Interesting concept, poor delivery

The concept of the book is interesting, but for a story about women creating their own language we see surprisingly little of them. Instead, the story bounces around between a host of awful men. The men are ALL terrible. Usually, there are at least a few members of an oppressing class who see and disagree with what's going on and and take steps to be an ally to the oppressed group. Not so with this book. The writing created a characature of terrible men that was so over the top it was laughable which made the story difficult to relate to.

In addition to the unbelievable males in this book, the story doesn't focus in on any one character so it you aren't given the chance to form an emotional connection with any of them. You're not rooting for the women because you feel indifferent towards every character.

Overall good concept, but poorly executed.

This was terrible! I DNFed about 20% of the way through. The writing sounds like something a high schooler that got a B in creative writing class would produce. Too many alliterations! The author is attempting to be prosaic, but failing miserably. I'm wondering if this book had an editor at all.

The characters are the same tired tropes we've seen a million times: angry female assassin who doesn't get close to people, and some dude who's grumpy for another reason I already forgot. I need new characters, not the same old ones everyone has been copying since Throne of Glass.

Good story, but a bit annoying at times

The story was good, but nothing special. One of my biggest pet peeves with YA books is the main character's inability to see the obvious. The MMC clearly loves the FMC, but she keeps wondering things like, "Were his feelings for me ever real?" YES! He obviously loves you, you idiot!!! More annoying, the climax of the story was caused entirely by her inability to see that he obviously loves her!!! I hate it so much! For once, it would be nice to have a story where the FMC isn't contatantly looking for reasons to hate the MMC when he clearly cares 🤦‍♀️. The writing was also very repetitive. Every other word is "indeed." There are other affirmative expressions to choose from than "indeed."

The narrator was pleasant, but I don't think her voice was right for this story. She sounded too mature to accurately capture the FMC's personality.

After all that, I'm still going to read the entire series, but I'll opt for the hard copy over the audiobook.

The story seems pretty interesting, but I'm tapping out 1/4 of the way through. The narrator has a pleasant voice, but the way she's reading the main character makes the character annoying and ubrelatable. The accents for other characters are also really bad and completely take me out of the story. I'll have to find the time to sit and properly read the book to finish the story.

Children are children

This book makes some good points, but it suggests the typical way of parenting (behavior modification through reward and punishment) is going to damage your children and make them out of control teens. If that were true, all teens would be out of control, but most aren't. Out of control teens are the exception, not the rule.

The author also says that rewards and punishments will lead of out of control teens because the teen will eventually be too big to physically put in time out. That may be true, but you know what isn't too big to put in time out? Car keys, money, and the wifi password! Things teens actually care about and will respond to being taken away. No physical time out required.

The author also doesn't tell you what to do if the empathetic "I hear you, you're feeling..." approach doesn't work. She states that validating big feelings will help kids calm down. Sometimes when my daughter is experiencing big feelings and I try to validate her, she treats it as an invitation to escalate the tantrum, not calm down. So, now what?

She also takes the approach of "if you wouldn't like your partner treating you like that, don't treat kids like that" when parents react to tantrums. Children are children! The reason why I wouldn't like my partner responding to my emotions that way is because I'm an adult and don't appreciate being treated like a child. Children are not adults, it's ok to treat them like children.

Stephen King is obsessed with boobs

For a book that only has one female character, it sure talks a lot about breasts. Stephen King is a great story teller, but the way he writes female characters makes me wonder if he's ever actually met a woman in real life.

I'm not done with this one yet, but I can't wait to rave about the narrator. He is amazing! It feels like I'm listening to the character telling me the story like he's sitting in front of me. Ray Porter really brings Dr. Grace's personality to life! The story is really good too. All around fantastic!

Update: I love this book! Especially Rocky! I bought a hard copy so I could sit down and read it when I have some time.

It's a great story! I was engaged throughout the entire thing. It's just far enough from reality that you don't wonder if any of the science is consistent. That makes it very easy to just sit back and enjoy.

It's like a TV show that starts off good enough that you're invested, then goes down hill fast, but you can't stop watching because the beginning was so good. This book could have omitted half of the characters without affecting the substance of the story at all. It could easily have been half as long. I skipped several chapters to get to the end and still didn't have trouble understanding what was happening.
