Realistic
Revisado: 12-26-24
As a retired doc who who worked with patients with similar issues, this story hit home with its realistic characters and dialogue. The author either has personal experience or amazing insight into issues and attitudes of parents, medical professionals, caregivers and public surrounding lives of children with severe developmental disorders. It is truly a service to these families to write this realistic and compelling story to bring attention to the complex lives of the families of those children in the complicated wheelchairs/strollers that folks seem to think it’s okay to stare at with distaste when they see them in stores. They are real kids with real families who love them intensely. This left me in tears for Alex and his mom because I felt like I’ve known them before.

Story ok but didn’t pick the best reader.
Revisado: 05-18-24
There were some pretty obvious plot inaccuracies but tolerable and ignorable (might be too picky since I’m in medical field). Biggest issue was that the reader was just not the voice of surgeon or more so that she seemed to almost “sing song” through first person parts of protagonist that needed more serious/logical tone that a surgeon would likely take. Then again, this surgeon seemed to make a bunch of erratic decisions so maybe a reader who sounds really young captures her better? See what you think.

It’s him. Tom. I helped put his mom in prison for life. She killed his father. I recognize the sharp nose and flare to the nostrils. His thick eyebrows and defined cheekbones. But mostly it’s the eyes. Sea green.

Too many holes in plot
Revisado: 03-14-24
Story line compelling so wanted to finish but there were glaring holes in plot that made it cringe worthy. Editor should have caught them.

Science sadly off target
Revisado: 01-05-24
I’m a geneticist so pretty picky but I almost couldn’t finish this because the science was so inaccurate. Given that plot revolves around DNA, Genetics, Evolution and viruses, the author would have benefited from an edit by a scientist who knew the topic. I’m not going to specify because that would generate spoilers but many of the “genetic clues” are impossible while based on real entities that the author may not have completely understood. I like the characters and overall the storyline flows although I think it just sort of “ended”.

Stuart Neville can tell a story
Revisado: 12-27-23
Neville’s books are some of my favorites. He writes well - perfect dialog, believable characters who act true to form, and his text is gorgeous - outstanding in this genre. I could listen to Gerard Doyle anytime. I wish he would narrate everything I read! He captures Neville’s characters perfectly and somehow when he’s reading dialog from women, I forget he’s not one and it’s not because he puts on a strange falsetto voice. He’s just that good. I recommend this series overall. I’ve enjoyed following the story and always want to know what comes next for the people involved.

Too long
Revisado: 11-27-23
Story line dragged. I felt like it could have been told in about half the words. The iterative component was part of story line but didn’t always give you different perspective, just a repeat.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Atonement, Nutshell is a classic story of murder and deceit, told by a narrator with a perspective and voice unlike any in recent literature. A bravura performance, it is the finest recent work from a true master. To be bound in a nutshell, see the world in two inches of ivory, in a grain of sand. Why not, when all of literature, all of art, of human endeavour is just a speck in the universe of possible things?

Revisado: 07-21-23
I’ve read this twice and this was first listen. The reader is spot on. I laughed out loud several times even though I knew the story. His delivery was droll that he perfectly captures the character. McEwan is a genius and this story is a delight.

Story line a bit dated
Revisado: 02-23-23
It was an ok book. A bit predictable. The protagonist has a few homophobic, gender and racial stereotyped views that are a bit off putting but in reality are probably accurately portrayed traits for a professional in Richmond in the early 90s when it was written. The science was fairly accurate- which is not always the case.
