Interesting life
Revisado: 12-27-24
I liked her stories and narration. Mostly about the development of her career and why she made the business decisions she did. The tone is genuine and a little reserved, which is fine with me. There weren't a lot of personal details but I wouldn't want to share my more painful private experiences with the world either. Overall, a good read.

Another fantastic tale! Great characters and a fun plot twist

I think the narrators voice really makes this excellent. The story is very good, but his telling of it, and all the others , is perfect.

Brutal, detailed description of torturing animals
Revisado: 02-24-24
I liked the narrator a lot. And the characters seemed like they were going to be interesting. The story seemed good. But I don't think I can pick this up again. A few chapters in, there is an unnecessarily detailed and profoundly disturbing description of an animal that has been tortured. I just can't do it. Didn't anybody tell this author about the secret to retaining readers? Never torture the pets! I'm sure this was done to convey how terrible the serial killer is. There are so many other ways to do that that don't involve this particular device.
This book should have a trigger warning. Or a rewrite.

Historia
One year after the death of his beloved musician father, thirteen-year-old Benny Oh begins to hear voices. The voices belong to the things in his house—a sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, a piece of wilted lettuce. Although Benny doesn't understand what these things are saying, he can sense their emotional tone; some are pleasant, a gentle hum or coo, but others are snide, angry and full of pain. When his mother, Annabelle, develops a hoarding problem, the voices grow more clamorous.

Masterful writing
Revisado: 09-25-21
I can't express how much I like this book. It's broad and deep, the characters are well drawn, and the plot is enticing.
Annabelle's voice didn't work for me at first, as it didn't seem to match her character. After getting more into the story, it does make sense. This is a small thing and shouldn't stop anyone from exploring this book.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Revisado: 05-05-21
I thought the narrator was perfect for this book. The story was interesting intricate and I cared about the characters. I don’t think that this concept is tired or recycled. I think it is some thing a lot of people think about and so that’s why it may seem familiar to some people.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Dr. Tara Westover’s memoir is a story of the triumph of the human spirit over self doubt, madness, intimidation, and violence. I love the image of her standing on the roof at Cambridge. I hope she always stands straight up to the wind. So glad to have read this!

Insightful, interesting, on target
Revisado: 05-12-17
Where does Playing Big rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This ranks first among the audiobooks I've listened to, or read, in the genre.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I appreciated the use of real-life examples that illustrated the points the author made.
What about Tara Mohr’s performance did you like?
Her delivery is genuine and unpretentious. She is talking TO us, not AT us. The quality of her voice is well-modulated and pleasant, as I knew it would be since I listened to the sample before buying (if the narration's voice isn't pleasant, I can't stand it, no matter how great the message. Happily, I like Tara's voice).
What insight do you think you’ll apply from Playing Big?
New responses to praise, criticism, and callings. The discussion of the two different kinds of fear is amazing and reframes what had been roadblocks. The concept of the "leap" is brilliant. This book is going to make a significant difference to me. I've already given it to several friends!

Agatha!
Revisado: 03-09-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Pushing Up Daisies to be better than the print version?
I don't know! I only "read" audio versions of Agatha Raisin books.
What other book might you compare Pushing Up Daisies to and why?
Every other Agatha Raisin book; maybe the Miss Fisher Mysteries, because of a strong, believable woman protagonist.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
She could have been Penelope Keith instead of herself.
Any additional comments?
Please bring back Penelope Keith - no one else sounds right.

Historia
When a teenage boy dies suspiciously on Halloween night, Salem's chief of police, John Rafferty, now married to gifted lace reader Towner Whitney, wonders if there is a connection between his death and Salem's most notorious cold case, a triple homicide dubbed The Goddess Murders, in which three young women, all descended from accused Salem witches, were slashed on Halloween night in 1989. He finds unexpected help in Callie Cahill, the daughter of one of the victims newly returned to town.

Good writing, bad reading
Revisado: 03-09-17
Where does The Fifth Petal rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The Fifth Petal ranks in the top 5 for the high quality writing, but the narrator's poor delivery was so distracting it diminished the overall quality of the audiobook.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was intricate, sometimes lagging with the depth of detail thrown in.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her voice ranged from plodding (e.g., emphasis on the word "said" that broke up the pacing), to hysterical or frenetic, e.g. "Rafferty [voice rises in hysterical tone] PUT THE COFEE CUP [voice shakes] on the TABLE [emphasis on this word as if "table" is something evil or threatening] with a CLICK [voice cracks]." That's just an example of the reading style, not a real quote from the book. She seemed not to understand the pacing of this kind of story, and her style was distracting at best, outright annoying at worst.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Moved me? not really. But it was a good story.
Any additional comments?
Please use the narrator for previous Barry books, Alyssa Bresnahan.
