Historia
The Age of Chivalry, Thomas Bulfinch's masterpiece of history and fable, recounts the tales of Arthur and the Round Table. A timeless tale retold by Milton, Dryden, Tennyson, and writers before and since, the Arthurian legend has metamorphosed from medieval Welsh texts to the French vernacular romances of Chrétien de Troyes; from obscure histories of a British chieftain of the fifth or sixth century, to a chronicle of the advent of Christendom in the British Isles.

Well read. Loved the annotations included.
Revisado: 12-17-24
I gather that if one were not already somewhat familiar with the various characters, authors, and country's involved in the stories of King Arthur, this could be a bit confusing on first listen.
This does not speak of Disney stories, but any who have read 19th century poetry would likely recognize a few names mentioned. Fortunately, many works referenced here, are much easier for the layperson to access now than they were when this was originally written.
If you are brand new to the stories of King Arthur, this might not be the very first book you want; but if you find yourself intrigued thereafter, this is one you would likely find interesting soon after.
A note on the narrator: Good pronunciation so far as i can tell (I am not a Welsh speaker though). Nice production values, no annoying tics, and consistent volume. Easy to listen to, i am well pleased.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Very Entertaining and enjoyable
Revisado: 11-28-24
It was a well crafted story, with no forced tropes or unnecessary extended pages (hours) of dialogue.
The story was refreshing, humorous, and unusual.
The narration was spot on.
I greatly enjoyed this and would love to see other "weeks in the life of.." stories from this same universe and author (or maybe I just need to go find them).
Geared for adults, or at least those early 20's+ mostly.

Not a pretty story, but honest about cruelty, love, and hope.
Revisado: 08-26-24
It isn't an easy listen at times. Nothing explicit, but shows the terrible cruelty of people. There is much loss.
Somehow though, humanity does survive. As does love.
I will listen to the next books in the series, in a bit.

Four months ago, Lena woke up in a dark alleyway with no recollection of who she is. The only clues to her past are a mysterious tattooed symbol and a supernatural power: the ability to see evil in people. While struggling to regain her memory, she follows a guiding instinct to a small Colorado town. There she finds other young men and women with similar stories, similar tattoos, and a multitude of superhuman powers. Among them a man she's intensely attracted to, yet with no memories of him, she has no idea why.

Plot might be interesting, but far too much frustrated sexual angst
Revisado: 08-10-24
The plot could have been interesting, but for every 1 sentence of plot, theres 5 sentences of attempted soft prn.
I usually enjoy the young adult novels, even some middle school age novels, when the stories are well done. And the young romance doesn't bother me in a good story, it's part of life.
But i couldn't get to the story in this one due to the attempted slow burn romance that was just too annoying.
Sad.

Great Lighthearted view of history
Revisado: 12-26-23
This was great to listen to as i was doing other things.
I'd find myself laughing, and at times would hear myself thinking "ohhhh, that's not going to turn out well...", during some characters escapade.
This wasn't a dry list of dates and names, this is stories of real people making (humorous) real mistakes.

ChatGPT wrote a romance w/ elves
Revisado: 04-18-23
Every single plot that I’ve heard of for romance books was mentioned at least once, some out of apparent nothingness in the middle of an otherwise somewhat normal sounding sentence. Many were thrown about multiple times with no support for the plot device at all.
Nothing really tied together, I mean, it kinda sorta did… in that general progression towards kissing and so on that romances have.
Lots and lots of angst. Guilt. Hate. More angst.

Loved the idea, but treacly & poor writing
Revisado: 03-27-22
I fell in love with this plot but I cannot get through this story. It is written very poorly, it is very trite, and uses very short jumpy sentences. Also, the narrator sounds like an upgraded computer machine voice, not a live person; if a machine voice can sound whiny.
Unfortunate.

Lots of words that say nothing at all
Revisado: 10-31-21
In the two chapters I listened, the same sentence was said repeatedly with slight variations. (It read like a middle school age child filling up space for a report due the next morning for which absolutely no preparation had been made.) The content of that sentence was all about what was coming in the book, how great the book was, and how great the idea of the book was. But not once was there any substance of the actual study or the results.
I could have tried to sit through who knows how many more chapters of self aggrandizement by the author in the hope of finding something useful by the end, but cheezy (yes, with a “Z”) late night sales tactics annoy me.
Useless cheezy self aggrandizing annoying book. Ick.

Wow! New concepts, great world building, amazing narrator!
Revisado: 04-02-21
This isn’t a story line I’ve heard done over and over, it was a completely different concept. The closest I’ve ever come across for the melding of thoughts and needs concept is with Theodore Sturgeons ‘The Dreaming Jewels’, but whereas Sturgeon’s book is dark, this one is lighter. It stills deals with difficult themes, abandonment, neglect, poverty, inequity, but also includes how the characters ultimately react to these issues as they grow and mature.
I also greatly enjoyed the influence of African song, and drums. How these became characters themselves, and created depth to the flow of conversations.
I loved the narrator! Beautiful voice and really gave body to the main character. She was great with all the characters, but I felt that I could almost see the main character standing in front of me.
This is apparently the first book of a series, it’s not a great traumatic cliffhanger that will have you terribly upset at the end, but it is enough that you do want to see what comes next.

Timeless fantasy for a new generation
Revisado: 03-05-21
I’ve listened and relistened to this book for years now.
The story has everything good fantasy should and none of the horrid preaching or political lessons that many fantasy novels contain. It is enough to have youth, love, death, discovery, redemption, trust, faith, and yes, battles between the inexperienced good and the flawed evil.
The narrator is fantastic and he is my favorite narrator but for Stephen Fry (of the British Harry Potter audiobooks fame among many others).
This is only the 1st volume of the 4 volume set, but while there is a definite “this is the plan for the next book” in the last chapter, it is not what I’d call a cliffhanger. No one is left dying or in serious danger that could lead to death. Yes, there are many questions that would be nice to know more about, just because those questions are so interesting, but again, nothing bad is set up to happen to those questions while we’re not watching. Enough to make me interested in the next book but not so much that I would get annoyed at the incompleteness. So, nice.
