Western Black Beauty

I first read the story when I was about 13. I'm 36 now. It strikes me as a western Black Beauty story, following the life and hardships of a horse through the years. Like Black Beauty, the horses do not have dialogue.

The author paints a beautiful picture and it's easy to get lost in the story. Overall it is well written and it feels very "cowboy", like he understands the culture and vernacular.

This book was written in the 1920's - and it very clearly dates itself, as the book is sexist and racist. The only woman in the book is ignorant, has no dialogue, and doesn't know how to properly care for horses and makes a terrible mistake. The main "bad guy" is a Native American man, refered to as "The Half Breed," who causes Smokey to hate any humans with darker skin tones. Most of the other men in this book are rough and have something to prove and lack any basic empathy. Even Clint, the "good guy", is not someone I would ever entrust my own horse to. The way the horses are treated in this book is very sad. Maybe that was just the culture then. The unfortunate thing about it is, if kids read it and think that it's normal to treat horses like this.

The narrator makes this sound and feel like a children's story, whereas before listening to it, reading it felt like a timeless classic. The narrator's voice is harsh to listen to, overly enthusiastic, and has the tone of telling a comedic ghost story around a campfire to a bunch of 9-year-old boy scouts. The narrator also consistently mispronounces several words and clearly doesn't understand horse terms or equipment.

Great story, well written, page turner, can't wait to hear what happens next. Starts kind of slow and my only complaint is that the narrator's voice is so soothing I would often start to fall asleep. But when the story picks up I never lost my focus and the narrator was great. They used two different narrators for Simon and Joe. Really good, thought provoking story. Looking forward to seeing the film next.

What I liked about it:
- Easy to read, a page turner
- My first Vietnam book and painted a good picture of what war and returning from war was like
- I'm a nurse and feel the medical aspects were not too bad
- Good descriptions, the writing engages the senses
- Frankie has some damn good girl friends, it made me want to call them up
- I like how the narrator was consistent with her voices, and I especially liked Barb's voice
- The healing at the end feels rushed... but I do like the part when Frankie says she doesn't believe in love anymorebut then learns about what love really is

What I didn't like:
- Not so subtle foreshadowing for some characters
- Narrator makes all the men sound sad and gravely. Yes they all had a slight difference in their voices or accents but overall they all sound like that
- Huge holes in the plot, I will write them in the last paragraph with a spoiler warning
- Frankie comes from wealth and is entitled, and her perspective isn't entirely relatable to veterans because many of them ended up homeless with zero support
- The author tried to show how it was hard for Frankie to integrate and assimilate back into the community but it still feels like there is so much lacking, it's extreme in a soap opera way, no subtlies
- Frankie has great girlfriends but we never get into the depths of their characters, and we don't really get to either of them. I'm not sure why they were such good friends. Frankie was kinda annoying and didn't give back or reciprocate.

Holes in plot (spoilers)
- Why didn't the helicopter report if Jamie lived or died? He was their lead physician. Couldn't Frankie or others have even asked what had happened to him?
- Henry is a psychiatrist, why didn't he help Frankie while they were dating? he obviously knew she was struggling.
- There's no character arch with her Dad. At the very end he suddenly sees her as a hero? From where?

I think the only reason I understood what was going on was because I saw the movie. The book focuses more on the narrators fragmented reality rather than the story line. knowing the movie helped me piece things together. The author doesn't spell things out.

I love how both the book and movie challenge the status quo of reality and American culture. It challenges us to question why we do what we do. it also highlights the danger of groupthink and how ideas and beliefs get out of control.
It's spiritual in the sense that the old you has to die in order to really appreciate your life. "First, you have to know, not fear, know that someday you're going to die."

Here are some more quotes I love:

"The things you own end up owning you."

"When people think you're dying, they really listen to you, instead of just waiting for their turn to speak."

"You are not your job. You are not how much money you have in the bank. You are not the car you drive. You are not the contents of your wallet."

"Stop trying to control everything, and just let go. Let go!"

"This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time."

The stories are interesting and really pull on the heartstrings. I work in procedural nursing and reading this book makes me SO grateful I don't work on the floor, whew.

I appreciate the humanness of these stories however there is not much in the ways of clinical nursing. it's more about the human experience, which is great, but doesn't feel like the full picture.

The narrator keeps this perpetual tone of angst, worry, grief, intensity... it's a bit too much. I have to take breaks because it gets old.

I'm rereading (listening to) this book from high school. I love the descriptions and how the author writes in an unbiased way that lets the reader respond for themselves. The book is well written, and she does a good job in giving each character her own "voice".
The last half of the book feels almost like a summary of the latter years of the character's lives, but the first half of the book feels like you're right there in the Congo with them.
I especially appreciated the irony of the father missionary preaching how to be saved, like being a Christian automatically makes you a good person and eligible to go to heaven, when the Congolese people already lived a life mirroring Jesus' teachings, without knowing anything about the bible: love thy neighbor, honor thy parents (elders), tell the truth, treat others how you want to be treated, help each other and be kind... no one here needed to be "saved". There was nothing "savage" about them.
The book encouraged me to research some history on my own and Google images of the Congo jungle and culture, and it was beautiful and heartbreaking. The author does them justice.
Since the end of the book did not grip me as much, I'm giving it one less star, and I'm also giving it one less star because of the narrator. She sounds like a much older woman and she doesn't change her voice to switch between the characters. Each character narrates a different chapter and when I would pause the book and return to it throughout the week, I had a hard time remembering where I was and who was speaking. She also mispronounced some words.
Overall a good read and I'm glad I purchased it.

This book is so well written, reading it made me feel like I was going insane or in another reality. It was great to hear it read by the author. She seamlessly blended her story with research and factual information such as pathology and anatomy. The book griped me from the beginning. It slows down a bit in the end chapters. Very educational and no doubt will help many people.

Boring story, poor narrative choice

The story goes nowhere, it's flat, and it's unbelievable. The main character is given a baby girl and decides to take care of her in such an offhanded way with probably even less thought, attachment, or energy put into it than taking in a stray animal.

I got a couple hours in to where the main character has only made it as far as landing a job, finding a self-depreciating roommate who complains that she's fat, and dropping her adoptive daughter off at a mall daycare center to work said job. Yawn. I returned the book. The whole story leading up to that part is lukewarm.

The main character is supposed to be a girl in her early twenties and the narrator sounds like she's in her sixties, it doesn't fit.

I didn't want this book to end! I got the audiobook format. I enjoyed the story and the author did a great job reading it.
I loved hearing her perspectives. Liara shares candidly without pushing the reader to change or need to agree with her, her tone feels very fluid and non-judgemental, and she really owns her story, both the celebration and the darkness.
Liara's views resonate with me and put words to things I've felt but couldn't articulate. She makes edgy topics ok to talk about and normalizes the human experience while at the same time makes it fascinating. She is addressing sex work but there layers of life and the human condition within hunan sexuality, and it's interesting to read about how she navigated different situations. I love how she can detail experiences she's had without identifying with them or internalizing any shame. And some of what she shares is really sexy.
I feel hopeful and empowered after reading this book. I'm buying a hardcopy after this! I may also have a crush.

pros: good writing, history interwoven, educational, good medical terminology and explanations, good descriptions

cons: long (could've been 1/3 the length and better for it), none of the characters particularly likable, storyline felting grasping and unconvincing, very spiritual at the end to "wrap things up", overall lackluster
