The Randy Rhoads That I Knew: Stories from Bandmates, Family and Friends is just that, a set of interviews from those who surrounded him in the studio, at home and on the stage. These interviews first appeared in The Randy Rhoads Guitar Chat, available at Apple Books. The Randy Rhoads Guitar Chat was produced with the cooperation and support of the Rhoads family. We were given rare access to family photos and also included historic audio of Randy speaking along with interactive artwork and videos. But if you can’t shop at Apple books you’re out of luck. This paperback edition takes the ...

AI narrator is distracting.
Revisado: 04-21-25
Kind of thin. Nothing new here. Feels like a cash grab honestly. The “virtual voice” narrator is distracting with the Speak & Spell” gurgle at the end of most sentences. Mispronunciation abounds and as you listen, it gets worse. I personally don’t want to listen to AI narrators. Especially not after listening to this.

Historia
China thought it would be a quick war, an easy war. But now, years later, as the insurgency on the streets of Los Angeles escalates but the propaganda never changes, a Chinese officer can’t keep silent any longer. Torn between loyalty to his country and loyalty to his troops, he writes a brutally honest—and possibly suicidal—letter home to unmask the truth. Brooks combines his signature meticulous research with unforgettable characters in this landmark work of speculative fiction.

Another audiobook with editing mistakes by Max Brooks
Revisado: 06-26-24
Max tells a good story. This one is told in the manner of World War Z but the protagonist is very different. Not bad for a short story. Once again the final audio master file has an editing mistake. Fortunately it is in the end credits unlike WWZ where it involved chapters of the narrative. Is no one actually checking these things? Worth a listen.

Historia
Geddy Lee is one of rock and roll's most respected bassists. For nearly five decades, his playing and work as co-writer, vocalist and keyboardist has been an essential part of the success story of Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. Here for the first time is his account of life inside and outside the band.

Open, Honest and Answers A Lot of Questions.
Revisado: 01-03-24
Geddy is a true enigma. In the story of his life, he is open and quite honest about how the whirlwind of heartbreaking tragedy and life changing events affected him. He allows a closer look at the man that we thought we knew all this time, along with several revelations of what was really going on behind the scenes with Rush. In true Canadian modesty, he downplays his talent while revealing his humanity.
His narration is gentle, a bit cautious and focused with the occasional drop in's from Lerxst, (Alex Lifeson) and Cliff Burnstein. He could read children's books if the rock thing doesn't workout.
Overall, I personally would have liked to hear more about some of the later albums recording but I understand the editing choices.
Geddy did a great job with this book, I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it.

One of our best-loved actors, Michael Caine has starred in over 100 films in his six-decade career, spanning classic movies like Alfie, Zulu, and The Italian Job (the inspiration for the book title) to playing Alfred opposite Christian Bale's Batman in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Dark Knight trilogy. Caine has excelled in every kind of role - with a skill that's made it look easy. As he says, "Small parts can lead to big things. And if you keep doing things right, the stars will align when you least expect it."

Same Stories from The Elephant, plus Acting!
Revisado: 09-18-21
I love the stories Michael Caine tells in all of his autobiographies. It is even better that he narrates them as well. But in case you are considering this book or his other autobiography, The Elephant To Hollywood, you should know that the stories are the same in both. However, they are told a bit better in The Elephant. This book includes the stories as well as his acting tips and advise. So if you are not interested in the acting technique, get the other book. They are both very entertaining!

In February 1969, the Beatles began working on what became their final album together. Abbey Road introduced a number of new techniques and technologies to the Beatles' sound and included "Come Together", "Something", and "Here Comes the Sun", which all emerged as classics. Womack's colorful retelling of how this landmark album was written and recorded is a treat for fans of the Beatles. Solid State takes listeners back to 1969 and into EMI's Abbey Road Studios, which boasted an advanced solid state transistor mixing desk.

If you've read Geoff Emerick or George Martin's book, you won't really need this one. Especially since the author quotes those other books often. Even being a fan of studio tech and the history, I was hoping for a bit more.

Great behind the scenes.
Revisado: 08-20-21
It is a little bit of a strange premise as Morris talks to an imaginary Prince throughout the book. However, I see it as a tribute to his on again, off again relationship with the Purple One.
I only wish Morris had done the narration himself.

With extensive, first-hand reflections from Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, as well as from family, friends, and fellow musicians, Anthem: Rush in the '70s is a detailed portrait of Canada's greatest rock ambassadors. The first of three volumes, Anthem puts the band's catalog, from their self-titled debut to 1978's Hemispheres (the next volume resumes with the release of Permanent Waves) into both Canadian and general pop culture context.

Strange Repetition But Good Info
Revisado: 02-14-21
First, it is a great book. The performance is very good despite leaning on an endearing, "down home" delivery at times.
The reason for the lost star is the very strange habit the author has for quoting people, then immediately have them repeat themselves. Could it be the subjects speech pattern? Sure. But not when it happens so often to so many people quoted in the book. I commend Mr. Popoff for his work, but would prefer that he present the quotes "as is" instead of adding the weird repetition.
The book is well researched and truly gives the reader a feeling of being on the journey with the band as they grow up and become RUSH. I personally can't stand music critics reviews of albums, however the book is very good at not influencing the reader/listener and presents the music in a way that inspires curiosity.
I look forward to future installments of the bands story when available.

This is the definitive story of The Beatles. The how, the when and often, the why. I can't imagine what's to come in the next volume. The research is exhaustive, definitive and simply stunning. The book allows you to get to know the band as human beings and see their development in a way previously impossible as both musicians and human beings.
