues to make poor choices over and over again, she never seems to learn from her past experiences. So very Frustrating!

She is her worst enemy in life. An example, she was ask to meet some of the filmmaking crew in a deep, dark part of her basement. She decided not to wait a minute for Merri to use his litterbox, so Merri could accompany her into the basement, Brighton decides to go by herself. Just one of MANY poor choices on her part.

I think the author, Rebecca Mitchell, relies too much on Brighton's poor, unhinged decision-making, to get her into trouble, instead of being a more creative writer and coming up with more innovative ideas for Brighton's many challenges.

And, there was a part where two Merri the cats appeared. Brighton was sent out of the house for the real Merri to fix this. It was never explained how he did so, or why there were two of him. Listeners had to wonder if she was speaking to the real Merri when she returned into her house. Weird!

All in all these are cute stories with great potential that could be much better written! Hoping the author reads my review..

I was enjoying this light read series, but I feel it's gone way downhill, The main character, Brighton Longfield, a divorced woman, acts like a child. She;s never grown up or seems to learn any lessons her life has given to her. She is constantly making the wrong decisions and is her worst enemy because of it.. She creates a lot of her own problems. She is terrible with men. And her conversational style is extremely immature. I mentioned this in a previous review, most of a normal person's brain synapses connect in a straight line. Not Brightons! Her brain connections are more like a jar of squiggly worms.

It's almost like the author, Sara Bourgeois, is giving up on this Wicked Witches of Coventry series, Weird, unimaginative story lines. It's like the author is just throwing out stuff out there to see if it sticks. The more silly and chaotic, the better. Because of this, I sadly don't feel I will waste my time reading any of Sara's future series. I will, however, finish this series since the books are so short and I'm near the end. I hope I don't regret this decision and feel afterwards that, that's several hours of my life I'll never get back! I rarely write any bad reviews, but this series is ending up to be frustrating. The author could have done so much better!

A Protection Amulet Stolen!

I don't agree with Lynn's review, I've listened to many Audible books over the years and the reader, Rebecca Mitchell, does a nice job with this series.

A whirling of events in Coventry start when Brighton Longfield has her protection amulet stolen! However, in solving this mystery, Brighton comes across as being her worst enemy at times. For goodness sake for a divorced woman who was married before, you would think she would have more experience and exercise better judgment and not have such ridiculous thoughts. She thinks like a teenager who operates with an under-developed brain! Instead of her neurons connecting in a strath path, hers act more like worms squirming all over the place.

The listener does have to try to not let their exasperation exercised with Brighton's downright stupidity get in the way. Some interesting stuff goes on. That withstanding, it's a cute story, though, light and fun read.
