Historia
An expedition in South America uncovers a terrifying race of men without bones who literally suck the life out of their prey. A man in 20th-century London makes a horrifying discovery about a monster found off the coast of Brighton in 1745. A sea captain goes ashore on a deserted island and finds what seem to be the bones of a previously unknown species of monster, only to learn that the bones tell a much more tragic tale than he could ever have imagined.

Valancourt Books is doing good things by bringing works like this out of obscurity. After going down the Paperbacks From Hell rabbit hole, I came across this and took a chance for a credit. I was not disappointed in the slightest.
I hope more books and stories from Gerald Kersh are in the works.

Get the ending right!
You’d think that would be in writing 101, but we all know of so many bad endings to great franchises. Shows like Game of Thrones, True Bloods, and The Soprano’s are prime examples.
We’re in the era of peak television. Don’t add your work to the former disappointments.
Instead, learn from mistakes, and listen to James Scott Bell’s guidance.

Satisfy your craving for extraordinary authors and exceptional fiction: Meet the women writers who defied convention to craft some of literature’s strangest tales, from Frankenstein to The Haunting of Hill House and beyond. Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldn’t exist without the women who created it. From Gothic ghost stories to psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are as intriguing as their fiction.

Worth your credit! Don’t hesitate, horror fans!
Revisado: 10-23-24
I am a fan of the series, and hearing all the stories behind the scenes was worth the price of admission. The franchise has had a lot of ups and downs, and hearing about it is like a nostalgic road trip.
Any fans of horror, and any fans of how movies are made should enjoy Taking Shape.
Wish we could have had a little more. The book ends with Halloween 2018, which was when this was released, so it leaves on a high note. Perhaps a second edition will come along in the future.

Edward Bloom, an aging salesman, is dying. As his grown son, William, cares for him, the young man tries to focus on what he knows about his father’s life. Story after story surfaces in William’s memory, and he shares mythic visions of a fantastic father who was loved by all - a man who was the best runner, fisherman, businessman, and adventurer in the world. Big Fish tells these tall tales of Edward Bloom’s life. Punctuated with his vast repertory of jokes, they set the stage for Edward’s final, wonderful transformation.

Historia
What begins as a blissful vacation aboard a cruise ship swiftly descends into a harrowing ordeal when the author's husband is unexpectedly ensnared in the world of enforced sobriety. This poignant memoir opens the door to a seldom-seen system, revealing the realities of a mandatory rehabilitation system that operates under the guise of care. As the narrative unfolds, the listener is taken on a deeply personal journey that exposes the underbelly of a rehab industry fraught with systemic flaws and bureaucratic apathy.

When a flawed system works too well…
Revisado: 05-03-24
Kate Seger’s story of her husband getting screwed over by a technicality (barely hungover at the time of a random drug test) is heartbreaking. At the same time her scrutiny of good intentions is worth hearing.
Sobriety normally has good connotations, but when a system of sobering up, which is designed for the worst offenders, it can overcompensate its “good intentions” with a lot of overreach, and even overkill.
I was fuming at some of lack of empathy and humanity on the part of the case worker.
Systems are flawed with the human factor, and can only adapt or change from stories like this. I hope plenty of good can come from this story.

Revisado: 03-10-24
Moral ambiguity always makes for a good read. Moral ambiguity with a sense of humor is even better!
Apple Rose is a cheerleader that has an odd hobby. That hobby involves the slightest case being a serial killer.
At my office job, I pushed play in the morning, and didn't pause once! The narrator did a phenomenal job getting into the characters, and there were moments that I was genuinely trying not to laugh at my desk, and others where I was still in all the right shocking moments.
Mr. Stanfield has two books (so far) in the series, and I can't wait for the next audiobook! Apple Rose rocks!

Type Hard. Type Fast. Make Dough. That was the formula of old-school pulp fiction—plot-driven, popular and gobbled up by a reading public hungry for more. And it produced many writers who hammered out a living selling “cash-and-carry” stories and novels. Some of these writers were among the best America has ever produced. Writers like Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and John D. MacDonald. Others are numbered among the bestselling authors of all time, including Erle Stanley Gardner, Lester Dent, and Frederick Faust (better known by his pen name, Max Brand). What were the secrets of ...

Revisado: 12-12-23
To prevent this in the future, please include a table of contents to avoid getting collections with stories I’ve listened to before. It feels like a deceptive waste of a credit, when I already have the repeated stories elsewhere.
Also, shell out some money for better narrators. Two of the readers are hardly intelligible.
This is constructive, only because I want more from your authors.
