Thorough review of horrific events
Revisado: 10-03-24
Black Saturday is comprehensive, at times a bit confusing, and in the end only marred by the author's own narration. Although the included clips on his reportage on Fox News are clear and well-delivered, the actual narration of the book is all too often rushed, almost breathless. Perhaps he was trying to impart the horror, but the result was a staccato performance which detracted hugely from the narrative.

Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

I couldn't bear the narrator
Revisado: 07-30-24
VERY slow and deliberate narration....not for me, unless I actually up the speed considerably. There are narrators who perform and narrators who merely read. This one reads.

Historia
Recently divorced and reluctantly retired, Julia Bird has fled London to enjoy idyllic rural life in the Cotswolds. Determined to have the perfect English garden, her first job is to tear down the old shed, where she unearths much more than she’d bargained for: a body, apparently buried for decades. But who could it be, and who killed them? The police draw a blank, and even the gossip-fest that is the local book club can’t remember anyone going missing in the village.

Pretty inane

SO...I was ready for something cosy, but found this title rather too predictable in its "cosiness." Harmless, really, but probably for me not worth the credit.

Historia
Alexander Larman completes his acclaimed Windsor family trilogy, using rare and previously unseen documents to illuminate their unique family dynamic. Through his chronicling of events like the Royal Wedding, George VI’s death and the discovery of the Duke of Windsor’s treacherous activities in WWII, Larman paints a vivid portrait of the end of one sovereign’s reign and the beginning of another’s that heralded a new Elizabethan Age which would bring power and glory back to a monarchy desperately in need of it.

Historia
The year is 1929. As the world teeters on the brink of a global recession, Bletchley Park plays host to a rather special event. MI5 is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and a select band of former and current employees are gathering for a weekend of music, dance, and heavy drinking. Among them is Sir Hilary Manningham Butler, a middle-aged woman whose entire adult life has been spent masquerading as a man. She doesn't know why she has been invited, but it is clear she is not the only one with things to hide.

Hmmm....strains my credulity
Revisado: 04-18-24
While I do not object to a little fanciful twist or two in the plot, this one absolutely strained my credulity past the breaking point. If this is the first book in a series, I'm afraid I won't be reading the next entries.

GREAT fun for history and trvia buffs
Revisado: 03-29-23
The entire Rabbit Hole Detective series represents a pleasant diversion from heavy-duty work, books, history tomes....well, ANYTHING. Each episode runs to about one hour, and each of the three presenters takes an indepth look at some facet of history or daily life. There is terrific humor....my only qualm is occasionally the British accent comes so fast and furiously that it is a bit hard to follow. I cannot wait for each week's new podcast. AND, the Rabbit Hole detectives want suggestions for future dives down rabbit holes. How about a searching, searing look at the martini? Or maybe, for a historical "Can you believe this?", a discussion of Mitsuo Fuchida? Talk about history's strange turns...just look at Mr. Fuchida.

A Delightful, Insightful Political Memoir
Revisado: 04-20-21
John Boehner's On the House is a delightful political memoir. Although that phrase may sound like an oxymoron, Boehner's style can present even the most complex, confounding problems he faced in an easy listening manner. His own voice narrating does the book justice in that this former Speaker of the House knows exactly when to stress certain messages. He tells it all, including hardfought battles won and lost...without bitterness.
A fantastic political read. No matter if you are red or blue....don't miss this book.

Land - whether meadow or mountainside, desert or peat bog, parkland or pasture, suburb or city - is central to our existence. It quite literally underlies and underpins everything. Employing the keen intellect, insatiable curiosity, and narrative verve that are the foundations of his previous bestselling works, Simon Winchester examines what we human beings are doing - and have done - with the billions of acres that together make up the solid surface of our planet.

Fascinating book .... with one large disappointmen
Revisado: 02-07-21
I am a Simon Winchester fan of many years' standing. I found Land, his recent far-reaching look at land ownership and import, from ancient times until now, to be excellently researched and presented with Winchester's usual flair. However, I was hugely disappointed in his discussion of the Wilkes brothers of Idaho. Mr. Winchester's attribution of so much of their stance to their Evangelical beliefs was truly below his standards. Please note: I am NOT Evangelical at all....just someone who remembers her mother's counsel to never berate another's religion. I think the actions of the Wilkes duo could have been presented very clearly without the snarky remarks about Evangelicals. I daresay this would NOT have happened had the brothers been Jewish, or Catholic, or Muslim. VERY disappointing to see a brilliant writer take out after someone else's religion. He should have known my mother.
