Tensions between Earth and the alien Varoki are on the rise, and Sam is assigned as tactical officer aboard the deep space destroyer USS Puebla. Dispatched to the distant world of K'tok to protect human colonists, he wants nothing more than to serve out his active duty time and get back to his civilian life. DNF - narrator not great and story only soso
Revisado: 12-20-24
I just couldn't keep going. The narrator had almost the same voice for all characters include male and female by did try to change it up a little by adding accents however not everyone can have a different accent. The voice was also a bit grating and I felt like I was being yelled at the whole time. Then the story........ inconsistencies started popping up and weird irrelevent details that made it hard for me to remain engaged in the story. I finally gave up and returned the book.

Love that Lilly finally got her opportunity to see Avalon, I have been waiting for that all series! Please find a new narrator though, it detracts from the story.

Great story, Bad Narration
Revisado: 08-28-24
I love this series but the new narrator was so bad it was distracting from the story. The acting is so over the top bad that I find myself thinking of that and not the story. Think of the old old movies where the bad guy in the handlebar mustache laughs evilly. That is what this entire 9 hours was like. The accents were so over the top and they did not help much differential between characters. I really miss the old narrator.

Because she knows that her abilities are essential to keep the plants alive that keep the colonists alive and that will be the basis for their survival when they reach their destination. OK story, horrible narration
Revisado: 08-01-24
Great premise for the story, it's lighthearted mostly has a bit of world building. I would have liked it to be more in depth. The characters are a bit one dimensional as well. Everyone is pure good or pure bad, no nuances and lots of me wondering how the heck things worked as there weren't really many details. Narration just just bad with the virtual voice. Lots of mispronounced words as AI can't tell the difference between cum and comm giving comm unit a really distorted meaning through the story and that phrase was used often. I would listen to these maybe if they are free but it's hard to stay focused on the story with the virtual voice having limited ranged and no differentiation between the voices of the characters. I would NOT pay a credit for the audio version of this book however.

Tough One to Finish
Revisado: 06-05-24
If you are a fan of military space stories, do not listen to this one. The virtual narration makes it very hard to tell the characters apart as they all sound the same and the voice is so monotonous that I find my mind drifting away from the story. Also, I listened to this immediately after finishing the Terms of Enlistment series by Marco Kloos and found myself rolling my eyes at the military and battle interactions. There was no comparison and this made my just cringe when in the middle of a space battle the Terran forces are asking "can you hear me" over the radio; bridge crew stops their work and turn they chairs toward the officers to answer questions in the middle of the battle. I found myself not caring if they won because I was kinda frustrated and didn't feel a connection to any of the characters.

Just bad all around
Revisado: 06-05-24
Virtual voice is bad - bland with very little inflection and no variation between characters. The story was worse though. It was like someone made a vague outline of a bad story and had AI fill in the rest. Strange word choices, sudden stops and changes in the story and there is no character development, no real thoughts from anyone to build on the story. It's abrupt and half baked. I should have known from the bad title and bad description. I wasn't sure what the story was about because the description reads more like a sales pitch. So glad this was free with Plus, otherwise I'd be asking for a refund.

DNF - unfocused and confusing
Revisado: 06-04-24
I just couldn't get into this story at all. The narrator did a decent job but most of the time I was trying to figure out WTF was happening. It takes 4 chapters to describe I think 10 minute of action but with all the convoluted backstory, flashbacks or premonitions, I could not keep it all straight, there was extraordinary details about insignificant things, lots and lots of ramblings and musings that don't add anything to the character at which point I couldn't remember what was happening. At chapter 12 I realized I really didn't care anymore and just gave up.

Great story, female narrator not so much
Revisado: 05-06-24
I love the stories, the world building is amazing and quickly pulls me in. Mason Lloyd is an awesome narrator, natural with a smooth deep voice that makes it easy to get lost in the story. But then Jillian Macie and the female voice abruptly pulls me out of the story and all I can focus on is the over dramatic sighs and lack of real emotion. I find myself contemplating the weird narration instead of the story.

DNF - Couldn't follow along
Revisado: 02-01-24
The story might get better but the author introduces EVERYONE up front, then a few time hops back and forth and I was getting lost in the detail and just wanted to get to the story. The virtual narration compounded that issue to the point I could not finish. With that many characters, the virtual voice needs to differentiate between characters which it currently does not do thus making it even harder to follow the story. Women and men have the same voice not to mention EVERY character has the same voice. There is some inflection with the narration but not nearly enough. I would say I've heard other narrators that are worse in that they over dramatize or are more flat than the virtual narrator (VN). The VN hasn't figured out to how to end chapters or sentences with a drop in tone. You are left feeling like it stopped mid sentence.

Interesting Story, bad narration
Revisado: 10-18-23
The story is similar to others I've heard, entertaining enough but the narrator OMG please don't try accents. I think she's trying for a Welsh accent but it comes out like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets. The stuttering pauses made is so distracting I am not really sure I can finish this book.
