LET GO. TRUST. RECEIVE. That is precisely what Max had to do. He felt stuck in his life and was yearning for something more meaningful. After years of working in investment banking in Frankfurt, London, and New York, he finally pulled the trigger to quit his job–or rather, ego-identity? What followed was two years of world travel, significant personal transformation, and rediscovery of our true essence.

On the hunt for a sea change
Revisado: 06-30-24
Max Tower was a narcissist, in a debauched, empty existence. A self-described robot in the machine that is Wall Street, he slowly came to realize changes had to be made after losing his girlfriend to his cheating. She hadn't deserved it and he knew he was in the wrong. His life became nothing but pain, until he suffers a meltdown. Losing an enormous amount of money, he turns to self-medicating with alcohol and cocaine. He was miserable and knew he had to face his mistakes and reorder his life for the sake of his future. He needed freedom and a sea change.
This is an emotional telling of one man's journey to redemption, Max leaves New York for two years, to travel, to empty his head of his past and decide the new direction of his life with money, his new purpose, and a new take on love. Unflinchingly honest and heart felt, it is a touching read filled with inspiration.
If you enjoyed Eat, Pray, Love, you'll love Two Years. I highly recommend this unflinching look into one man's journey toward healing and sense of self. 5 out of 5 stars.

Wanted to love this book, but...
Revisado: 08-16-20
A lifelong fan of Bradbury, I was very disappointed in this ego-stroking, self-involved book supposedly on writing. Doesn't change my opinion of his wonderful fiction, but this was a failure for me.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

but found it shockingly boring and far, far too longwinded. I thought, because of all the positive reviews this would be a great read. Nope. Can't recommend it.

Since they were children running barefoot about Toulouse Plantation, Josie and Cleo have been as close as sisters, forging an unbreakable bond that defies their roles as mistress and slave. Together, the two have shared secrets and protected each other through happiness and heartbreak. They never dream they could also share an intense passion for the same man, the elegant, charming, and irresistibly seductive Bertrand Chamard.

As someone who grew up in Louisiana and is very familiar with its history, I hated these four books so much I can scarcely put it into words. Let's begin with the narrator whose Black character voices were so tone-deaf and offensive I could scream. As a Cajun, I can assure you her Cajun accent was pathetically off-key. The two middle books were bodice-rippers, not "A Saga of Slavery and Deliverance." Taken as a whole, with slight exceptions in the fourth book (the portrayal of the terrorism of the Knights of the White Camelia), this paints the same picture as "Gone With the Wind" but without the epic grandeur. To make a long story short, this series portrayal of the happy, contented slaves and the benevolent masters is pure hogwash. Again, tone-deaf and highly offensive. I wish I could trade these in and at least get my money/credits back because heaven knows I'll never get my time back I wasted on these egregiously offensive tomes. Next time try getting an African American voice actor for something like this and it might not be as crappy. I nominate Bahni Turpin.

I'm a history buff and Republican Rome is one of my favorite eras of historical fiction. I was so excited to get my hands on this book. Color me astonished at all the hype because this book is an utter stinker. It is an entirely horrible novel. Shockingly boring, tedious and the performance, dear Goddess, the performance. The narrator has a horrific fake British accent and audibly GASPS for breath every third or fourth word. Just terrible from start to finish. As an author myself, I often wonder how writers like this one get published. Apparently, standards are low these days.

Historia
Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Extraordinary!
Revisado: 04-03-19
I have been longing to read this novel since it first came out, but had to wait until I could afford the audiobook version as my depression makes it very difficult to sit and actually read books. This story, so heartwarming and heartwrenching at the same time, kept me on the edge of my seat. It is truly a tale with loveable POV characters and relatable situations. I'm from the south--Louisiana--myself and was raised back in the 60s/70s. I was groomed only to make a good match, not become a person who stood on her own two feet. 'Lizbeth's struggles wrang so true, her parents' reactions and misdeeds. And Mattie is definitely the star and hero of this tale. I wept so many times while listening to this performance and that's never happened before. 5-stars all around and highly recommended!

Never gets old, or less terrifying
Revisado: 06-13-18
This is my second favorite story of all time. (Jane Eyre is my first, in case you were wondering.) I read it more than 30 years ago and it never fails to scare the hell out of me and keep me pinned to my seat. This is especially timely now with women's rights and autonomy so endangered here in America. We are about 6 months away from becoming Gilead. I'll see you in the Colonies.
