Big let down
Revisado: 04-27-24
I kept waiting for the punchline but it never really came. Shame as everything leading to to the finale was fine. A bit of mystery. A bit of romance and teenage angst. Sadly we were left with more questions than answers.

Good. Not great
Revisado: 04-22-24
The intro was 🔥 But overall, this one was a bit of a let down. A good sequel, but something was missing. I can't quite put my finger on what it was, but the thing that made me listen to the first two books in the series twice each was missing from this one. It could be because Janz waited so long between titles and lost the mojo for this particular world? I don't know.
Either way, it was good to see the crew reunited. There were even some tear jerking moments. Matt Godfrey did a great job as usual. There was just nothing particular scary or creepy in this one as in the first two books. It was more like action/horror in a way. But for the newly initiated, Savage Species was from multiple perspectives, which always makes for a deeper story. Children of the dark is solely from Will's perspective. So there will almost always be something lost by default from a 1st person perspective. In my opinion at least.
I'll still recommend it for sure. Highly even. But compared to the first two, its a bit lacking.

More "the omen" than ", the exorcist".
Revisado: 05-20-23
Descent story with genuinely creepy sometimes disturbing moments.
I don't understand the choice of going for the huge overarching religious themes as opposed to the smaller more intimately frightening ones like say, the exorcist. Once you get that ambitious there's always the temptation to go beyond what's needed in terms of the source material (the Bible, Christianity etc) and get into some strange writing choices.
I feel that this series has taken a turn for the worse with the direction that Mock has decided to take it. That said, still very creepy and I'm mildly interested enough to continue and see how it all gets resolved.

Audible quality control let this one slip thru the cracks. It was so bad that I had to keep listening just to see if it would make anymore sense further into the story.

Very good monster story. I found some of the death choices a bit questionable if not surprising. But definitely worth a listen.
One of the best epilogues I've heard in quite some time. Very heart warming.

Hard to follow the original
Revisado: 08-27-22
This book had it moments, but not enough. I got where Adam Cesare was attempting to go with it. However, he left out the most important ingredient that made the first Clown in a Cornfield so successful. Terror and helplessness. This one just wasn't scary. It wasn't even creepy.
With that being said it did touch on some important real world topics, namely the ease with which "alternative facts" can spread due to the internet and how the gullible can be radicalized and in some cases galvanized into taking action without any rational basis. And given relatively current headlines I suppose you can say that THAT is truly terrifying in the most literal sense...

Hate love. love hate
Revisado: 05-26-22
This book irritated my soul. So full of tropes. One religion lied about all the others, took over the world blah blah. Literally NOTHING about the dominate faith is true while all the other oppressed faith's were true.
Moral equivalency and relativism abounds.
MCs father by all accounts was a good man but for some inexplicable reason is borderline disrespected and considered a fool because surprise surprise, his wife is the actual badass in the family so fit whatever reason that automatically equates to dad being a boob.
Sex between a grown woman and a 15 yo girl.
But all that aside, Maberry builds a fascinating world here. One that is intriguing enough to keep me going to the finish. Tho I feel the dialogue isn't quite fitting for the time period he is placing the story, it is definitely tolerable nonetheless. Looking forward to seeing if he balances out the story
