Historia
It was supposed to be a few relaxing days in the mountains for Nash Jaramillo and his Viet Nam Army buddies, target shooting and drinking beer. Then they discovered that the New Mexico valley where Nash had his cabin had been taken over by international terrorists with an explosive agenda. Cut off from the outside world, the old soldiers had no choice but to take on an enemy force that outnumbered them five to one. Over fifty years ago in Viet Nam these four men had fought for their country and survived, and now they were determined to do it again. You must read this exciting and action-...

Not bad, but not great.
Revisado: 04-21-25
I had heard from a friend that this was a good book, and mostly I agree. The plot is absolutely full of holes,
SPOILER ALERT
including why the team didn’t just call the authorities when they first discovered Sue. I kept asking myself that question throughout the entire book. It was totally unbelievable because of that one point.
Additionally, how is it they got away with it considering modern investigative techniques that are currently being employed at the time of writing.
Also, this was computer narrated and while it wasn’t bad, actually quite good, except when the auto-narrator referred to a .45 handgun as a “point four five” gum. That’s when I realized it wasn’t a real human narrating the book. Still though, it was hardly noticeable.
Overall not bad and I don’t feel ripped off or in need to demand a refund. It was a nice weekend diversion and a good story, even if not even remotely believable. I think Mr. Allin would be a good author if he had a professional editor to help him out with details noted above.

Wonderful love story
Revisado: 12-24-24
This is a wonderful love story that started in one of the world’s most dreadful periods. It tells the story about many remarkable people, especially Lally and his Gita, as well as others who shared their dark time together.
The narrator is great and I enjoyed every second of this remarkable book.
I can recommend this book to anyone who asks.

Revisado: 09-17-24
I greatly enjoy the book that King wrote, however, it was the VERY talented reader Frances Sternhagen who brought the story to life.
I count Ms. Sternhagen wonderful rendition on Deloris Claiborne among the very finest audiobooks I’ve ever (literally) had the pleasure of listening to.
I consider her to be the equal of Scott Brick and Grover Gardner performance of The Stand, also a King book, owing to her rendition of the hard edged Mrs. Claiborne and her Maine accent was SPOT ON! Wow!
Now I have to listen to her other work.
King was great, but Frances was better.
I can’t recommend this listen any higher!

Anybody can get lucky. Nobody controls the odds like Billy Walters. Widely regarded as “the Michael Jordan of sports betting,” Walters is a living legend in Las Vegas and among sports bettors worldwide. With an unmatched winning streak of thirty-six consecutive years, Walters has become fabulously wealthy by placing hundreds of millions of dollars a year in gross wagers, including one Super Bowl bet of $3.5 million alone. Competitors desperate to crack his betting techniques have tried hacking his phones, cloning his beepers, rifling through his trash, and bribing his employees.

Great story read by the Author
Revisado: 07-09-24
I’d never heard of Billy Waters before but after hearing an interview with him on the radio i immediately bought this great book and haven’t been able to put it down.
It’s one of the few books read by the author whose narration is as great as the content of the story.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone who asked me about it. Great job Billy!

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Great but the reader…
Revisado: 04-14-24
So like many others leaving reviews, I was literally horrified about how quickly this scenario can happen. Having read Hiroshima in the early 1970’s, I understood the basics of what to expect, both from the bombing itself to the physiology of what happens to people afterwards. My mother made me read that book in the 1970’s.
What absolutely fascinated me is all the political and military research that was put into this fine book. It was very detailed and it’s one of the few books I needs to do a second listen to. I did fact checking all through the first listen, now a second one to really absorb everything.
One thing about this scenario…wouldn’t the Russians have known about the first launch from North Korea and using their own technology figure out that the US Counter Attack was headed to North Korea, and not Russia? It seems like a hole in the scenario, but overall a marvelous book.
Ok, about the reader…I got VERY tired of listening to her early on in the book. Her very bad habit of accentuating “millions”, and “billions”, and every word spoken after them got VERY old. I understand the use of accentuation language to make a point and build suspense, but she went way overboard and kinda spoiled the listen a bit. Now don’t get me wrong, I listened to every word, but I think another reader might make the presentation much better. And to be clear, I’m not saying she’s terrible, just that she might not have gotten good direction from the director/producer of the audiobook.
Otherwise, a marvelous read!

Continuity Karen Here
Revisado: 01-05-24
WONDERFUL BOOK, but couldn’t help but notice Clive got a small detail wrong. He refers to the bathroom on a naval vessel as “the John”. Now I KNOW I’m being a Karen here, but the John is always called the “head on any US Naval vessel.
I had to laugh a little about that.
Doesn’t take away from his great book, just something an old sailor noticed.
I’d recommend it to anyone who asked. :)

The stuff I didn’t know…
Revisado: 11-03-23
I haven’t followed Musk like others have but of course you hear so much about him. This is a wonderful book that shows what a genius he is, considering his MANY really wonderful accomplishments.
Like all men, he has his flaws, but unlike most, he is aware of them and yet he perseveres and continues on anyway. I’d love to live long enough to see how his story ends and what he accomplishes in the end.
Unlike the other books I’ve read by Isaacson, this book is only a mid-life check-in. I don’t expect he will finish Musks story, but I bet someone will be able to do so in the future.
Can’t wait to read Volume 2.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who asked me. Great story in very readable (listenable) format.
The READER distinguishes himself by my not knowing he’s there, and delivered a wonderful reading of the book. Well done Isaacson and Bobb!

Unexpected…
Revisado: 10-09-23
I bought this recording after seeing the movie Nefarious, thinking it was the source of the movie. It’s NOT the source of the book. Not even close.
Nonetheless, it’s a reasonably entertaining book, and I believe it does accurately portray spiritual truths, however, the narration is as horrid as the main character of this book.
As a result, I couldn’t finish the book, and I will certainly return it after I finish writing this review.
I think this audio book would be much improved by re-recorded the entire book.
That’s NOT to say the narrator is a bad one, I suspect he’s very good, however the producer of the book gave poor direction on how he should narrate the book.
Listen to the 5 minute preview before buying the recording and make sure you can stand 7.5 hours of it.

Good story, but that narrator…
Revisado: 09-04-23
I’ve listened to all the books in this series, and thought they were all great, but the narration of this one was so poorly done I wanted to skip foreword on multiple occasions.
In particular, the narrators performance when portraying the evil general was painful to listen to. Totally off base. I cannot understand why the producers of the audio version would allow it, but decisions like that usually come down to $$$.
If another books comes out with the same reader I will certainly take a pass on it. I broke my own rule of reading the reviews before I bought the book, though honestly, I’d have probably bought the book anyway, even knowing of the marginal performance from the narrator.
All that said, I really enjoyed the story line, and look forward to his next book, should Forstchen decide to have another go at it. I’d love to see him pull together another book that ends well for the United States, maybe with John becoming president, but it’s his series. 😊
