Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Unearned last page twist
Revisado: 07-07-21
Would have given it 5 stars were it not for the completely out of left field twist at the very end. Overall, it's an enjoyable enough, though unoriginal, psychological thriller, but you really have to earn a twist that big, and this book just didn't.

Of all the Holmes fiction out there, these books are the best short of Doyle.

Terrible story of generational parental neglect
Revisado: 11-04-19
It's a very interesting story, but everyone in it comes of as a bad parent. There's a father who's seemingly just a monster, a mother whose response to losing her children is literally "well, I was so young, I could just go start a new family so it all worked out," and children who are so damaged by their experiences that, in hints and unspoken insinuations, they seem to be terrible parents themselves. I just can't imagine having so little regard for your children. Heartbreaking.

Really glad he was able turn his life around. This is written by a man haunted by his addiction and projecting it outwards on everyone.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Reminds me of old Stephen King
Revisado: 09-14-19
This book is outstanding - easily King's best work since 11/22/63 - but more broadly it reminds me of the... I guess, "special" feeling of King's earlier works, like Christine or The Dead Zone or Firestarter, the book this most closely resembles. It feels like an event, like something that will become shorthand in the cultural lexicon, like Cujo or Jack Torrance. This is a great book. I hope King has some more like this left in him.

Historia
In Chicago the year 1979, Detective David Neal and his partner were thrust into a series of dark, grisly murders. The darkest they and the people of Chicago, had ever seen. The deaths were so bizarre; the government got involved sending a beautiful female FBI agent, who seemed to have her own agenda. After seeing an older female at one of the crime scenes, David and David only saw her time and time again in the strangest places.

This is the worst book I have ever read.
Revisado: 07-22-19
I don't even know where to begin with how terrible this book is. The performance is atrocious, almost as if someone were reading the back of a cereal box. At a certain point, I began to think that the narrator was intentionally making the reading terrible, as a way of insulting this terrible, terrible story. the author has no idea how fiction works. none of the characters have any depth, people take actions for no reason whatsoever, the author has little command of the English language, and in general this appears to be a 7th grade English class assignment. Do not waste your time reading or listening to this trash.

Historia
From one of the truly preeminent historians of our time, this is a landmark book chronicling the French Revolution. Simon Schama deftly refutes the contemporary notion that the French Revolution represented an uprising of the oppressed poor against a decadent aristocracy and corrupt court. He argues instead that the revolution was born of a rift among the elite over the speed of progress toward modernity and science, social and economic change.

Engaging book that makes enjoyable reading of history, but this narrator's voice is essentially unlistenable. Everyone I played this for agreed that they could never listen to anything narrated by him.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Great twist, not much else
Revisado: 10-08-18
Halfway through this book, you'll run into one of the best twists you'll ever see in any novel. Amazingly executed, and makes you want to go back and read everything before with new knowledge. Unfortunately, the book has little else to recommend it, as the story is very routine and unoriginal, the characters are stock charicatures, and they'd nothing really compelling about anything else going on. But, oh man, that twist...
