Historia
Phoebe, the soulless child, has been raised by her adoptive father, Eric—the universe-hopping vampire wizard from the future. After all, who better to raise a soulless infant than an undead monster? He did his best to raise her right. He made certain she was well-educated. He picked a reasonably decent culture for her to grow up in. He trained her in her powers, taught her everything he could, and even broadened her horizons by touring other worlds, other times, other histories—and some futures!

This is different but good
Revisado: 09-13-23
I don't know who is in charge of hiring narrators, but they hit the ball out of the park AGAIN! Mrs. Buhr is fantastic. This story on the other hand is complicated. This is basically the improbable story of an extremely powerful, sheltered young lady. We have spent 100s of hours getting to know her father who seemingly out of character has turned loose his teenage daughter to wander the worlds alone at her own discretion. during this story she changes from a naive spoiled child into a more world wise young lady. This is not always a pleasant tale to listen though, in fact if it was not for the great work of Mrs. Buhr I doubt I would have made it to the end. I don't think this is a knock on Garon Whited as much as it is a knock on me the listener. It was well written, I just find her personality annoying. improbable is a word I personally dont want to think about as a story unfolds, and this story is either full of examples, or....Phoebe is remarkably shallow and temperamental. ***Spoiler*** As an example, John Wick a professional Assassin gets all murdery when some one kills his dog...ok dude is a murder, Phoebe goes from we can't kill murders to torturing her nemeses to kill him slowly before she ends him for killing her dog. This is after she kills dozens of people under mind control, the same mind control she is healing her ex-boyfriend from.
I suppose this is ok if this is the growth of her character and she is just growing into her fathers footsteps as she understands evil is best to just be put down, but I could not take the bouncing from idealistic know it all to murderer again in the next book.

This book and performance are perfect.
Shortly after finding the YouTube channel
Millennial falcon episode with John Kreteschmer, i put his books on my “get one day list.” After a quick search and seeing the AMAZING Sean Runnette narrated this book I snatched it up. John is in fact a world class story teller, everyone from a seasoned sailor to novice with only dreams can enjoyed this book. Yes you will learn from this, but more importantly for a brief 10 hours you will get to share in John’s adventures. I can’t wait to get more of his books. I really do hope Sean Runnette narrated those as well. (PS for Runnette fans i almost lost it when Fire Brand showed up as the voice of the Plummer who bought the old steel boat)
Thank you to both John and Sean for this excellent performance.

Ok....it's not fair to compare a world class actress to your average narrator. On top of that, something absolutely special happens when you get someone with so much passion for a character.
Alex Kingston is an absolute treasure.

In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

Best Story Teller Of All Time

Simply the Best
Revisado: 01-02-21
It's poetic when a story teller that summarizes historical great story tellers, starts to be continually referred to as the best story teller of all time.
Dan Carlin, is likely the best story teller of our age. He is that good. It would be amazing to get his entire collection on Audible, many of us would burn credits on his podcasts.

Historia
Eric - or King Halar, or Vlad, or any number of aliases - doesn't want to be bothered. It's hard to pin down what he does want, if anything. He lives a quiet life, almost a solitary one, mourning in his own way for the loss of someone dear. His quiet solitude can't go on forever. Despite the empty places inside him, events and creatures move through the worlds and across the void between, forcing him into action, into fighting, into confronting things perhaps better left alone...even forcing him into being a King.

Sean Runnette is ......amazing......
Some writers do character development ....Garon Whited builds personalities on an entirely different level.
I am not entirely sure how many narrators can deliver Whited’s level of internal monologs, I just know that it’s poetry when it’s Sean Runnette’s voice delivering it.
If you have not listen to any book in this series, you should.... seriously. No annoying, distracting characters, no silly made up voices. Smart and sharp with a sprinkle of philosophy.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

World Building Depth you expect from a 40hr book
Revisado: 09-09-17
Where does Nightlord rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Somewhere in the upper 10%
What did you like best about this story?
This is a new vein in story telling. Yes it has magic, yes it has knights, yes it has vampires. No you have never read this story before. This is a new take on fantasy and Garon Whited has an amazing imagination.
Have you listened to any of Sean Runnette’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not heard Sean Runnette's work before. He does not have the range of other narrators. He is not going to bring a dozen new distinct voices to a story. He also never sounds silly nor unbelievable. You know how some narrators seem to almost change a story with inflection? Sean does not do that either. He does add to the story with amazing delivery. He is on the very short list of people I would want to listen to for 120 hours. I am positive i will follow this narrator to other works. He is that good. I don't want to imply that Sean made a bad story good, because i really like Garon Whited's work, but Sean Runnette COULD make a bad story good. Sean is that good.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
How can we answer this with out spoilers? How do you write a 40 hour long book and have thousands of people refer to it as a 5 star book? You make sure that its constantly rewarding. The author does a great job putting many little stories into one big story. There are many challenges faced and many rewarding solutions.
Any additional comments?
Do you like fantasy? Do you like world building stories? Do you want something different? Then buy this. I don't personally -love- fantasy i have many books i did not listen to past the first hour or so. I cant stand fantasy that is beat into a cookie cutter shape, that comes out so flat you could skip to the last chapter because you know the ending already. That is what i really enjoyed about this series. We have never heard this story before.

The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

This is the best book so far.......but......

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely
What did you like best about this story?
Pacing... this book keeps the story moving. There is still the rich world building narriative... but the story does not linger like it has in past books.
Which character – as performed by Jefferson Mays – was your favorite?
Mr. Mays is simply amazing. They are all done well. IF i was forced to pick on in this book it is Amos.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Our past does not define us...
Any additional comments?
This is a tough review to write... This is my favorite book so far, but it was missing my favorite science fiction character ever. No...not Han Solo, no... Not James Kirk...No... Micheal Garibaldi....no...not even Shepard Book..... The truest bad ass of all the bad asses. The most dangerous character ever. Chrisjen Avasarala. Any fan of hers know you can't tell this story with her in it....its like trying to tell a story of a bank robbery with Superman already in the bank....the story just doesn't work...it ends on page one. No spoilers...but this story as great as it was., cant take place with Chrisjen in place to bitch slap people around as she is playing 4d chess against the whims of oversize toddlers stumbling around things they do not understand. I eagerly await listening to book 4 and getting the band back together.

An 11 hour visit with an old friend
Revisado: 04-23-16
What did you like best about Staked? What did you like least?
Luke Daniels, simply amazing. I really liked how brave Kevin Hearne is to tell the story he wants to tell. I don't want to get in to details, but good story. The point of view characters really get in to deeper philosophy concepts. While the whole book is done well, these parts of the book are really written and performed well. Due to humor, Kevin Hearne has always been quotable, but the serious parts of this book takes it to another level. In many ways, the Iron Druid story has grown up.
Would you be willing to try another book from Kevin Hearne? Why or why not?
Absolutely
What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?
He is flawless in his performance, his character voices are very well done. You have to remind yourself this is one man voicing an entire book. I am not sure where the credit is do, writer, producer or Luke Daniels, but the use of inflection, dramatic pauses, and narration really bring this story to life. I cant imagine this book with out Luke Daniels. As awesome as the source material is, I cant imagine any other voice to this story.
Was Staked worth the listening time?
Yes, I absolutely believe so. While i really don't want to be critical, i have to say at this point I am just outright skipping Granule and her story line. It started in the last book, and by mid book i just clicked next chapter when Luke's voice changed to Granule.
Any additional comments?
Owen is amazing!

Revisado: 04-16-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, This book was performed flawlessly. This is a fantastic story, combined with 1st class narration, how did 40 hours go by so fast!!!
What did you like best about this story?
The story is broad and complex, it transitions from plot point to plot point with ease. A tale this long often will find itself stuck in the mud attempting to over describe trivial points. Chris's writing style is quick and to the point, he has a fantastic sense of humor and knows how to entertain his audience.
Which scene was your favorite?
There are so many memorable character interactions in this book, but my favorite is the fate of Trevor in book 1. ( sorry no spoilers!!)
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Wanted... Yes!!
Any additional comments?
This book and series is an amazing value. Chris has built out an amazing world, full of diverse characters. His unique take on the mythology is fresh and new. The narrator had an amazing script to work with, and he took this to the next level. This is EASILY one of the best performances on Amazon.
