Unrealistic melodrama
Revisado: 05-04-25
Exaggerated unnecessary drama to drag out the story. Tedious at times. I guess that is what is to be expected with "women's fiction."

Story held your interest. Unexpected twists & ending.

Did not like the constant back and forth from one decade to the next and back again. I found it hard to follow and keep the story and characters straight in my mind. But the story line was good, so I continued to the end. Would still recommend.

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

I felt that the volume of content could easily have been divided into two separate books, although I wouldn't eliminate any of it. Having lived through that era, this book resurrected many memories which were accurately recounted.

Effectively keeps you guessing wrong
Revisado: 02-22-24
Looking back, I almost stopped reading by end of the first chapter. The story seemed to drag along so slowly at the beginning that I was tempted to skip ahead to see if it got better. I am glad that I stuck with it though. The suspense and unanswered questions finally grab you and the ending makes you feel that justice was served and the good guys came out on top...even made you think that a small town in Kansas might be a good place to live.

Historia
Was marrying a man she barely knew really the most practical choice? Abby Taylor’s life was precariously balanced between raising her orphaned niece and nephew, trying to keep the rickety old house from falling down around their ears and keeping her go-nowhere job to pay the bills. She wasn’t looking for romance, let alone marriage. John Lonigan had spent most of his life on the move. He had no plans to settle in one place, to put down roots. And then he met Abby and her little family and found himself playing catch and mending dolls, not to mention fixing windows and building fences. ...

Historia
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.
