Author’s Note: This book features NO significant changes! The story has been re-published with a new cover and minor changes, but it brings nothing new to the readers who have already purchased or read it! Elizabeth d’Arcy is one of my boldest twists—in terms of plot, that is 😊. Napoleon’s spies, outlaws, dangers, and love above all—this story has it all. When Darcy is assaulted in his own home, nearly everyone assumes it is the handiwork of a common thief searching for valuable items—everyone except his aunt Lady Antoinette Darcy. With the sole missing item being the family ...

What I liked:
It was free and relatively short.
What I disliked:
Basically everything after Kent, but most especially the ending.

"It is remarkable how many great romances begin with a lie." When Fitzwilliam Darcy returns to Netherfield with an outrageous proposal, a false courtship to protect his sister's future, Elizabeth Bennet is certain he has lost his senses. Yet as she learns of Lady Catherine's threats and his devotion to Georgiana, Elizabeth finds herself agreeing to the charade. Their arrangement is meant to be temporary. He gains protection from his aunt's schemes, while she escapes her mother's desperate matchmaking and secures Bingley's return for Jane. Simple, practical, and absolutely not romantic. As ...

Repetitious and Inconsistent
Revisado: 04-05-25
I am convinced this was not only narrated by AI, but also written by AI. Or possibly an 80-20 split, with the bulk of the book written by AI, and the remaining written by a teenage novice. With all the money Audible is saving on narration and writing, they would do well to spend a little bit on editors, specifically a continuity editor and an accuracy editor. The terrible narration may have been easier to bear if the book wasn't riddled with so many inconsistencies and historical inaccuracies.

Yay! It's finally over!
Revisado: 03-15-25
The first half of the first book was all right. Interesting, even. Then it just devolved into a rambling, repetitive, exaggerated, verbose mess of saccharine and evil. If I could review this book using only emojis, it could be summed up with just the eye roll emoji.
I will say the descriptions of Caroline's gowns did make me literally laugh out loud. That was actually very enjoyable.

In this charming reimagining of Jane Austen's beloved classic, the world of Regency England is aflutter with a new obsession: exotic birds. As the gentry vie for status with their colorful avian companions, Elizabeth Bennet finds herself thrust into a world of peacocks, parrots, and pride. When the wealthy and austere Mr. Darcy arrives in Hertfordshire with his prized cockatoo, Elizabeth is determined to dislike him, despite his feathered friend's attempts to win her over. But as misunderstandings take flight and secrets emerge, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy must navigate a society where a rare ...

In this clean reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Thomas Bennet has a much older sister, Marianne, who enters into an arranged marriage when she is fifteen and Thomas is five. The siblings have little contact and no real interest in each other. Marianne is widowed and remarries and in the process becomes Lady Fetton, a Duchess and a very wealthy woman. Years pass and after Marianne is widowed a second time she returns to Longbourn and becomes involved in the lives of the Bennets only weeks before the Bingleys and Darcy arrive at Netherfield. It should've been listed as a vagary, not a variation
Revisado: 08-29-24
Even increasing the playback speed to 1.7 couldn't bring this vagary to an end quickly enough. The repetitive, long-winded, didactic diatribes of Duchess Aunt Maryanne made this story intolerable. Her omniscient self-righteousness made her character completely insufferable, and unfortunately the entire book was centered around her.
Whenever I see "vagary" listed in the description I know to avoid those books because I really don't like the principle characters behaving in ways the originals never would, and this story had Jane yelling at Lizzy, Lizzy yelling at her father, and Mary yelling at everyone, including her parents, and all of these confrontations just dripped with sanctimony by the speaker. I'm just thankful it's finally over.

I love JAFF but this one kept me in a constant state of annoyance

Couldn't wait for it to end
Revisado: 07-30-24
If it had just been Mr. Collins' character that had changed it might've been an enjoyable listen, at least in the beginning, but nearly EVERY character, save Lydia, was FAR different than the original. I believe the author thought to make the Bennett ladies assertive and fierce, but they came across as aggressive, disrespectful, sanctimonious, and just plain obnoxious. Even the reimagined Anne was unnecessarily snippy with Darcy.
As to the story itself, it could have EASILY been trimmed down by at least a third, if not me. The tedium was almost unbearable. I wish my constitution would allow me to not finish a book, but since it won't I am very thankful that Audible offers a variety of playback speeds. I spent the last 2 hours at 1.7, but I probably should've just gone straight to 2.0. At least it's over now.

Historia
Of Gates and Grace is a light, sweet, very low-angst novella of a little 39,000 words written from a decidedly Christian perspective. When Darcy and Elizabeth meet for the first time – or is it the second? – he mistakes her for a wood nymph. Excerpt: “Well, are you coming in?” After a pause, the gatekeeper, presumably St. Peter, repeated more slowly as if he was speaking to slow-witted children, “So are you two coming in or staying out there?” Darcy spoke first, “I don’t think I’m finished yet. I have more that I need to accomplish. My sister isn’t yet married, and…and...

Why must a lady marry at all? Of course a person must have means… and the Bennets had none. But surely her father would live to be a great age. Not yet fifty, Mr. Bennet had years before they must worry about Mr. Collins casting them out. It was only Mama that was difficult. Some days Lizzie believed that her mother would marry each one of them off at the first opportunity, regardless of personal wishes or lack of affection. But, as her mother’s child, she could be equally stubborn. Elizabeth Bennet would marry for love and nothing less. However, when she believes that her father is ...

I would've given it 4 stars if not for the repetitious whining about the rights of women. We get it. Things were different then. Stop harping and preaching and just tell the story. In fact, my eyes nearly got stuck from rollkng them so hard during the epilogue.

Unless one knows the value of loyalty, he cannot appreciate the cost of betrayal. What if Darcy and Elizabeth met weeks before the Meryton assembly? What if there is no barely “tolerable” remark to have Elizabeth rejecting Mr. Darcy’s affections, but rather a dip in a cold creek that sets her against him? What if Mr. Bennet is a renown Shakespearean scholar who encourages Darcy to act the role of Petruchio from Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” to bring Elizabeth’s Katherina persona to the line? ELIZABETH BENNET’s pride has her learning a difficult lesson: Loyalty is ...

Warning: This review may be a little spoiler-y. :)
Revisado: 06-24-24
I really enjoyed this book until things took a flaming nosedive around Chapter 18. Darcy's reaction to the Lady Catherine confrontation had me fuming, but then how he handled Wickham at his house threw me into a rage. Mr. Bennett taking Darcy's side irritated the snot out of me, but what made me want to just stop listening and add the author to my NEVER AGAIN list was Elizabeth's attitude and how she chose to solve the problem.
Also, in many of these Virtual Voice P&P variations the author often has Georgianna refer to her brother as "Darcy," which makes me think AI was the true author. :/ Lastly, a weird plot hole that bothered me was when Georgianna said she was no longer angry with Elizabeth for causing chaos or betraying her trust, bc no one even told Elizabeth about Wickham's bad deeds until AFTER he showed up at Darcy House, so how was she supposed to know? Maybe it wouldn't have been that big of a deal but I was already aggravated by the other events, so it just added to my annoyance.
