Great fictional characters illuminate historical Japan and European interactions.

Loved the characters and the multiple voices of each. I enjoyed how the main character perseveres and survives. The final chapters, however, speed up and skip so much that could be told. i guess i’ll look for the author to write another book about those intervening years.

Historia
Zachary Taylor or “Old Rough and Ready” as his men called him, came up through the ranks in the U.S. army with the culmination of his career occurring at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. His military exploits brought him national notoriety and propelled him to the office of the president in the election of 1848. A bit of an enigma, he was a southern slaveholder who vehemently opposed the expansion of slavery into the new western territories that had been won in the war with Mexico. The political arena was a new domain for Taylor, having never held a political ...

AI reader isn’t good
Revisado: 11-06-24
The artificial intelligence reader made several grammatical errors and was just off. The script was cursory. No depth. I got what I paid for … not much.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

The story is interesting and has great characters. The reader’s performance brought each to life perfectly. This will be a good movie someday.

Historia
One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

Every American should read or listen to this book
Revisado: 09-16-18
I read this book in High School and it helped shaped my perspective on how to live a valuable life. I just listened to it again, 35 years later, and it reaffirmed that perspective. This is a great book with an important message; a message that is uniquely American. Find your own path, open your own doors. The story is dated, but still compelling. The message is still important and the audible performance is well done.

Revisado: 06-30-18
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I love all of David McCullough's other books so I trusted this would be worth the time. It was. I learned about great americans that I had never heard of before. I also learned more appreciation for the French people and Paris. In fact, I now want to go visit.

Good, not great
Revisado: 12-02-17
A good addition to the series, but not quite as captivating as the first two books. I found myself glad it was ending so that I could get back to the main characters in book 3. Still well worth the listen though! Note: the first hour or so of this book is one of the interludes (the one about Lift) from Stormlight 2.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great read!
Revisado: 11-10-17
This book is great! One of the better stories I’ve listened to in a while, and on top of the good story telling there are interesting discussions about leadership, honor, and religion behind it all that really make you think. (Religion as a concept, not any specific real-world religion.)
The performance is good, but not earth shatteringly so. For the most part the voices are well done and distinct enough to easily identify main characters. Having chapters that follow a woman’s point of view voiced by a woman (and conversely male chapters voiced by a man) is a nice touch. However, the beginning of chapter 69 absolutely destroyed the performance for me. It’s told from the perspective of the king’s mother, and so it read by Kate Reading. However the character who are in the scene are typically seen from the perspective of the king’s uncle or other male members of the cast, and so are typically voiced by Michael Kramer. While Kate’s performance is still good, she pronounces some names differently (especially Sadius’) and gives drastically different voices to otherwise familiar characters. It’s very distracting at a crucial point in the story, and I feel it drags the performance down as a whole, hence the 2 star rating. Without this one colossal mistake (especially so near the end of the book), I would have rated the performance as 4 out of 5.
