Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Meryl made this book unforgettable
Revisado: 04-25-25
I don’t even know where to begin. It feels like a book about everything and nothing, all at once. I cannot imagine hearing or reading it in any other way except through Meryl Streep’s voice. She absolutely made this story. It was so beautifully and perfectly performed. I wish it didn’t have to end. A magnificent story.

Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

I wish this book didn’t have to end
Revisado: 04-16-25
I loved every word from the first to the last. Incredible storytelling. It never felt grandiose or exploitative. It gave me a greater appreciation for people who do these jobs as a service to the rest of society. I was appreciative of the addition of the sharing of Barbara’s personal struggles and demons and in awe of how she overcame them. A real-life Kay Scarpetta and incredible woman.

Revisado: 04-11-25
I didn’t know what to expect going into this, and it took my breath away. Poignant, beautiful, impactful. This is one I’ll be thinking about for a long time. The audiobook was especially beautiful. I wish Violeta could have lived another 100 years so the story didn’t have to end.

Historia
The rules of law and society have never taken hold in the Sierra Madre, which is home to bandits, drug smugglers, cave-dwelling Tarahumara Indians, opium farmers, and other assorted outcasts. Outsiders are not welcome; drugs are the primary source of income; murder is all but a regional pastime. Fifteen years ago, journalist Richard Grant developed what he calls "an unfortunate fascination" with this lawless place. Locals warned that he would meet his death there, but he didn't believe them - until his last trip.

I hadn’t intended to start book 3 so soon after finishing 2 but I’m so glad I did. I loved how the story evolved and brought in so many elements from the first two. It feels like there’s more than enough set up for future books and I certainly hope that’s the case!!

Amazing weaving of stories and characters
Revisado: 03-16-25
I honestly didn’t know how Follett was going to weave so many different stories and characters together in the midst of major historical events, but he did it!! And beautifully. I was sucked into every family unit’s story, and cannot wait for books two and three. What a fascinating way to capture a period of time that spans generations.

She's a poor farmer's daughter with nowhere to go and nothing in her pockets. But the other woman with the same name has vanished, and pretending to be her just might get Clara some money to send back home.

I ended the book really hoping it had been a true story. But it was such an interesting look at class and immigrant dynamics during that time period. Especially with how people view the same issues today.
