Will James
Smoky the Cowhorse is one of the most famous and beloved horse stories told. Will James writes in 1920s cowboy vernacular and tells the life of the horse Smoky in the Western United States from his birth to eventual return to his home range. Smoky is born in the wild, captured, and trained by Clint and becomes known as the best cow horse. Then a horse thief steals Smoky and beats him repeatedly. Smoky eventually attacks and escapes from the abusive thief. When Smoky is eventually captured, his new violent demeanor results in him being used as a bucking bronco in rodeos as “The Cougar”. Years of bucking take their toll. “The Cougar” becomes “Cloudy” the riding horse, and eventually he is sold to an abusive man who starves him. It would be the end, but Clint happens to find him. With careful treatment, Smoky recovers while back on his home range.
Smoky the Cowhorse won the 1927 Newbery Award and was adapted to the screen three times as Smoky.

Good reader, bad dialect.

Consequently his books like Smoky the Cowhorse are good books!
But the reader they chose to read this book was a terrible choice. Enthusiastic and good at reading he may be he knows nothing of horses or cattle or cowboys, given that he couldn't even pronounce most of the vernacular correctly.
even though I've read
this book before and loved it I couldn't finish listening.

The author paints a beautiful picture and it's easy to get lost in the story. Overall it is well written and it feels very "cowboy", like he understands the culture and vernacular.
This book was written in the 1920's - and it very clearly dates itself, as the book is sexist and racist. The only woman in the book is ignorant, has no dialogue, and doesn't know how to properly care for horses and makes a terrible mistake. The main "bad guy" is a Native American man, refered to as "The Half Breed," who causes Smokey to hate any humans with darker skin tones. Most of the other men in this book are rough and have something to prove and lack any basic empathy. Even Clint, the "good guy", is not someone I would ever entrust my own horse to. The way the horses are treated in this book is very sad. Maybe that was just the culture then. The unfortunate thing about it is, if kids read it and think that it's normal to treat horses like this.
The narrator makes this sound and feel like a children's story, whereas before listening to it, reading it felt like a timeless classic. The narrator's voice is harsh to listen to, overly enthusiastic, and has the tone of telling a comedic ghost story around a campfire to a bunch of 9-year-old boy scouts. The narrator also consistently mispronounces several words and clearly doesn't understand horse terms or equipment.
