I also read it once. :-) This is an excellent story, really enjoyed it. Yeah the character is a little bit larger than life, but it's still a fun story. Don't get me wrong, I hope the future doesn't go that way. But if it does, I'm glad we have heroes to look forward to.

Well, it's a freebie read by an AI.
Revisado: 01-31-24
I guess you get what you pay for. The AI voice is not lilting and does not move into the background like human voices do. A different part of my brain has to interpret it, and it's distracting. I'm not really a fan.
The story was ok, your typical cozy mystery. I like those for easy listening while I work, but the buzzy tone of the robot reader was distracting and kept me from focusing on my work.

Started out interesting, but got sappy and preachy
Revisado: 01-23-24
I liked this story at first, but it got sappy at the end. I think the author lost direction with what she was trying to say, at least that's how it felt.
Rich kid sent to a school to be educated side by side with a bunch of androids. He gets very attached to one in particular, and goes looking for her when she disappears. Halfway through author introduces new characters that have these important parts that came out of nowhere. It made me groan. Story also went sideways as well. It's a meh.

Unexpected, funny, enjoyable story
Revisado: 01-19-24
I really enjoyed this story. It was funny, unexpected, and excellent at calling out foolish politics. Our heroine decides she wants to be a bounty hunter and ends up trapped in a castle with a murderer on the loose. Once that happens she decides to become a detective. Goofy mayhem ensues while the heroine tries to figure out the many loose threads of what's going on while trying to figure out who the culprit is.
I loved the story, got completely into it, and plan to look up the author's other books.

Historia
Eva Kavinsky wakes in a dark cellar, with no memory of how she got here. Imprisoned with her, seemingly at random, are four men. The only way out is the trapdoor in the ceiling – and it's locked. The single clue about what brings them all here is a cryptic message sprayed onto one wall. Connect the dots. Repent. A camera fixed high above reach is livestreaming this whole nightmare to the world. What confessions are they meant to make to their unseen audience?

I hate a sad ending
Revisado: 11-07-23
The story had lots of twists and did keep me engaged and listening, but I hated how it ended, it was as if the author dangled hope before us only to dash it at the last second. Blah. So much for new beginnings.

England, 1920. Eleanor Swift has spent the last few years travelling the world: taking tea in China, tasting alligators in Peru, escaping bandits in Persia and she has just arrived in England after a chaotic 45-day flight from South Africa. Chipstone is about the sleepiest town you could have the misfortune to meet. But then, from the edge of a quarry, through the driving rain, Eleanor is shocked to see a man shot and killed in the distance. Before she can climb down to the spot, the villain is gone and the body has vanished.

Main character is a dolt
Revisado: 08-14-23
Sorry, but the main character is an idiot who makes so many foolish choices it's embarrassing. She tells people what she's thinking, charges ahead, and gets herself into situations that are eye-rolling. Is the author trying to tell a story about a lady with liberated perspectives, because to me she's just over-confident and oblivious.

Rated R for profanity - I regret this selection
Revisado: 07-12-23
It felt like the author was pandering, almost as if the author said I am going to write a story with xyz people instead of saying I want to tell this story and xyz characters should be in it. It just seemed backwards and upside down with character selection and development.
I also found the main character to be whiney and not very bright. There was so much swearing in the story I found it distracting and off-putting. It's really not a sci-fi, it's just a drama with an outer space setting. There's a difference!
Also, the reader/narrator was whiney and made the experience worse. I would not recommend and plan to avoid this author in the future.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Sweet story
Revisado: 05-19-23
I am a more scifi mystery genre person, but I enjoyed this book. This story was a wee bit predictable and sappy but it was still interesting and kept me involved in the tale.
It is original in that it tells the tale from the perspective of the octopus and how he tries to communicate with one human he has developed a fondness for. In this relationship, he discovers a family secret that he decides he needs to tell his friend about before he dies. The story teller draws you in and encourages you to feel for the octopus and his friend and root for the happy ending.
Spoiler alert - Yes it ends happy.

Mixed feelings with this series...
Revisado: 03-31-23
I'm kind of annoyed I can't review these books individually, makes sense that I should be able to. Anyways, I like the stories sort of, but the main character is kind of stupid and gullible. She's also doing that flirty dance that people do when they can't express their feelings. It kind of comes across as emotionally constipated. I'm about halfway through book two, and I'm not sure I will finish the series. It got annoying to me. I might return later and will update my review if I finish the series and it convinces me to like it more.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Another mixed feelings storyline
Revisado: 01-12-23
Okay, so this book is dystopian, which means it is going to have sad elements. The protagonist mentions several times that everyone is dead, everyone is here just to die, and frankly it detracts from the adventure aspect of the story. But he's right, everyone is just there to die, and they are dying pretty quickly, so eh, it's part of storyline. I tend to get very involved in a story, so this is likely just a 'me' thing.
That being said, the story is very well written, everyday average schlub figures out how to become a butt-kicking adventurer. That's pretty much what everyone dreams of doing, right? Lots of laughs, cool story weaved into traditional RPG elements. Having a kitty cat sidekick is a neat addition to the story. It brings a lot of fun aspects into how the character's stats change and grow. Plus, the cat is a real butt kicker! Love it!!!
It was a fun ride for the most part. I plan to listen to the next book.
