The top 10 list is populated. The sponsorship program is open. The difficulty is ramping up. The first three floors were nothing compared to what Carl and Donut now face. The Iron Tangle. An impossibly complicated subway system built out of the world's subterranean railway systems, all combined and then tied together into a knot. Up is down.

I’m cackling
Revisado: 02-04-25
I haven’t laughed this much during a book series as I have in every single one of these books. The character development is superb, each part of the dungeon and behind-the-scenes dungeon action is so creative and unique I just can’t get enough.

dark and Witcher
Revisado: 01-05-25
The stars finally aligned just right for me to be in the right frame of mind to read this book. The Witcher meets Interview With a Vampire. It took me a while to get comfortable with the way the story was being told. I didn’t really care about or like the guy doing the “interview” so their interactions were distracting to me and felt kind of forced to make that aspect of the story work. I also struggled with the first time jump because I didn’t understand the point. Once I got past that, and got my teeth into it (no pun intended lol), it was a slow, sweet burn. This author walks a thin line between purple prose and poetry and I’m not mad about it. Beautiful writing that takes its time, I often felt completely immersed in the scene but other times felt like it didn’t leave room for character depth.
I could say so much more and give a list of pros and cons but if you are trying to decide whether to read this just know that it isn’t the pretty and romantic Anne Rice vampires, but darker and more complicated Vampires with a bit of a twist and unique lore. If you read and loved The Witcher, this will scratch that itch for sure.

Sweet
Revisado: 11-19-24
Sweet story with decent narration. Similar MC character profile as Under the Whispering Door but okay. The narrator isn’t boring but puts inflections and spaces where they aren’t supposed to be, which is distracting. Also the voices chosen for some of his characters make them sound way older than they are. BUT those are just little nitpicky things - it’s an entertaining story!

Being accepted into an elite school of magic, monsters, and assassins was not my idea of higher education. But here I am, fighting my way through the Culling Trials to claim my right to be taught. As if the gauntlet-type physical and mental tests aren’t enough, people are going missing. People who are my friends. In a dangerous world where no one is as they seem, the golden rule is simple: Trust no one. They think we should just look out for ourselves. That we should leave the fallen behind and ask no questions. They clearly think we’re idiots.

Why so short
Revisado: 09-06-24
I’m supremely annoyed that a 5 hour book that amounts to a small part of a larger book is one credit. I’m even more annoyed by the fact that I spent another credit on the next “part”. But the ultimate insult was how this book just ended in the middle of something for no particular reason, not even a cliffhanger that makes sense. It’s like they took one half of a book and cut it into two parts, but left off some pages of the second part. It’s obvious they’re just doing this to eke out more cash but does it have to be so obvious? The story is no good if there is no beginning, middle, AND end.

I don’t know how I feel about what I just read
Revisado: 08-08-24
First of all, dammit Travis, for that last few sentences lmao! Second, this was a decent book, if different from the others. Not a fan of the Part Two style of storytelling- it seemed like a copout or just a lazy shortcut. Still, I’m not mad about it - except for the part where an integral part of the (spoiler) is completely glossed over. Still mad about that. I’m not sure if I didn’t like part two or if I liked it but am still processing. Heath did a fantastic job as per usual!

WHAT DID I JUST READ?
Revisado: 07-02-24
I want to tell everyone I know to read this book so I can talk about it with them but no one will think the same about it as anyone else. AMAZINGLY unique, smart, creative … confusing AF but in a good way where you are trying to figure things out, then you get it mostly worked out only to get thrown another curve. EXCELLENT narration - I’m so impressed.

lost interest
Revisado: 06-18-24
I’m not sure if it’s missing tension or if there’s too much downtime descriptions or if the characters are kind of boring (except Vex) but I lost interest and couldn’t wait for the story to end. I probably won’t read the next book - I did like the last one though. Not all stories need to be a duology or trilogy…not sure why some feel they need to be.
