Excellent novel in the Rivers hospital series; grating narration

The entire Rivers community hospital series is engaging and this novel is no exception. Strong and intriguing characters, well woven subplots, and roles by supporting characters. The otherwise good narration however is grating because of the shrill falsetto voice used for MC Carrie Longmire. Hard to believe that Tantor Audio let that incongruous, childlike voicing of Carrie be released.

A fresh take on the previously explored notion of a woman elected American president, this one a bisexual widow who falls in love while in office. Strong, non-cliched characters, dealing with compelling issues, excellently crafted plot and dialog. Outstanding performance by Abby Craden.

A Rare Disappointing Novel by Donna Leon

Revisado: 08-12-23

A slowly developed, convoluted plot drowned in bureaucracy procedures and cluttered with financial minutiae. The usually brilliant Donna Leon gets mired in multiple story lines with boring supporting characters that not even the iconic Commissario Guido Brunetti, Signorina Electra, and Professora Paola Brunetti can save. Really disappointing.

Ann McMan paints vivid pictures with her words and her characters are intriguing, their dialog memorable and often witty. Galileo may be her finest novel to date. It wraps a tender, mature love story around the exposure of a hideous scandal of child sexual abuse hidden by the Catholic Church for decades. Some of the details are extremely painful to read, but none gratuitous. The clever plot turns, strong supporting characters, and ultimately justice for many villains keep the reader riveted. A great novel artfully narrated. Worth ten stars.

Radclyffe doesn’t disappoint in this slightly lower key Rivers hospital romance. Fine narration and great characters

Two bright young women from very different backgrounds are thrown together in their senior year in high school. One has experienced the harsh and self-doubt provoking worst aspects of the foster care system since she was abandoned at birth. The other comes from an affluent home with caring and engaged parents who also privately suffered a loss that is every parents’ nightmare. Kristen Zimmer’s strong characters, psychological insights, and intriguing plot twists make for a memorable novel in which love and appreciation of life prevail. And although Abby Craden is my favorite narrator, Lynn Norris lends her first-rate performance to this audio book.

Just get out your Kleenex, a glass of good red wine, and enjoy. I finished this delightful novel with tears in my eyes and a faint smile wondering, how did Kris Bryant do that? The remarkable main characters, two vibrant but very different 30-something lesbians and their amazing great-grandmothers, conjure two similar, yet tragically different, love stories shaped by the eras in which they lived and loved.

Glennon Doyle vividly describes people and conflicts, but her unflinching honesty makes this an important look at post-2000 feminism. She vividly recounts the painful struggles so many women feel while trying to live up to “norms” for the roles of spouse, mother, and worker mostly defined by the patriarchy. Recognizing and describing her vulnerability in negotiating today’s social minefield is Glennon Doyle’s superpower. AND she’s self-effacingly funny.

Okay, the best part is the slow-burn romance brewing between the drawling detective, Harley, and beautiful Lauren, the standoffish manager of her grandmother’s quaint resort cottages, Heron Bay (a striking resemblance to the real Pelican Bay cottages in Rockport?). Lauren appears to be in the serial killer’s crosshairs after the Heron Bay clubhouse is vandalized and a threatening message is scrawled in blood there on a mirror. You can almost smell the salt in the breeze and see the flaming bougainvillea at the small resort. Flirty Hawaiian-shirt clad Det. Harley arrives to investigate the vandalism, unaware that her resemblance to Lauren’s nasty ex is what’s fueling Lauren’s antipathy towards her. Add one headless corpse floating off Heron Bay’s private fishing pier, numerous shrimp dinners during the investigation, a terrifying break-in of Lauren’s cottage in the middle of the night, another hideous rape/murder nearby, Harley’s RV home being torched, then Lauren finally jumping into Harley’s arms and you get yet another excellent Gerri Hill novel with equally great narration by Abby Crayden. I was very sorry when this intriguing tale ended. Gerri Hill’s books just keep getting better and better.
