Enjoyed the Story
Revisado: 11-19-24
I enjoyed this story. I read it out of order and it definitely made me want to read the others in the series. I wasn't thrilled with virtual voice. It was so mechanical. I tried speeding it up and was able to listen to it. However it would have been so much better with real narration.

I enjoyed both of the stories in this book. I love this series, as well as the other series by this author, but this was my first time listening to the book. I thought the narrator, Angel Clark, was perfect . I listened to this on St Patrick's Day while cooking and then through dinner. My partner, who prefers a different genre, told me he enjoyed the book, too.

Historia
When high school senior Charlotte agrees to babysit the Wilbanks twins, she plans to put the six-year-olds to bed early and spend a quiet night studying: the SATs are tomorrow, and checking the Native American/Alaskan Native box on all the forms doesn’t mean jack if you choke on test day. But tomorrow is also Halloween, and the twins are eager to show off their costumes—Ron is a nurse, in an old-fashioned white skirt-uniform, and Desi has an Authentic Squaw costume, complete with buckskin and feathered headdress. Excitement is in the air.

Revisado: 10-10-22
When I started this book I wasn't certain about it but also couldn't stop listening. For me, it was a little grossly creepy. I'm not a fan of spiders or spider eggs so parts had me dying. By the end of the story, I was happy I kept listening to it.

Based on 30 years of research, An American Marriage describes and analyzes why Lincoln had good reason to regret his marriage to Mary Todd. We enjoyed listening to this selection. Stephen R. Thorne did a good job with the narration. We thought the author did a good job with presenting the facts and being fair. It has given us a lot to discuss. At the end, I felt badly for both of them. I do believe people who are hurting often hurt others.

So her editor hands her a challenge: She can cover any topic she wants, but only if she first scores the paper an interview with Finn Dalton, the notoriously reclusive author. Living in the remote Alaskan wilderness, Finn has written a mega best-selling memoir about surviving in the wild. But he stubbornly declines to speak to anyone in the press, and no one even knows exactly where he lives. Digging deep into Finn's past, Carrie develops a theory on his whereabouts.

Feel Good Christmas Listening
Revisado: 07-24-21
I enjoyed the narrator, Rebecca Lowman. She was easy to understand.
I love this Christmas story! Carrie is a reporter in Chicago, hoping to get a story that will lead to a position covering serious stories. Finn is a successful but reclusive author living in remote Alaska. Maybe I became so quickly attached to the story because I lived in Chicago and then went to remote Alaska where I now live with my Alaskan guy. I chuckled at a few things that I felt were true of Alaska, including some sayings I have heard, and used, often. The story moved along at a good pace. I had a good time listening to it. I adored the snowflakes hanging from the ceiling. I do that in November. It is not a steamy book.
If you are looking for a good feeling, wish this were a Hallmark movie, Christmas story this is one you should get. It doesn’t take long to read. I finished this in one day. Grab it for some warm Christmas reading.

Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer's block sets in.

Enjoyed It
Revisado: 06-04-21
There are three narrators, Alana Kerr Collins, Alan Smyth, Gary Furlong. We thought they did a good job.
Allison, a college student, was friends with a girl who was murdered. Her boyfriend was convicted as the serial killer who committed the crime. Will has been in prison for ten years when new murders are committed in the same manner. Is it a copycat or was Will innocent? Allison has moved out of Ireland but returns to help by speaking to Will.
The story goes back and forth between the college years and present day. We had no trouble with the two timeframes. The story is slow paced but was so compelling we listened to it throughout the day and stayed up into the night. I was a bit disappointed in the ending but my partner really liked the ending. We would place this book as drama, mystery and thriller. We would both recommend it.

Interesting and Entertaining
Revisado: 05-24-21
I loved listening to Dolly tell the stories of her songs. She is an amazing songwriter. She is able to take anything and put it in a song complete with appropriate emotions, (much like her singing). Her songs are the stories of real life and also of fiction. I love that she is as excited by others singing her songs as she is singing them herself. In her songs she pays homage to her roots and family. She has managed to stay grounded in a profession that frequently has its successful artist soaring in their own egos. I loved hearing about Dolly’s Imagination Library and why she started it. There are clips of her some of her songs that are spoken of in this book. I think whether or not you are a fan of Dolly, or country music, you will enjoy this selection.

It all begins on an ordinary fall morning, when Kelly Medina gets a call from her son’s pediatrician to confirm her upcoming "well-baby" appointment. It’s a cruel mistake; her son left for college a year ago, and Kelly’s never felt so alone. The receptionist quickly apologizes: There’s another mother in town named Kelly Medina, and she must have gotten their numbers switched. For days, Kelly can’t stop thinking about the woman who shares her name. Lives in her same town. Has a son she can still hold, and her whole life ahead of her. She can’t help looking for her.

I Enjoyed It
Revisado: 02-16-21
I spent the day listening to this. For the most part, I liked the narrator. I’m usually not happy with female narrators doing male voices and that was the case here. I think it’s because I imagine the characters and they never get close to the voice I imagine. It happens with male narrators who do female voices, too. Therefore I recommend you listen to the sample and decide if you like the narrator.
Now the story. What a tangled tale indeed! It was broken up into three parts. The first part was long and I kept questioning whether or not main character, Kelly #1, was imagining things and if she was trying to steal a strangers baby. Then came part two and things really rocketed. I thought I had it figured out but boom! Part three exploded. I’m not really one of those readers who tries to see where the story is heading. I like to be surprised by plot twist and turns. I didn’t see things coming because I wasn’t looking for them. If you are a reader who enjoys figuring it out on your own, you may see the way it unfolds ahead of time. I hope you still enjoy it. I wouldn’t say the characters are all likable. It’s kind of complicated but by the end I did like Kelly #1. I would say only trust the baby. Haha.
I enjoyed listening to it. I was on bed rest because of pain and this was a good diversion. The day flew by.

Historia
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Great Listen!
Revisado: 10-24-20
I have been fascinated by Jack the Ripper since I first heard of him many years ago. Who was he? Why did he feel he could commit such horrible crimes? How did he get away with it? What is it that draws so many to his crimes? This book answers none of those really. For that I’m actually happy. In the midst of all my questions about him, I wanted to know more about these women. The prostitutes. As if that is all that mattered. As if it excused what was done to them. As if any of us are just one definable thing. Even as a young teen, I knew there was more to these women. The fact that for so many years that was all they were, murdered prostitutes, heavily influenced my belief that we should be remembering victims rather than the murderers. In my opinion, the author did just that. I am in awe of her research.
Each woman had a life beyond what they were, for centuries, remembered for. They had childhoods. They had family and friends. Life experiences that played a big part in what they became famous for. Life has never been gentle for women. It has made me laugh whenever I would hear woman called, “the weaker sex.” We bear children. We have overcome difficulties that are exhausting just to read of. We have been held back, valued less, yet trusted with the future, (historically who has had the responsibility of child raising and what is the future without children who grow into adults?). But we were the weaker ones. Okay. As I listened, and read, this book, of what a woman’s life was like back then, I admired these “fallen women,” who kept moving forward no matter what they had to do to survive the day.
I listened to this book on Audible. It was narrated by Louise Brealey, who did an awesome job. I also read the Kindle book. There were some slight changes in wording that made it difficult to read along as you listen. It was easy, though, to switch between listening and reading. I would recommend the book in either form. It was as fascinating as it was informative. True crime stories can be difficult to listen to. They can also be boring. This book was neither of those. I encourage you to read it and discuss it. It is an excellent book club choice.
