Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Bloated apocalypse
Revisado: 06-29-24
Not King’s best. Too much fillerand some serious cringe in many chapters, of misogynistic and ableist character. Why isn’t the edited version available?

Fabulous reading of a must-read book
Revisado: 04-28-24
Brilliant reading by a world class actor who really gets the beauty, poignancy, and clarity of Woolf’s poetic vision.

Historia
Mary, unloved and selfish, finds friendship and happiness helping her neurotic, invalid cousin become strong and healthy. Nature's powerful magic touches both children as they toil to revive their secret garden. The story alludes to some very modern themes including the ability of mental beliefs to create health, the strength of group optimism, and the restorative power of nature.

Problems with sound recording
Revisado: 01-30-24
Like this reader very much and the story is a classic that everyone should know. There are problems with the recording quality, however. I wonder if these could be attended to by audible?

Would you try another book from Henry James and/or Emma Thompson and Richard Armitage - introduction ?
Love this story. And Emma Thompson. Who would think that her reading would be such a let-down?! I would not recommend it.

Historia
Lymstock is a town with more than its share of shameful secrets - a town where even a sudden outbreak of anonymous hate mail causes only a minor stir. But all that changes when one of the recipients, Mrs. Symmington, commits suicide. Her final note says "I can’t go on", but Miss Marple questions the coroner's verdict of suicide. Soon nobody is sure of anyone - as secrets stop being shameful and start becoming deadly.

One of Christie's Best
Revisado: 05-02-17
Where does The Moving Finger rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is truly one of the best though it is not as well known as some of Christie's other mysteries. And the narration-- pure magic. I would listen to this narrator read pretty much anything. His recording of Pocket Full of Rye is also stellar.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. Love the plot. And-- oddly-- love the fact that we're kept waiting for Mrs. Marple to appear for so long. When she finally shows up, it is the magic icing on the cake.
What does Richard E. Grant bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Fun, silly, moving, perfect characterization.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The transformation of Megan. And the moment it is clear that the narrator's sister is falling for the village doctor.
Any additional comments?
I can't recommend this reading highly enough. I have been ritually disappointed with many narrators of Christie. Richard E. Grant and Joan Hickson are pure magic every time, and David Suchet comes in for a close second.
