I enjoyed the steady thrill of this story despite its idealistic character development and story.

If you like the Cork O’Connor series, you should love this one. Not because of the more than average amount of carnage that occurs, or the momentary nod to S&M (not acts, just context), and not even because of the many moments of simple yet eloquent scenes of what love in marriages can sound like - be like.

I think you’ll love Red Knife because it is William Kent Kruger and The character O’Connor at their best (with the audio version narrated by the ever great David Chandler), with less predictability, great drama, character development, and more.

Another good one in the Cork O’Connor series, but anyone who knows basic Spanish may see the ending long before Krueger reaches the last chapter and Sheriff O’Connor solves the crime and saves the day…but for one exception: this book doesn’t really end the story, the mystery or solve the crime. It just sets up the next chapter.

A life worth reading

Towards the beginning of this book, I wasn’t sure if the author’s appreciation for his own prose might get in the way of telling Charlie White’s life story. As it turns out, Charlie’s story is so powerful, enjoyable and worth telling that the author’s sometimes-too-intentional efforts at poetic descriptions fades to the overpowering stoic diligence of Charlie’s life.

This is a life worth reading about, a true story of lived philosophy told well, despite my earlier comments about the author. The Audible version that I used was narrated well enough to keep the listener absorbed. You won’t get much more than a simple philosophy from Charlie himself, but perhaps you’ll gain a healthy philosophy by reading an account of his life experiences.

And Charlie lived an incredible life for 109 years, from one century to another, through depression to prosperity and countless other tumultuous social, political, economic, technological…changes of the past century. His experiences and connections to known history, let alone the length of his fascinating life, were the result of “luck”, according to Charlie. Yet his lucky life at least, in part, was made through Charlie’s response to every circumstance.

This is a life story well worth reading.

This installment in the Walt Longmire series was lighter and the humor (Walt’s internal monologue or quick repartee with other characters) a little goofier than other stories in the series so far. Any notion of a plot was slow-developing; I’m not sure I would have continued the series if it was my first to pick up. It was not, of course, so I shall continue the series with glee. The narration by George Guidall was superb, as usual.

Allen Eskens comes through with what may be my favorite of his books to date! I call it “fantastic” for specific reasons: Eskens masterfully weaves the interplay of spiritual belief and doubt in most of his work and especially in Saving Emma. Is there a true prophet of God at work in this story? Are there miracles? Or can everything be explained by logic or at least coincidence?

The story may lead to where you believe it will to some degree or another, but I guarantee you will enjoy every twist and turn it takes to get to the climactic last page.

A pastor friend recommended Rachel Held Evans to me, and I crowd-sourced recommendations for which of her books to begin. Wholehearted Faith was the winner and proved worthy! I will be reading more of her work. She is such a refreshing voice, one that the American church desperately needs. Her deep faith resonates with every word.

Evans writes with the honesty and sanity, along with immediate practicality, that is missing from much evangelical writing. She reveals truth in scripture with a solid faith and understanding, bolstered by her own honest willingness to thoughtfully explore her doubts. The result is a masterpiece of essays, assembled posthumously and lovingly read by those who knew and loved her before her tragic death.

If you’re new to Evans writing, this is a great one with to start. If you are familiar with Evans but not this work, it will not disappoint.

I read it, er, listened to the end, but what just happened? Alex meanders through Long Island fooling everyone for awhile before she breaks something that always includes the trust of others. Of course, she is fooling herself most of all by believing that she can continue to use people, but can she do so without becoming just used up? Then it ends. It just ends.

I am a fan of reading history when captured well in prose. Sure, I know the outcome, but not the infinitesimal accounts of lives and events that are the path to the outcome we have come to know.

Daniel James Brown delivers a page-turning account, well-researched, and yes, in excellent prose that provides for thoroughly enjoyable reading, or in my case listening to the audio version read by Edward Hermann.

A great story told well about “the boys in the boat,” about the sport of crewing and it’s almost perfect need for teamwork, and about the Great Depression and rise of Nazi Germany, too. A must read, and maybe read again!

Good story and, despite what other reviewers may say, a good mixture of adventure and slow romance with a nice twist at the end. Not one of Charles Martin’s best, but still a good one worth reading.
