Historia
When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

There was So Much rape. I hated this book with a passion. I finished it, but I don't feel good about that.

It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....

Modern Gothic
Revisado: 05-16-23
Sometimes, I want a book to make me feel like I did when I first read Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights. While this novel wasn't a literary classic, it did use many Gothic techniques that conjured that feeling in a modern way. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Shy and gawky, Ana has always daydreamed about living the life of her exotic half-sister Bee, a pop singer who had a number one hit single before she inexplicably vanished from the celebrity scene. When Bee turns up dead, Ana is dispatched to the big city to clear out her apartment. Instantly seduced by the second-hand glamour of Bee's baubles, bangles, and bottles of Pierre-Jouet, Ana takes up with Bee's wild club-hopping cronies.

R word!
Revisado: 04-28-23
I like books like this where a young woman must unravel secrets about a family member and comes into their own in the process.
HOWEVER. This book is from 2019 and, even though it's set in 2000, it can be unnecessarily politically incorrect. In one scene, Anna says that she doesn't want someone to think she's "retarded," which is no longer appropriate. As always in Ms. Jewell's writing, there are also elements of fatphobia/shaming (I really wish she could get past her body image issues that bleed into her work), so please use discretion if you struggle in those areas and don't want to read about things that may trigger you.

Historia
Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

Slow Start
Revisado: 04-04-23
It took me several hours to get familiar with the characters enough to follow all the strings between the characters, but once I did, it made for a great story. Freddie's subplot was my favorite part of the whole book, though.
My one issue with Jewell is that she is clearly from a different generation; her books are often filled with main female characters dwelling on their weight and calling themselves "fatty." I would love to see her stories avoid fat phobia, as these ruminations don't bring anything to the plot.

Historia
On a chilly November morning at the University of Georgia, a fraternity brother steps off a busy crosswalk and is struck dead by an oncoming car. More than a dozen witnesses all agree on two things: the driver looked identical to the victim, and he was smiling. Detective Marlitt Kaplan is first on the scene. An Athens native and the daughter of a UGA professor, she knows all its shameful histories, from the skull discovered under the foundations of Baldwin Hall to the hushed-up murder-suicide in Waddel.

Just depressing from start to finish. The main character also speaks about college kids like she's 40. I have a hard time seeing her be that cynical about people who are less than 8 years younger than she is.

Oooooh, so juicy
Revisado: 02-20-21
I ripped through this in two sittings. Everything is right there in front of us, but we have to put it together as Louise does, and that kept me engaged from start to finish. I figured out the twist shortly before the end, but it was so satisfying that I screamed and cheered when it was unraveled. This was such a juicy read.
There was one thing that concerned me about Adam (if you've read the book, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about). I'm done with the novel but I'm still worried about this character!
All of the narrators performed at the top of their game!

This story was pretty meh. Just your standard, superficial thriller. A good enough story to play in the background whilst working in a spreadsheet. The narrator was exceptional, however. I was very impressed by her ability to switch seamlessly between different accents and voices.

Loved!
Revisado: 02-18-20
The narrator for this story was absolutely magnificent. That cannot be overstated. Magnificent.
The story itself was nice and tightly plotted. While I figured things out before I was halfway through, it was fun to see all the strands knit together. I am definitely going to look into this author's other books.

It’s hell on her social life. Abe is the doctor and Sam's partner in crime. He isn’t much of a criminal. Except for the kidney stealing. But he’s using that money to fund his research that he anticipates will be able to cure diabetes. So, all for a good cause...? You decide. Of course, it's hell on his social life.

So. Much. Fun.
Revisado: 02-12-20
I loved everything about this one! The performances (by some of my very favorite comedic actors) were absolutely top notch. The writing was very witty and self-aware in the best way, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention how well the music and effects set the scene. Overall A++.
