Historia
New York Times best-selling author Patrick Lencioni has written a dozen books that focus on how leaders can build teams and lead organizations. In The Motive, he shifts his attention toward helping them understand the importance of why they're leading in the first place. Lencioni thrusts his listeners into a day-long conversation between rival CEOs. Shay Davis is the CEO of Golden Gate Alarm, who, after just a year in his role, is beginning to worry about his job and is desperate to figure out how to turn things around.

Reiterating concepts that should be understood as table stakes
Revisado: 01-07-25
I like the overall style of the book as it mirrors other earlier works. It is interesting to hear basic leadership concepts reiterated / captured in a fictional account. A great example of the old adage “the things that go without saying still sometimes need to be said “.

“Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.

I liked the departure from the usual Reacher villains and the tech aspect of the storyline. The story wanders a bit with some overly verbose descriptions of the landscape.

You might believe you’re thinking clearly in the moments that matter most. But in all likelihood, when the pressure is on, you won’t be thinking at all. And your subsequent actions will inevitably move you further from the results you ultimately seek—love, belonging, success, wealth, victory. According to Farnam Street founder Shane Parrish, we must get better at recognizing these opportunities for what they are, and deploying our cognitive ability in order to achieve the life we want.

You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me. I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs - as much as any one person can.

Though dated, still a must read. Great at pulling out items that are not new, but are just as pernicious during the yellow journalism battles of 1895-1898, their origins and implications. Won’t be reading or watching the news, blogs and social media the same after reading.

Basics - come for the show if not seen elsewhere
Revisado: 06-09-23
This book has basic advice on personal finances that you'll find with other personal finance guru's: Orman, Chatzky, Ramsey, any FIRE podcaster, etc.
He does have showmanship in this book which explains some of the popularity. Good combo if this is your first personal finance book, you're in mid 30's or younger and just getting started. Come for the show if you've not seen this elsewhere. Wins people over with "anti budget" comments and "get a latte every day if you want one", but then later talks about the envelope system which is a budgeting system.
Cons: Constantly brings up how much he hates certain advice like: "Stop going out for coffee," He's right on the point, but get off that horse already, it's dead. I was annoyed with his F bomb drops and unnecessary cursing. Very unprofessional which knocked down the performance level ratings. Felt he spent too much time bragging of successes and condescending others not following his "brilliant advice". It is great to stress how dumb or important some strategies are, but it felt like he was so overusing it to literally underscore he's smartest guy in the room and everyone else is an idiot if you don't follow his advice.
He makes plenty of apologies for things he got wrong with his first edition of this book. Wonder if will he apologize for getting wrong other things wrong in this second edition - like overpaying your taxes isn't bad when he comes out with next edition. Guess he still has yet to learn/understand opportunity costs and time value of money concepts?
Made it to the end, but barely.

Found this to be a very entertaining story. Great cheeky dialogue between the characters. Some things were stretched past believable, but I wasn’t looking for or expecting 100% technical and character realism in a sci-fi story. A good premise taken to satisfying ending.

Good Primer, but loses itself with politics
Revisado: 07-20-21
This isn't a bad book if you need a systems thinking and control systems theory introduction. If you have a foundation already, there won't be much if anything new. If its been a while, it may be a good, fast review.
The book loses itself with some of the blatant biases and attacks on how political parties (e.g. Republicans) and "big business" is "misusing the control system levers for self-benefit". Since this was published posthumously, we're spared further attacks on Republican politicians post Ronald Reagan. It is interesting that given when it was written, that as a system, political discourse has polarized beyond what was criticized. Luckily, this is limited to the last 15-20% of the book.
The narrator was fine. It is obvious in the performance that some of the underlying text was written awkwardly. With some longer, convoluted sentences, she loses her way. She inappropriately pauses in places if you're tracking the thought being conveyed. I attributed that to the underlying material rather than her performance.
