If you can make it through the first few chapters that spend more time rereading her stats over and over than actually telling the story, you will find a very enjoyable tale.

A very pleasant surprise

When I first found out that Ravensdagger's next book would not be Cinnamon Bun 4, but some new IP, I was a little put out. I only got it because I had finished the other books I was reading and thought "why not?" Now, I would consider it good news if Ravensdagger announced that they will be canceling every other project to focus on Stray Cat. I haven't been this into a book for a long time. I would whole heartedly recommend this book and I eagerly await a sequel.

it just doesn't work

I did not finish the book, maybe it improved so take this review with a grain of salt.

My first problem is one I have encountered a few times: the young girl who grew up in an assassins guild, who trained for years and surpassed her fellow trainies...is completely inept in all things assassin. I begin to suspect that assassin training consists of sitting in a dark room, reading emo poetry to better understand what it means to be a shadow.

My other complaint is the screwed attempt to take the moral high ground. They are assassin. They are not the good guys. It is established that you can send in a name and some gold and that person will be killed, no questions asked. When she finds that some people were going to kill the dragon for money, she was appalled. "How could they do that? Dragons are intelligent, they speak!" Says the assassin. So, killing a scullery maid for testifying against the noble who raped her is okay, but killing a dragon who has admitted to killing and eating people is wrong?

Trying to be funny

This is a romantic comedy set to a horribly dark backdrop. It's like have a love story between Nazi guards at a death camp. They will casually talk about raping and torturing slaves to let off steam, then make a joke about him making a social faux pas like comparing her breasts to his mother's, then laugh about how he thinks it is normal to torture a child to death in front of her mother just for fun. Even the "good" nations think torturing a person to death for being born different is a family event.

Is it a slapstick comedy or a horror?

The story will jump back and forth from juvenile slapstick humor to depictions of torture and horror. Either could have made for a good book, but together, it is something that is targeted at kids, that you would never let your kids read.

Lacking

The story is full of errors, polt holes and inconsistencies. The narrative is disjointed at times and there are 20 minute stretches where the characters are literally just talking about, or even quizing each other on, 1980s pop culture. The author is trying so hard to push his political views that he damages his own arguments. The story did have some appeal, and I have enjoyed other books by the author, but this book is a dud.

I also don't think the author actually knows how tall six inch heels are. That's practically fetish wear.

Enjoyable

Overall, I have enjoyed this series and will buy the third novel. Physics take a back seat, but that is expected from a steampunk/fantasy. The characters can be infuriatingly dense, but they are teenagers. The one thing that really rubs me the wrong way is how the reader pronounces turbine as turban. With most novels, a mispronunciation is a rare occurrence and no big deal, but to mispronounce a word that is used dozens of times throughout the series grates on the nerves after a while.

At least the reader was good

It seems like Lee tried to write a feel good, underdog sports story, but wanted to add a little drama. Unfortunately, that drama raged out of control and she wrote her main character into a corner that there was no way to escape from, so she decided to try a deus ex machina that didn't actually solve anything. All the main characters are screwed and the human race is headed to a interplanetary civil war that will end in genocide.

Good usually

I liked the book and the characters interactions. The issue is that in certain chapters they literally copied entire scenes from book 4 same wording same jokes. identical. I actually had to check if I accidentally started the fourth book. Other than that chapter it was really good
