Historia
Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Magnusdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the sea break into a sudden and reckless storm. Forty fishermen, including her brother and father, are drowned and left broken on the rocks below. With the menfolk wiped out, the women of the tiny Arctic town of Vardø must fend for themselves. Three years later, a stranger arrives on their shore. Absalom Cornet comes from Scotland, where he burned witches in the northern isles. He brings with him his young Norwegian wife, Ursa.

Gorgeous writing, dark story
Revisado: 12-22-22
There is a review posted in 2020 that is headlined, 'Superb', and I can't really add anything as that is the perfect word to describe this story, the writing, and Jessie Buckley's amazing narration.
Can't wait for The Dance Tree in 2023! I have a new favorite author.

Historia
Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

Complex Storytelling
Revisado: 12-16-22
The concept for this book, the first in a series, is very unique. I actually had a hard time wrapping my head around it, which isn't a bad thing.
I split my time between reading and listening. Due to the complexity of the story, the narration was, at times, a little hard to follow. The narrator did a good job; I think there are simply some stories that lend themselves better to reading the physical book versus listening to an audible production.
I plan to continue with the series when the 2nd book comes out. If you like magic and the supernatural, mixed with a little bit of Science Fiction, this book is for you!

Historia
London, 1679 - A year has passed since the attempt to murder King Charles II, but London is still a viper's nest of rumored Catholic conspiracies, and of plots against them in turn. When Harry Hunt—estranged from his mentor Robert Hooke—is summoned to the remote and windswept marshes of Norfolk, he is at first relieved to get away from the place. But in Norfolk, he finds that some Royal workers shoring up a riverbank have made a grim discovery—the skeleton of a dwarf.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A fantasy/adventure story not to be missed!
Revisado: 11-08-22
Honestly, I would give this book 6 stars if that was an option. It was such a pleasure to enter King's fairy tale world! This was an incredibly imaginative tale with well-drawn characters that you come to know and love (and some you love to hate). It is very well-written, with a nice narrative flow and rhythm. I typically alternate between the hardback book and the audible narration (which I listen to while walking on my lunch hour at work and on my drive home). I cannot imagine a better narrator than Seth Numrich. He had to give voice to numerous characters with completely different personalities, and - seemingly effortlessly - he really brought them all to life!
I believe Fairy Tale may be one of the nominees in the fantasy category for the Goodreads awards for 2022. It will probably have some stiff competition from Holly Black's Book of Night and/or Little Eve by Catriona Ward. Not having yet read Book of Night (and likely starting Little Eve this week), my first instinct is this is the fantasy pick of the year. But then again, what do I know?
In any case, read Fairy Tale and enjoy it. You won't be sorry!

Excellent in every way!
Revisado: 09-09-22
I took advantage of this free download, as an alternative to listening to music while at work. I bought the book quite some time ago, but never got around to reading it for some unknown reason. In any case, I am so pleased that I chose to download this production. The narration is flawless. The music and the background effects help the actors to create the necessary atmosphere.
This is a gothic horror novel/drama, that reminded me in many ways of the acting in the movie "Gaslight" with Ingrid Berman and Charles Boyer. If you have seen that movie, or others like it, you will well understand why the novel is read and acted in the "breathy" tone mentioned by other reviewers. I feel this approach is highly appropriate for the time period in which the novel was written and takes place. I can definitely see why this is novella is considered a precursor to Dracula, another excellent gothic novel.
If you appreciate gothic and Victorian-style dramas, and love the Vampire genre, I believe you would really love this production. It's obvious that David Tennant and Rose Leslie are having the time of their lives with their performances, and we are the very lucky benefactors of their talents!

Historia
Inspired by true events, Far Away Bird delves into the complex mind of Byzantine Empress Theodora. This intimate account deftly follows her rise from actress-prostitute in Constantinople’s red-light district to the throne of the Byzantine Empire. More than a millennium before the women’s rights movement, Theodora, alone, took on the world’s greatest superpower and succeeded. Far Away Bird goes where history classrooms fear to tread, in hopes that Theodora can finally take her seat among the greatest women in history.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 12-15-20
Just when I thought no narrator was as good as Xe Sands along comes Mary Sarah. Her narration is spectacular!
I’ve read much historical fiction and non-fiction, much of which is/was about royal females. The book is good, and I highly recommend it. The narration, however, takes it to the next level.
The author’s style is a combination of historical story-telling with a fairy tale quality. Mary Sarah captures the beauty of this quality.

Excellent narration!
Revisado: 11-11-19
Excellent narration of a highly complex story with numerous characters and fantasy lands! I suggest that you alternate between listening and reading, however, as you will need to use the maps, Cast of Characters, Glossary, and timeline of events.
The intricacies of the story do not lend themselves well to a Kindle version. Hop back and forth between Audible and a good old-fashioned hardback copy. Paperback due out next year.
Enjoy!!!
