Historia
In an industry where celebrity chefs are known as much for their salty talk and quick tempers as their food, Eric Ripert stands out. The winner of four James Beard Awards, co-owner and chef of a world-renowned restaurant, and recipient of countless Michelin stars, Ripert embodies elegance and culinary perfection. But before the accolades, before he even knew how to make a proper hollandaise sauce, Eric Ripert was a lonely young boy in the south of France whose life was falling apart.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Historia
This short, opinionated audiobook addresses the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which argues that the language we speak shapes the way we perceive the world. Linguist John McWhorter argues that while this idea is mesmerizing, it is plainly wrong. It is language that reflects culture and worldview, not the other way around.

Just listen to his Great Courses titles
Revisado: 07-01-23
He goes over a lot of this stuff in his Great Courses lectures "The Story of Human Language" and "Language Families of the World". His narration there is a lot more free flowing and easier to listen to. Here he sounds like he's just reading his PHD master thesis out loud, which is not very engaging.

The American supermarket is an everyday miracle. But what does it take to run one? What are the inner workings of product delivery and distribution? Who sets the price? And who suffers for the convenience and efficiency we’ve come to expect? In this rollicking exposé, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on this highly secretive industry.

Not every author is a narrator
Revisado: 07-01-23
I made it about two hours in before the author's voice drove me away. He doesn't have the energy, pacing, and consistency to be narrating a book. I'd probably just get the physical book if I wanted to continue this.

Since 1982, millions of Rohingya have had to flee their homes as a result of extreme prejudice and persecution. Here, for the first time, a Rohingya speaks up to expose the truth behind this global humanitarian crisis. Through the eyes of a child, we learn about the historic persecution of the Rohingya people and witness the violence Habiburahman endured.

Good supplementary material for learning Japanese
Revisado: 12-23-22
This is a good supplement to a more structured teaching methodology, like Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone. You should have a good grasp of Hiragana, Katakana and some basic kanji before using it so that you can read the transcript. I started using it when I was in the fourth of five Pimsleur courses.
Positives:
+ The transcript includes furigana, which is helpful for reading kanji.
+ Covers a lot of topics so you'll learn a lot of vocabulary and grammar concepts.
Negatives:
- The Japanese audio quality doesn't seem to be as good as the English audio quality.
- They only use two speakers. When learning it's important to listen to as many different speakers as possible because everybody has slightly varied pronunciation.

Historia
Kimi’s Obaachan, her grandmother, had always been a silent presence throughout her youth. Sipping tea by the fire, preparing sushi for the family, or indulgently listening to Ojichan’s (grandfather’s) stories for the thousandth time, Obaachan was a missing link to Kimi’s Japanese heritage, something she had had a mixed relationship with all her life. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, all Kimi ever wanted to do was fit in, spurning traditional Japanese cuisine and her grandfather’s attempts to teach her the language.

Can't believe this happened in America
Revisado: 12-23-22
Listened for free via the Audible Plus catalog but would have been worth a credit in the end. Hard to believe that internment happened in this country. Hopefully it never happens again. Also, wasn't expecting to hear the line "...when Three 6 Mafia started performing 'It's hard out there for a pimp'" in this book.

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Revisado: 12-23-22
Listened to it for free since it was in the Audible Plus catalog at the time. Would have been satisfied if I had paid for it. I primarily wanted to listen because I'm studying Japanese. I plan on eventually listening to the original Japanese version, which Audible also has.

Historia
The daughter of a Buddhist priest, Tsuneno was born in a rural Japanese village and was expected to live a traditional life much like her mother’s. But after three divorces - and a temperament much too strong-willed for her family’s approval - she ran away to make a life for herself in one of the largest cities in the world: Edo, a bustling metropolis at its peak. With Tsuneno as our guide, we experience the drama and excitement of Edo just prior to the arrival of American Commodore Perry’s fleet, which transformed Japan.

Too much filler
Revisado: 07-08-22
It seems like there wasn't a lot of source material for the author to use in writing this book. In order to make up for that she spends a lot of time filling in the world around the main character. Listen to this book if you want an idea of what life in Japan was like during the protagonist's era -- not for a gripping narrative.
