Historia
Silent parachutes dotting the night sky—that's how one Normandy woman learned that the D-Day invasion was under way in June of 1944. Though they yearned for liberation, the French had to steel themselves for war. With D-Day Through French Eyes, Mary Louise Roberts turns the conventional narrative of D-Day on its head, taking listeners across the Channel to view the invasion anew. Roberts builds her history from an impressive range of gripping first-person accounts by French citizens throughout the region.

The sensitivity to cultural differences
Revisado: 07-27-24
Sometimes, the author's writing is not as evocative as the various source material. The story gently loves the various personalities who share their wartime experiences. I learned a lot more than military history. I learned of the devastation of the countryside by Allied bombs caused great hardship, yet the French seemed to believe that was the price of freedom

Historia
First came parents with the good sense to flee Europe in 1940 and the good fortune to reach the land of freedom. Their daughter, Ruth, grew up in the shadow of genocide - but in tandem with the birth of Israel, which remained her lodestar. She learned that although Jewishness is biologically transmitted, democracy is not, and both require intensive, intelligent transmission through education in each and every generation.

Truth
Revisado: 12-25-23
Rarely have I devoured a book as voraciously as I have this one. I generally read fiction, but this memoir of the development of the progressive movement, in its worst iterations, is outstanding. Wisse traces the anti-semitism that grows in the universities and colleges with the failure of the institutions to stand up to the inability to educate the students rigorously. Political correctness has become a substitute for free ideas and free speech.

Why do Israelis have among the world’s highest life expectancies and lowest rates of “deaths of despair” from suicide and substance abuse? Why is Israel’s population young and growing while all other wealthy democracies are aging and shrinking? How can it be that Israel, according to a United Nations ranking, is the fourth happiest nation in the world? Why do Israelis tend to look to the future with hope, optimism, and purpose while the rest of the West struggles with an epidemic of loneliness, teen depression, and social decline?

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

This is a well written, well read book which is comprehensible by a non-scientific mind. I learned a great deal about history, science and culture. I don’t often listen to fiction, but all 37 + hours of this are worthwhile.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Nightmare in Chernobyl
Revisado: 11-15-20
This is an amazing retelling of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It focuses on the malfeasance, stupidity and outright incompetent response of the Soviet Union to the meltdown of a nuclear reactor. The Communist party was unaware of the possibility of failure and unwilling to acknowledge it.
The book is well researched and complicated science is told clearly enough for anyone to under stand . The reader is perfect.
I couldn't stop listening , from beginning to end. The characters who inhabit the tale are well drawn and believable. Don't miss out on this book. It is a ten star listen .
